Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Works But No Display After Install / Solution For This?

Oct 10, 2010

I have this problem where the 10.10 LiveCD 64-bit works (as in I get full resolution display and no video issues at all). But after install, the OS boots successfully but there's no display. I know it's successful because I was able to login in the dark (sound works).

Here's what I have:
HP m9340f (NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS with HDMI)
46" Sharp connected via HDMI
Windows 7, works fine.

Here's what I tried with no luck:
1. CTRL-ALT-F1 still doesn't show anything on screen, no terminal
2. Connected via VGA
3. Connected another 17" monitor via VGA, rebooted
4. Added vga=789 in grub before booting

The weird thing is that I had 10.04 before and it was working for a while then it suddenly stopped working. I figured I'd wait until 10.10 but I now have the same issue. I haven't tried 32-bit... I can give that a shot in a bit.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD, Upgrade And Install Fail On 9.10 And 10.04 - 9.04 Works?

May 23, 2010

My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze / Glitch During Install And Live. Nothing Works?

Feb 6, 2011

Im trying to install Ubuntu, here are my problems and the solutions ive tried: I've downloaded 10.10 in 64 bit and 32 bit. I've also tried with 10.4.1 LTS.I've tried burning it to a disc and i've tried making a bootable USB. (I ran out of dvds so im only trying from usb now).I load from the disc/USB and ill get the menu asking if i want to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check for errors etc..... I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. Stuck that way until i restart. This also happens when i try to install it to the harddrive. It happens on both versions in both 64 and 32 bit. I checked the disc and all files are present.I've had ubuntu installed over a year ago.

AMD 64 3200 processor
nvidia geforce 7800gt
2gb ram

What should i do? Heres an image i took with my phone. http:[url].....

Ubuntu :: Display Not Updating On New Install / Solution For This?

Jan 21, 2010

I have just installed 9.10 on an old Dell C610 laptop as I had to install a new hard drive and didn't have the old XP licence number or COA!

Anyway, the Ubuntu install all seemed to go ok but I'm having a major problem with the display not following what I'm doing and not updating as windows are opened and closed. Am I likely to be doing something silly or have I got a hardware conflict somewhere. Where should I start?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless: Works On Live CD, Does Not Work After Install?

Jun 12, 2011

Per the HowTo post a Wireless Issue Sticky, I have included the information in the 10 steps below. Here is the description of my problem: I am getting back into Linux after purchasing a new PC (have not owned one personally for several months). I purchased an HP, as I've had personal success with them. It is an HP Pavilion g4 Notebook. When I booted the Live CD, I was pleased that wireless just worked. However, after installing, wireless does not work. The Additional Drivers Tool appears to recognize my wireless card;however, when I attempt to active the driver, I receive an "installation failed" dialog.ere are two screenshots:And here are the results of the file from the second screenshot:

Ubuntu Installation :: System Freezes After Upgrade - No Live USB Works

Feb 5, 2011

I was running 10.04 with no problems. Upgraded. I may or may not have lost power before the upgrade was finished. Now my system locks out the keyboard and mouse on the login screen...nocapslock light or anything, but I know it's still running because the clock at the bottom increments once per minute. Booting safemode does not help, it simply hangs at some point on the scrolling black screen instead.I can boot 9.04, which is still installed on another partition, just fine.Is there any way I can boot to a terminal and try running apt-get again, to see if I can fix whatever's wrong?

Fedora Installation :: 12 Live/KDE: Only One Processor Core Works?

Mar 6, 2010

I wanted to try Fedora 12 Live/KDE on a newly-bought Fujitsu Esprimo P1500. Booting with no kernel options would just freeze the machine. After some random experimentation, I added the option "nolapic" and got a seemingly working machine. However, only seemingly, as it turned out that only one of the processor cores was working (the processor is a "Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300").

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install Crashes / Solution For This?

Nov 13, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom tower. The live CD loads, I select Install Ubuntu, I get to the screen with the system checks, I hit install and... crash.

I'm guessing it's a hardware issue as I have it installed on 3 other computers no problem. Here are my specs code...

I've tried the 64bit and 32 bit versions, same thing. I tried installing it with Wubi, I reboot and it crashes shortly into the install. Is any of this hardware incompatible? Any suggestions I can try?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Display Cuts Out Intermittently / Solution For This?

Mar 16, 2011

After installing the latest version of opensuse I have it up and running, except that the display goes black about every 30 seconds for a moment and then comes back again.

