Ubuntu Servers :: Install Is Stuck At Partition?
Dec 24, 2010
I am trying to turn an old HP Pavillion 6630 desktop into a home server, and due to my own relative inexperience using linux I decided on a ubuntu server. However, when I get to the partitioner it shows me an error screen: [!!] Partition disks<Go Back> <Continue>I can only choose to go back or continue, and no matter which one i press it goes to a non-responsive blue screen. A slightly worse version of the BSoD if you will. I assumed this was a hardware problem initially, however the hard drive boots fine into windows still, and it still might be a hardware issue, I would just like some other input on what the problem might be.

I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.

I have a laptop with a large harddrive. Originally I had the sda1 which was a dell recovery partition, sda2 which is my Win7 partition. I created a new primary partition to try out ubuntu. Falling in love with the OS, I wished to grow the partition but I already had 4 primary partitions.
I deleted my swap partition and converted that to an extended partition, I then grew it to a 100gb extended partition. I created 2 new primary partitions, one for swap and one for the OS..
So my drives are as follows:
This is what I have done thus far:
1. Booted to live CD
2. Mounted /dev/sda4 and /dev/sda6
3. cp -afvR /oldOSPartition /newOSPartition
4. In the NEW OS partition, I updated /etc/fstab to reflect the UUID's of the new disks.
5. I updated /etc/mtools.conf and /etc/mtab as well.
6. I rebooted to old OS partition and ran update-grub && update-grub2
7. I can see the new entries in the grub boot menu
8. I select the kernel entry for /dev/sda6 (NEW OS), it boots, but when I hit the desktop, I open an terminal and do a "mount" and I am somehow still mounted/booted to sda4 (old OS).
From here, I re-mounted /dev/sda6 to a temporary mount point and did a "cd /; grep -r 'sda4' * > /matches.txt"
I also searched for the UUID and I found no matches so I don't know why it reverted to sda4.
Even if I boot to the recovery console entry for /dev/sda6 in the grub menu, same thing, it keeps mounting sda4.

I have a windows partition mounted that will not allow me to load my kubuntu 10.10 meerkat. i can enter an older kernal but my older kernal says cant contact kded and all my kde apps will not work such as wireless networking and autp ip configurations. although i can run the internet in this kernal wired however manually putting my ip and other numbers in for wireless connection fails. all other kernals do not load because they say i have a ntfs drive mounted. so my question is how can i unmount this drive and make my kernal work again or how can i fix kded from crashing on my second kernal so i can use that one. i have already tried sudo unmount /media/windows and other simular commands i also tried a mounting app and reinstalling kubunt desktop also check disk on windows with clean shut down does not work either.

Deleted the Ubuntu partition by accident. Now at a loss as how to get Windows working again. I had all my files saved, and did a full format and reinstall to Windows. Thinking that it would just overwrite grub but this thing is like a virus.. I cant do **** at the grub rescure command prompt... it just sits there with a cursor... Even stuff like reboot and quit or exit don't even work... what the hell? So I pop my Win7 install cd in and I find that for some reason I have no recovery console... just the option to install. I install but no grub, the little virus is still there and I just wasted an hour of my life while Win7 installed again because I still cant view it.
I deleted all the partitions and wiped the entire disc and grub is still there.. I was thinking that Windows would just replace grub automatically. Heh the Bootsector always seems to get owned on Windows and I expected grub to be just as useless but in it's own way, it's worse.

I recently partitioned my hard drive so that I could have Linux in addition to Windows Seven on my laptop. For some reason, at boot it it showed not only Linux, a Recovery mode for Linux, and a Windows 7 OS, but also a Windows Vista OS that I never installed. Yesterday, A friend of mine borrowed my computer and chose to open Vista. Since then my computer has been stuck at the grub rescue screen with nothing other than the message: error: no such partition grub rescue>

We have some Ubuntu x64 8.04 servers that sometimes get stuck when rebooting. The only thing we see on the screen is "Loading, please wait" and some stuff below. I am attaching a picture of the monitor. We have this specific server set to reboot constantly while we try to figure out the issue however we don't know where to start, can we look at logs at this point (probably not since the hard drives aren't mounted yet), can we add debug info?

