I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 Server edition and I am getting stuck at the language screen... Yep the language screen that comes up as soon as you boot off the CD I have not gotten very far and I am already hitting problems... I am using a USB keyboard but it is working in the bios I don't know if this could be the problem?

At the moment I am using AntiX Mepis. I switched to Linux because my Windows used to freeze all of a sudden after a few hourse or even minutes.
Now my Linux was quite stable for a few days but again, it freezes in a few minutes when I use a Window Manager. In the terminal without using any Window Manager it never freezes.
Can anyone tell me the solution to this? code...
I am trying to turn an old HP Pavillion 6630 desktop into a home server, and due to my own relative inexperience using linux I decided on a ubuntu server. However, when I get to the partitioner it shows me an error screen: [!!] Partition disks<Go Back> <Continue>I can only choose to go back or continue, and no matter which one i press it goes to a non-responsive blue screen. A slightly worse version of the BSoD if you will. I assumed this was a hardware problem initially, however the hard drive boots fine into windows still, and it still might be a hardware issue, I would just like some other input on what the problem might be.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to set up my Linux box so that I can access its GUI applications from an older Mac laptop running OS X 10.5 on the local LAN and away from home (over the internet).I know the traditional way to do this is with an X session (& Mac OS X has an X window client included), but does this offer the best performance, especially over the internet? Would I be better to install some sort of RDP server? I've used VNC in the past, but performance has been pretty slow and ideally I'd like the remote apps to show up seamlessly (more efficient use of screen real estate).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am mainly a Windows admin, but I do *NIX administration from time to time, for now I need to use an open source solution for backup windows environment mainly, I spent last days playing with bacula and backupPC, and I then chose backupPC, I built a solution with it seems working not bad, but before i go on deeper, I thought asking geeks here better, my main experience with back was with Vertias/Symantec Backup Exec, what do you recommend as most similar backup solution in Ubuntu offer a close level (I don't backup to tapes I back to hard disks), also a gui is preferred, while backupPC do a nice work and i handled its client config file (machine_name.pl), but I still do mistakes sometimes and troubleshooting is annoying, I have to backup files from users machines some of these files are running (like PST files), and I could need to backup a database or something from time to time. so whats your opinion all?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have some Ubuntu x64 8.04 servers that sometimes get stuck when rebooting. The only thing we see on the screen is "Loading, please wait" and some stuff below. I am attaching a picture of the monitor. We have this specific server set to reboot constantly while we try to figure out the issue however we don't know where to start, can we look at logs at this point (probably not since the hard drives aren't mounted yet), can we add debug info?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS with Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic-pae I was originally using usbmount to autmont the western digital external usb drive I had attached to the system and it was working great. However, while I was adding files to the drive i deleted all of the directories and files that came on the drive out of box such as 'autorun.inf' and an autorun directory containing an icon for the drive.. when I rebooted the drive was no longer mounted, I tried to un/reinstall usbmount a few times but it still didnt work, so I wound up adding the drive into my fstab, my fstab line reads like this

all is well on my headless Lucid server until a recent apt-get upgrade && shutdown -R now ... it did not come back up? after i moved a screen to the other side of the house, i found fcsk waiting for input during the boot process errors on / ... (I)gnore / (F)ix " ...so i had to attach a keyboard just to push <F> i could change /etc/fstab so it never runs fsck, but this doesn't seem wise. how can i make it <F>ix automatically ? ( or maybe after Xsec )

Anyway, the Ubuntu install all seemed to go ok but I'm having a major problem with the display not following what I'm doing and not updating as windows are opened and closed. Am I likely to be doing something silly or have I got a hardware conflict somewhere. Where should I start?

I do not have knowledge of ubuntu Nvidia drivers etc. because my previous installations (ie. 9.04) worked OK. I do not have a dual boot HDD, just a clean install.
By the way, I can upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 using the add/remove thing & everything works.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom tower. The live CD loads, I select Install Ubuntu, I get to the screen with the system checks, I hit install and... crash.
I'm guessing it's a hardware issue as I have it installed on 3 other computers no problem. Here are my specs code...
I've tried the 64bit and 32 bit versions, same thing. I tried installing it with Wubi, I reboot and it crashes shortly into the install. Is any of this hardware incompatible? Any suggestions I can try?

I have tried different methods to auto start wpa_supplicant at boot on Ubuntu Lucid server on a laptop which can't be connected to Ethernet.
The only thing that worked is adding the wpa_supplicant command before exit0 in rc.local. It solve my problem of wpa_supplicant auto start and annoyance on not be able to ssh before local login. But the screen stuck at Ubuntu Logo. How can i get pass Ubuntu logo screen to regular tty or xbmc in future?

I DLed 10.10 iso and burned it to cd. When I try to boot with cd, it starts up fine, I get the Ubuntu logo with rolling dots, but after a few mins it freezes (with logo still on screen). I have been running Ubuntu on this comp for years

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have this problem where the 10.10 LiveCD 64-bit works (as in I get full resolution display and no video issues at all). But after install, the OS boots successfully but there's no display. I know it's successful because I was able to login in the dark (sound works).
Here's what I have:
HP m9340f (NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS with HDMI)
46" Sharp connected via HDMI
Windows 7, works fine.
Here's what I tried with no luck:
1. CTRL-ALT-F1 still doesn't show anything on screen, no terminal
2. Connected via VGA
3. Connected another 17" monitor via VGA, rebooted
4. Added vga=789 in grub before booting
The weird thing is that I had 10.04 before and it was working for a while then it suddenly stopped working. I figured I'd wait until 10.10 but I now have the same issue. I haven't tried 32-bit... I can give that a shot in a bit.

I had to re-install openSUSE11.2 but I kept having either black screen or mouse cursor freeze. Using sax2 to change video driver didn't work whether "ati", "radeon" or "vesa" was selected. I finally came across a solution: 1. Log in at run level 3 with acpi=off, no apic,F3=vesa, then become root 2. YAST -> Miscellaneous -> Live Installer, etc. 3. Reboot 4. If black screen, force a reboot and repeat step1 5. Autoconfig restart? Yes 6. When installation is finished, reboot 7. Boot option: 3 acpi=off noapic F3(vesa) 8. Login as normal user then become root 9. #YAST > Online Update 10> #YAST > Edit Bootloader
11. Edit Grub menu: Add the following to the end of the kernel line (under heading: kernel options...): vga=792 acpi=off noapic. Note that vga=792 is from a LILO config file example, which has the side note:"vga=792 #you need to do this so it boots up in a sane state". I came across this from "Framebuffer HOWTO: Using framebuffer devices on Intel platforms" Your Grub menu may also show vga=0x317 but this is because you might have selected 1024x768 screen resolution;it has nothing to do with vga=792. Vga=792 is what essentially solves the black screen problem.
I am unable to install CentOS V5.4 on my work station.
After collecting the config info (root password, etc.) the installation immediately gets disk write errors while doing PVCREATE.
I'm installing from the DVD to the 136GB SCSI drive. The drive is known to be good and is writable as a Windows
volume.
The scsi drive is the only drive selected for installation.
I've selected to delete all partitions on the volume and install default configuration however the new partition is not created. code...

In the process of installing 11.2 over 10.2 everything goes fine until I reach a login screen. There I provide my previously supplied username and password and the result is logon failed. I have tried the install several times. The result is always the same.Login also does not work from console. Some surfing has provided the suggestion that the old Grub may still exist on the machine. Everytime I try to install i get LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY, CAUSE NOT REPORTABLE and some I/O error also if i DO the Check Disk thing its always perfect. Not sure it thats because im using usb.. idk.
