I am looking for the best solution for backup, I want to backup the /home/user.I know about rdiff, and rsync but is there a better solution for backup these folder.And the security must be good, The backup I want to make is from a server to a server in a datacenter.Both servers are running on UBUNTU 9.10.

I need to install a backup server in my work environment.We have a Windows 2008 server and an old DELL PowerEdge 1750 server that has no OS on it yet.I would like to install Fedora on it and then backup the Windows Server data on the Fedora server using rsync or something else to do the backups.Do you think it's a good idea ? If not what would you use to backup the Windows server data, preferably on a linux system.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am mainly a Windows admin, but I do *NIX administration from time to time, for now I need to use an open source solution for backup windows environment mainly, I spent last days playing with bacula and backupPC, and I then chose backupPC, I built a solution with it seems working not bad, but before i go on deeper, I thought asking geeks here better, my main experience with back was with Vertias/Symantec Backup Exec, what do you recommend as most similar backup solution in Ubuntu offer a close level (I don't backup to tapes I back to hard disks), also a gui is preferred, while backupPC do a nice work and i handled its client config file (machine_name.pl), but I still do mistakes sometimes and troubleshooting is annoying, I have to backup files from users machines some of these files are running (like PST files), and I could need to backup a database or something from time to time. so whats your opinion all?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a server at home, it has some practical implications, but largely it is just to take a stab at it. But I need the help of someone with more experience than I in defining exactly what I'm looking to do.
Here's what I have: old PC running Gutsy server connected to router. Several laptops at home connected via wifi to router. All laptops running either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I'm looking for: The server centralizes file storage for all clients. I would likely incorporate a RAID and some synchronised imaging of the files. I also want the server to create disk images of the clients hdd, regardless of client OS.There would also be some shares that would be publicly accessible (myself and friends accross the country would be able to access the same drive).
So I was thinking something like what corporate environment would be nice, you log into a profile that exists on the server. Like a dumb client...all data would be stored on the server. But I'm thinking that's more like a network boot and wouldn't work via wifi (or would it?). Also that wouldn't lend itself well to laptops used on the road in areas without net access. now I'm thinking each client would have its own locally installed OS, and they would just access networked shares. I could store sensitive files on the shares, but that wouldn't provide complete backup solution for each client.
Without rambling on anymore, anyone care to throw out some ideas? I'm really just looking to see if I can do what I want. The focus is on centrallizing files, securley backing up data and client OS's and ability to restore said images quickly.
using Back In Time to backup my home directory to a second hdd that is mounted at /media/backupThe trouble is, I can do this using Back In Time (Root), but not using Back In Time without the root option. This is definitely a permissions issue - it can't write to the folder, but when I checked by right clicking on the backup directory and looking at the permission tab, it said I was the owner

1) lock and flush tables on a mysql db
2) dump the db to a file
3) unlock the tables
4) rsync the file to offsite storage
It all seems to be going well. However, obviously I don't want to setup ssh to the storage server on another network as the root user without a password. so I am attempting to su as the backup user inside of the script but when I try to run the script everything happens as it should until I try to so.. then it jumps out of the script .. akss me to login as the backup user.. proceeds to rsync to the offsite storage it does all this and then resumes execiting the script. it is not going to be setup as a cron job. it will be executed manually. assuming that is the case, how can I get the script to run without prompting for a password?
Here is what I've come up with so far... assuming that the script is run as root and the identity of the backup user will need to be assumed inside the script without perstering the user to enter the backup user's password.

I've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?