I recently used a GParted CD to resize my partition with Vista installed on it in order to make room for another partition in which I installed Linux onto. I, unfortunately, did not back up my data. My Vista partition now does not show up in Grub and when I set it to just boot to the Vista install it will never boot and is stuck in a loop.
I tried using this guide to try to get it back. My problem comes about halfway through this guide when I go to repair my Vista installation nothing shows up under installations. I would really like to get my data from the Vista partition. I guess if I'm SOL then at least I'll remember to backup my data next time..

I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS with Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic-pae I was originally using usbmount to autmont the western digital external usb drive I had attached to the system and it was working great. However, while I was adding files to the drive i deleted all of the directories and files that came on the drive out of box such as 'autorun.inf' and an autorun directory containing an icon for the drive.. when I rebooted the drive was no longer mounted, I tried to un/reinstall usbmount a few times but it still didnt work, so I wound up adding the drive into my fstab, my fstab line reads like this

all is well on my headless Lucid server until a recent apt-get upgrade && shutdown -R now ... it did not come back up? after i moved a screen to the other side of the house, i found fcsk waiting for input during the boot process errors on / ... (I)gnore / (F)ix " ...so i had to attach a keyboard just to push <F> i could change /etc/fstab so it never runs fsck, but this doesn't seem wise. how can i make it <F>ix automatically ? ( or maybe after Xsec )

I have tried different methods to auto start wpa_supplicant at boot on Ubuntu Lucid server on a laptop which can't be connected to Ethernet.
The only thing that worked is adding the wpa_supplicant command before exit0 in rc.local. It solve my problem of wpa_supplicant auto start and annoyance on not be able to ssh before local login. But the screen stuck at Ubuntu Logo. How can i get pass Ubuntu logo screen to regular tty or xbmc in future?

Stuck in tty after installing a Nvidia driver. I've gone through all of the steps in [URL] including the last problem where it temporarily freezes on the load screen. However there wasn't any documentation after that point. Notes for readers:Pressing Cntrl Alt F7 just sticks me to a stuck screen and not the GUI.

In the process of installing 11.2 over 10.2 everything goes fine until I reach a login screen. There I provide my previously supplied username and password and the result is logon failed. I have tried the install several times. The result is always the same.Login also does not work from console. Some surfing has provided the suggestion that the old Grub may still exist on the machine. If so, how do I get rid of it?

Forgive the terseness. I'm frazzled with this issue, perhaps I should have asked earlier. Every weekend for the past 2 months has been an endless cycle of 'repair broken system' off the install disk.
Installed from Ubuntu server 10.04LTS x86_64, + xfce-desktop Here is uname -a Linux ournas 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux If I add my raid + lvm to the fstab file, the boot stalls, (no error it, just hangs waiting, forever). So that's a not very user friendly to start with.
I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?

I just bought a new hard drive and decided to upgrade to 10.4.2 (I was running 9.10).I started doing the normal customizations that come with a new install. I tried to play an mp3 file and the sstem offered to install the new gstreamer codecs(ffmpeg,fluendo-mp3, and plugins-ugly).I click on install and it is stuck at preparing libavformat52.The terminal details state:Code: dpkg: warning: files list file for package 'libavformat52' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed.Preparing to replace libavformat52 4:0.5.1-1ubuntu1 (using./libavformat52_4%3a0.5.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb).Unpacking replacement libavformat52.It was stuck so long and I could not kill it (did not know what to kill), so I rebooted once before this message.

I have been trying to get ubuntu 10.4 running on a Packard Bell Easynote r1004. Having had problems with 9.10 I tried 10.4 first booting from the live cd to test compatibility and was supprised when I was presented with a logon screen. Of cause I could not logon as there was no password setup. So I rebooted and went for a clean install. I set a username and password in the install process. When installed I entered the correct password, and it looked for about a second that all was going to be well, but then the password screen reappeared. I tried entering again in case of a type and even entering an incorrect password. The incorrect password was correctly rejected. I have reinstalled 3 times with 3 different copies of the cd all copies are official copies and they work on other pc's. It just returns to the passsword screen each time you enter the password.

I burned a disk with Ubuntu on it, put it in and used the "try" function. I spent a couple hours on it and liked it. I decided to hit the install button on the desktop, it all went smoothly. It froze during the "logging off" process, so I cold booted it. Upon restart, I was prompted again to try/install Ubuntu. (Again, I've already installed it, or so I think...) Well, what the heck. I install it again, it freezes and I let it be. I come back to find it, once again, on the try/install screen. I'm currently on the "try" function again. How do I cure my lack of an installed copy of Ubuntu?

I can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.
Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.
