I seem to be stuck on an loading screen of sorts after booting Ubuntu 10.04 from CD (the screen which shows the Ubuntu logo and 5 red/white blinking dots below). Boot options tried were: live, live-powerpc and check-powerpc (which showed no errors in the files)
View 4 Repliesi recently got a hold of a macbook 3.1, installed ubuntu 10.04 on it(Single boot). When i got the macbook the OSX that was installed on it had some serious issues, so without the OSX restore disk i had nothing so i hopped on my friends macbook pro and dled Ubuntu burnt it to a disk and installed it flawlessly on my macbook 3.1. During that installation i did remove the old OSX partitions completely and created a new one for ubuntu(the whole HD). later i was able to find a OSX Leopard backup on the interweb so on my pc i downloaded tit and burnt it to a dvd. When i try to boot from startup i just get a blinking cursor it stayed like that all while i took a 2 hour nap. Note that from within ubuntu i could see all the files on the disk so thats issue number one
Number 2 is that im trying to burn a dvd from a iso in ubuntu and when ever i insert a blank disk it says its unreadable and when i try to eject it it gets stuck. i have to hold the mouse button while it reboots in order to get it out. Whats causing this? how do i fix these issues. Eventually i want to startover and put mac osx on there (for steam) and ubuntu for primary use.
Stuck in tty after installing a Nvidia driver. I've gone through all of the steps in [URL] including the last problem where it temporarily freezes on the load screen. However there wasn't any documentation after that point. Notes for readers:Pressing Cntrl Alt F7 just sticks me to a stuck screen and not the GUI.

In the process of installing 11.2 over 10.2 everything goes fine until I reach a login screen. There I provide my previously supplied username and password and the result is logon failed. I have tried the install several times. The result is always the same.Login also does not work from console. Some surfing has provided the suggestion that the old Grub may still exist on the machine. If so, how do I get rid of it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI cant seem to get Opensuse 11.4 to install I am stuck using a USB drive but using the imagewriter program that Suse provides to do a usb installation. Everytime I try to install i get LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY, CAUSE NOT REPORTABLE and some I/O error also if i DO the Check Disk thing its always perfect. Not sure it thats because im using usb.. idk.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to turn an old HP Pavillion 6630 desktop into a home server, and due to my own relative inexperience using linux I decided on a ubuntu server. However, when I get to the partitioner it shows me an error screen: [!!] Partition disks<Go Back> <Continue>I can only choose to go back or continue, and no matter which one i press it goes to a non-responsive blue screen. A slightly worse version of the BSoD if you will. I assumed this was a hardware problem initially, however the hard drive boots fine into windows still, and it still might be a hardware issue, I would just like some other input on what the problem might be.

View 10 Replies View RelatedToward the end of installing Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (Alt CD) on my iMac 11,1, the installer asked me to type in the location for installing the grub boot loader.
I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?

When I run it live, I see KDE4. When I install it off the same disk, it installs Gnome. I can't figure out how to install KDE4. I had no luck with apt-get install kde4 (E: Couldn't find package kde4), no luck with aptitude, no luck with Synaptic (The following packages have unresolved dependencis kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to get ubuntu 10.4 running on a Packard Bell Easynote r1004. Having had problems with 9.10 I tried 10.4 first booting from the live cd to test compatibility and was supprised when I was presented with a logon screen. Of cause I could not logon as there was no password setup. So I rebooted and went for a clean install. I set a username and password in the install process. When installed I entered the correct password, and it looked for about a second that all was going to be well, but then the password screen reappeared. I tried entering again in case of a type and even entering an incorrect password. The incorrect password was correctly rejected. I have reinstalled 3 times with 3 different copies of the cd all copies are official copies and they work on other pc's. It just returns to the passsword screen each time you enter the password.

I decided to hit the install button on the desktop, it all went smoothly. It froze during the "logging off" process, so I cold booted it. Upon restart, I was prompted again to try/install Ubuntu. (Again, I've already installed it, or so I think...) Well, what the heck. I install it again, it freezes and I let it be. I come back to find it, once again, on the try/install screen. I'm currently on the "try" function again. How do I cure my lack of an installed copy of Ubuntu?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.
Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.
Having an issue with a fresh install which gets stuck at partitions formatting 33%. Tried different HDD's, 2 optical drives, 4 sticks of RAM, different SATA cable, disconnect floppy. Have tried both normal and alt cd images using different burn speeds.

View 2 Replies View RelatedTrying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP 6540b laptop - dual boot with Windows 7. I keep getting stuck on:
1. [GUI install] after step 3 of 7 where a KB layout (I've tried many other layout) is selected then going next and it hangs there trying to do something.
2. [Alternative install] stuck on 45% of scanning disks at "Starting up the partitioner" code...
I've tried desktop 32bit and 64bit install and also alternative 32 and 64. Also tried installing from CD & USB drive.
I guess it's something to do with the disk partition? Anyone come across this before?
I've installed 10.04 with similar dual boot partitions layout on an older HP 6710b without any issues.
I used to have my ubuntu 10.04 running with a virtualbox for a windows xp. I remove that virtualbox and create another one, bigger, with 10gb. On the process, my computer freezes.. now I'm stuck on that initramfs screen.I really need to recover my linux (I have apache, mysql, samba, all up and running).I can reach "grub" booting with right shift pressed, but I really don't know where I have to begin.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI logged out of KDE and started a new session in IceWM just to check it out. When I logged out of IceWM my system crashed and I had to restart. Now it logs in automatically to IceWM. If I log out of IceWM it crashes and I have to hard restart it. When I log out of IceWM it just shows a messed up nvidia logo.

After its successful completion it got into a strange situation: the boot loader identified a boot record on the hard drive and displayed the appropriate message on the screen - but then nothing happened. When I restarted the system with the live CD and chose "boot from hard drive" it got to the normal boot menu without difficulty. I have no idea why the second method succeeds while the first fails

This is a zypper dup from latest 11.3.The machine boots with acpi=off, luckily. But I'd like to have it all working.The forum says I can't post attachments; hwinfo output seems a bit copious to quote inline. But I'd be happy to provide any additional info obviously.
I downloaded ubuntu 11.04 and did the usual shizz and it was all going well. I went to get a drink and by the time i got back my computer had completely crashed. I cant move the mouse or anything and it is stuck on 'Installing System'.
Ive restarted my computer (unplug), i had to format the harddrive i was installing it on (luckily it was empty already).
I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.