Did some test, user joe can ssh to the server but unable to do anything aside from logging in, even a simple ls command will immediately close the putty session. I have fedora 13. Is there online based automatic backup solution that satisfy these requirements.Any file that I modify or create new in /home is automatically backup online and also encrypted on regular intervals such as 5 times a day. The backup system only uploads what was changed and not the whole file again. Any other folders that I specify are backed up in the same way as /home. /home also contains disk images of virtual operating systems. When I startup those VM and create or edit some files within VM, these should also become part of the online backup. Since these disk images are typically 20 GB in size so the online backup simply cannot upload the whole disk image over the wire on a regular basis.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am replacing a home network - Windows Server 2003 and 5 PCs (XP Pro) with UBUNTU 10.4 LTS Server and client versions. I am keeping a couple of the PCs with dual boot until I can migrate everything over (Having some issues with iTunes, Family Tree Maker, Media serving, DVD decrypt and a couple of others, but that is for another post). It was great fun getting the server up and running using only shell commands. Took me ages just to get a folder shared! Migrating the data over from NTFS to ext3 was also fun given the limited space on the partitions.
I really only want to use the server for communal network type things ... central user account maintenance, shared folders for music, video etc and data backup. I don't need it to be performing server functions on the Internet e.g. web server etc although that may come later. How I set up central user management? All the PCs are currently setup with local user ids, and it is a bit of a pain to go round each PC every time I change something.
The server is not always up, so I need to be able to log into the local PC without it being active. I was using Active Directory on Server 2003, but I don't need anything that complex really ... just 3 or 4 users to manage. I have been looking at the setup tutorial at [URL] but am not sure how relevant a lot of it is. I have SSH setup so I can login remotely, NFS is working to share the folders, but that is about all I have done so far.
Can anybody please suggest a backup-image solution for Fedora 14?I made some tests with Clonezilla: it works fine but, please correct if I am wrong, it requires booting from a Clonezilla CD and cannot be used to take an image backup while the computer is running.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to make a server in my home that could be used to backup old job files at a print shop that I work at, creating a low cost offsite backup for our backup server. It would only backup 30-200mb a night, depending on what size the various jobs are.
There are 4 workstations that backup to a network share hosted on a fileserver(tower). It only has a single TB drive, and now people are offloading files to this server to free there computer of disk space. This is going to be a problem once the "server" disk fails. The managment there will not pay a monthly fee for 500+GB of files we prob will never need, but cant delete. I was hoping I could create some sort of "online" backup hosted at my house. ( like amazon, carbonite but without the fancy gui)
After researching a while I can't seem to come up with a great solution (partly due to my lack of networking knowledge i'm sure!). I have a pfSense router, with VPN capabilities, and the router at work (Cisco/Linksys RVS4000) also can VPN. I would like to use linux as the server, I am in the process of learning Ubuntu. Also freeNAS via FTP is another thought, might be easier?
As I checked some online backup solutions I have found information that all of this which I checked have only clients for Win or Mac. But I'm looking for solution with Linux client.As I have read some info on one of the Googled page Linux probably is ready for being an online backup solution as is.So my idea is to create automatic (in the background) backup of my files (photos and docs) with my outside hosting server. This is so that Apache can be part of this group and can access user public HTML directory, but other users are not able to access in any way the files in the users home directory. What I have seen that works manually is adding the user and then changing the group for the home directory. But I want to automatically set this when the user account is created. WHat I see happening is that when /etc/skel is copied, it automatically sets the group and ownership of everything to the users default group and ownership. I've seen some suggestions on setting permissions, but these don't seem to work because it seems that users are able to cd into a directory and not list it, but if they know the file name they can access the file.