I am guessing it is because I don't have enough ram for this OS? I am using a HP tower and I think it only has at most 512mb ram right now.

Can someone tell me if this is the issue or anything else I might try in the meantime?

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Works With "noacpi" But Wireless Doesn't?

Aug 26, 2010

see some histry here: [URL].. I have managed to get the 10.04 Live CD to boot on an HP All-in-one 200-5020, using "noacpi". However I am unable to get wireless to work. Would this be an issue with the PCI Express slot that the wireless card is installed in? I did use 32-bit, should I be trying 64-bit? If I install using "noacpi", does this mean that ACPI funstionality won't work on the machine once Ubuntu is installed?

Thanks for your help - trying to work out if I persist, or take the machine back to the shop (would prefer not - I like it - but I don't want to have to live with Win7).

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Boot Fail "Cannot Display This Mode"

Aug 28, 2010

Trying to boot Ubuntu 10.04.1 live CD and I get nowhere because the screen just stays black, with a monitor OSD alert saying "Cannot display this mode."

Is there a consumer version of Ubuntu available for regular people to use? I searched on the fourms and any post about "cannot display this mode" advises users to edit configuration files, or go into command line mode... what is this, 1991?

What is the real solution to this? Or is Ubuntu not made for consumer users? What other options do I have besides Mandrake?

The Ubuntu screenshots looks swell, nice graphic design of the user interface, pretty, but they should make the installer/live CD actually work like any other OS in 2010 first tho'.

Ubuntu Installation :: Neither 10.10 CD Or USB Install Works

Dec 5, 2010

This is an existing bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/636711) but since there doesn't seem to be too much happening over there, I thought I'd post this development here to see if anyone can make something out of it. Basically, any attempt to launch a (MDSUM-confirmed) CD or USB image of 10.10 will fail on certain computers. The install process fails, leaving a message like:

Quote: mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /filesystem.squashfs failed: input/output error

Now here's the new development. I have two nearly identical Compaq Evo desktops at the office and one fails as above while the other loads and installs 10.10 perfectly (using the same USB disk). I would imagine that this would make a good test case for the bug, so I've posted the lshw output from both machines (one running 10.10 and other running 8.10) here [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Works But Does Not Install

Nov 14, 2010

If I run Ubuntu 10.4 LIVE from CD everything works fine. However, when I try to install, it hangs up at about 23% (while installing Firefox). I thought my HD had a problem, but the same happened after checking it had no bad sectors and even after replacing it. Same as above using a CD of version 8.4 ( live works, install doesn't complete). Same trying the Alternate in place of the Desktop edition. With the same CD's I already installed successfully on other machines. Booting from USB SHOULD be possible ( according to BIOS settings ) but apparently it doesn't work.

Present machine characteristics :
AMD Athlon 2200+ 1.8 Ghz
512 MB RAM
HD EIDE 40 GB (Master of the Primary channel)
BIOS AMI dated 13-05-2003
Motherboard : no brand
Two EIDE CD drives (as Master and Slave of the Secondary channel).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10, Takes 30-45 Minutes For Installation/Live Environment To Load. Install Slow?

Apr 27, 2011

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.

After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Bootup After Install But LiveCD Works Great

No Bootup just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor after install, but LIVE CD works in 1024x768 mode? Well, I have a Sony Bravia 32xTV with HDMI input coming out of a ZOTAC nvidia type of card. The live CD will recognize the HDMI graphics card and Sony TV/monitor and thus works like Ubuntu normally does. But when I go to install to a hard drive and try to boot up I get just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor. I even have another Ubuntu 8.04 version running on the Sony Bravia TV , so no problem with TV end of things. what do I do now, oh great Ubuntu gurus out there in cyberland? what could I possibly do , what do I read, where do I go , what, where, who, how, when ,which way?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install From Live Cd

Mar 20, 2011

I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on a Gateway laptop that is a 3.06 gigahertz Intel pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram. I'm using the live cd but can't get the computer to boot to the cd. My BIOS is set to boot from cd/rom but I'm not getting the typical Ubuntu menu, which includes install, when I boot the computer. I get the Ubuntu loading screen with the graphical loading dots and when that completes I get a blank screen. I've installed Ubuntu on 4 or 5 other PCs and have never had this problem. I'm trying to completely remove XP and replace with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Normally on booting from the Ubuntu cd I get a menu immediately which includes complete installation, but not with this computer.