Do I have to install all the software that corresponds to the old home first followed by migrating home or first migrating home followed by installing the software such as thunderbird, Texlive2010 etc.Guess that migration should take place at a later stage. I've setup Kerberos and OpenLDAP servers (9.10) similar to the official documentation (and other sites that fill in the "gaps"). However, when you start to get in to some of the details, there seem to be many options - and I guess I'm looking for what could be the defacto standard. I'd like to allow Ubuntu clients to have a sso capability, with the ability for local caching of passwords if not connected to the network (such as a laptop user away from the office, prior to a VPN). I'd like to automount a secure NFS share somewhere in the /home directory. If the user logs in to a computer they've not logged in to before (if they're authorized), it would be nice if a skeleton /home directory could be setup there automatically I'm guessing that it is not desirable to use a shared /home NFS - as if you're off the network this would be problematic - as well as multiple computers sharing the same /home. There are some benefits to a shared /home (SSH certs, etc.), so maybe there is a hybrid approach out there.
I've read that it's not necessarily good practice to have OpenLDAP to do the authentication (leave this to Kerberos), but it's fine for authorization (such as ACLs for logins to certain computers). It's also good practice to use TLS with OpenLDAP (which requires public certs on all the clients) and to not allow anonymous read to the directory. I would guess that a computer host keytab could be refreshed to bind to the OpenLDAP server via GSSAPI / SASL to allow a non-anonymous read, and then determine if, say, the user was a member of a group allowed to log in. Kerberos would then pick up and authenticate the user and then proceed to the login. Off the network here, I'm not sure. I found this document, but it's self declared missing items: [URL]

There are a lot of backup solutions, many scripts based of rsync. The problem is not a lot of them encrypt your data before syncing it. I have a USB hard drive and I want to backup my user folder /home/myuser/ to the external drive What software will allow me to create incremental backups which are encrypted with relative ease

Ok, I have Apache httpd set up so I can use a public_html folder inside of my /home/username directory. Now, I'm about to take a web dev course that teaches JSP/Servlets for building web applications and I'd like to set my environment up so that I can execute .jsps from my web root (/home/username/public_html) just like I would a CGI or PHP script. I have a web host that will give me JSP support for a few extra bucks a month, but I'd rather do it locally... and free.
I have Tomcat installed and running wonderfully. The test page and all the examples work fine and execute immediately. But when I try to execute a .jsp file inside of my web root (/home/username/public_html) I just get the raw Java tags and plain-old HTML rendered in my browser. I pretty much knew that wouldn't work; that'd be way too easy. I just wanted to see what would happen.
I looked through all the tomcat ".conf" files I could find to see if it was similar to setting up httpd inside of my home directory, but I didn't have any luck. It's not a file permissions problem... I've been messing with web "scripts" long enough to check that the files are executable. All of the files needed (borrowed from the examples that come with Tomcat) were in their correct paths inside of my web root, as well. Added :8080 to the end of localhost (like you do to see the Tomcat test page(s) instead of the httpd test page) but that didn't help.
I scoured the web for directions but could only find one solution that was Ubuntu-specific (just install tomcat6-user-something-or-another.deb, which doesn't exist in the Fedora repos), then I looked around here, trying every search term that seemed reasonable to me, and I can't find anything.
I realize I can just write the code and put it in a directory that does allow these things to be executed (var/lib/tomcat6/blah-blah-blah/going-by-memory) and run them from there, but I'd like to be able to just keep all of my web files in the same place; a place where I have full permission to do whatever I want... my home directory public_html.
Is this possible (has to be, right?)? Is this a dumb idea to begin with (I'm prone)? What is the best way to develop JSP/Servlets without having to deal with permissions every time I want to put a new script in a directory outside of my home directory that's already set up to allow the execution of said script?
I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:

It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump
"Upgraded" from FC5 32 bit to Fedora 10 64 bit using Fedora Live KDE disk, and unchecking the boxes to format drives with my personal data. In the install it recognized these as SW raid devices. One is raid 1, the other raid 5.
Now, it still recognizes the raid devices, and mdstat claims they are working fine, but I cannot mount them (mount says must specify a FS type, but that doesn't work either).
I recently moved (~65mi). I have all my files on my Linux Server at home. I want to find a way to have 2 Ubuntu Workstations (at my office/apartment) and Laptop to all be able to stream my media from my home server. (The server get about 600kbps upstream).
Accessing the files I found OpenVPN and NFS to work great - however streaming my videos hasn't been so good - its extremely choppy and unwatchable. I realize there is no perfect solution, but is there anything that could be setup to buffer/prefetch/compress videos making them tolerable to watch?
Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -

Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.
I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"
