Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Domain Not Serving Up Scripts?

Apr 13, 2011

My samba domain controller will not serve up scripts upon login, and acts very slow when not connected to the Internet. Also, network browsing from windows boxes shows no computers on the network once all this happens. Once the net connection comes back up, everything is fine.

Domain server:

Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Samba 3.4.7

Router: Smoothwall Express 3.0-polar-i386 3.0 (update6). Router is set up as DHCP, and appears to be serving up normal IP's when the Internet connection goes down. I can ping the domain server at its normal IP when the connection goes down.

Heres my smb.conf:

Code:

[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
passwd chat = *Entersnews*spassword:* %n
*Retypesnews*spassword:* %n

[code]....

This only happens when our internet connection goes down. When its up, everything is works fine.

Ubuntu Servers :: Ubuntu Server For File Downloading And Serving

Dec 2, 2010

I would like to run a small file server at home which I could connect to both remotely and within my own network. I was thinking of using something similar to a cheap dell optiplex machine (Pentium 3 or 4 2GHz?, with 256mb ram and a 40GB hard drive[will do something about the lack of space later]).The file server part of this should be straightforward but I wanted advice on how I could manage downloads on the machine. On my laptop I currently use both firefox's built in download manager and JDownloader. Sometimes Jdownloader isn't the ideal solution for all downloads, e.g. sometimes a single connection through firefox gets a faster download speed. I also occcasionally download torrents through Miro.

If anyone has setup something like what I'm suggesting, could you please give me a general idea of how best to go about this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Configuring Samba Permissions To Emulate Netware?

Apr 22, 2010

I'm replacing an ancient Netware server with a new Ubuntu 8.04 box running samba and LDAP. I want to see if there's a way to get Samba to emulate the way permissions propagate through Netware. Namely, if I see a directory structure like this:

[User Cant See]
--- [User Cant See]
------- User Can Edit.txt
------- User CANT Edit.txt

With Netware I can give permission to User to edit "User Can Edit.txt" and the permissions will propagate in reverse to allow User to see the two [User Cant See] directories and edit the text file. "User CANT Edit.txt" will still be invisible to User. This is very convenient as I can simply give user access to one file, they can navigate to it through the directory structure, and all files not explicitly given access to will still be invisible.

With Samba the only way I've been seeing to get this would be to explicitly give User access to both [User Cant See] directories, give him access to the "User Can Edit.txt" and remove any access to "User CANT Edit.txt" and every other file in the latter two nested directories.

Ubuntu Servers :: Serving Multiple Domains To One Website

Aug 5, 2010

I have a domain.com site up and running on my server. I just bought domain.net, domain.org and I would like it to point to the same site on domain.com. I am not sure how to go about doing this.I used zoneedit for my dns. So far I have pointed my 2 new domains to the same dns as my .com on zoneedit and I have created (A) ip address for them. If I did this correctly, the new domains are pointing to my server and all is left is to edit the virtualhost?

General :: Internet File Serving Discussion

Mar 28, 2010

I have another generalized question for you all. I'm thinking about setting up my server at home in a sort of 'cloud storage' capacity. What I mean by that is, I'd like to be able to basically use it as an attached drive or maybe through a browser interface and read/write files to it from the internet at other locations (work, most specifically). NFS is limited and would be a pain to setup as you need to auth every user and location. I've heard talk about SSHFS and AFS, and am looking into them but nothing has popped yet.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.10 - Samba Restart (File Not There)

Oct 13, 2010

I recently installed Server 10.10 64-bit. After installation, I set up my config file (/etc/samba/smb.conf), and tried to restart Samba:
Code:
/etc/init.d/samba restart
There was nothing to restart though - the file /etc/init.d/samba wasn't there!
Purged the package and re-installed. Tried reformatting and adding Samba as a pre-installed package. Trying to find the server guide for 10.10, but no dice. Did something change for Samba in 10.10?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Windows File Server W/ Samba On Fedora 11?

Mar 29, 2011

I'm trying to load a HP Proliant w/ Fedora 11 and setting up as a WFS using Samba. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do it. Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.

So I configured the /etc/samba/smb.conf ,but it did not work well : Windows can find samba, but when I tap in username and password, samba request them again , and the same thing continues in a loop. So I copied another computer's smb.conf (which is also a Fedora 11,samba runs well in this one).I copied this file to /etc/samba/ ,then samba can't satart up . I read from /var/log/samba/log.smbd.log : Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": Permission denied Even if I use: chmod 777 /etc/samba/smb.conf

Ubuntu :: Configuring Samba On 2 Different Networks

Jul 17, 2010

i have to different routers in my home. One is at&t dsl modem other is dlink wireless n router.

I have my ubuntu server connected to my att modem as this is the only way I can get it to work. As I can only connect to my server from the outside of my home.

Problem is my desktop and laptops use the dlink because its faster and giver me more bandwidth so everything in my home is wirelessly connected to it.

I use ubuntu as web server, proxy server, and dns server. I have all my computers useing the proxy server my just inputting my proxy address as 192.168.1.0 which is my ubuntu address. But my computers use 192.168.0.0 as this is how dlink is setup.

So anyone know how I can get all my pc's on the network 192.168.0.0 to connected to my samba server which is on 192.168.1.0? Can I setup my dlink dir-615 as a access point? So that it shows up in the 192.168.1.0 network. Or can i configure my pc's to look into the 192.168.1.0 network to see the samba server?

Ubuntu Servers :: Create Samba File Share To Windows Domain Clients?

Apr 28, 2010

I feel ashamed for even asking this, since it seems like there's about 3 samba questions here every day. However after an hour of searching, I keep finding strange variants that aren't what I need.

My Goal: Create a single file share on an Ubuntu Server - share it via samba to Windows clients that are on a domain with active directory. It sure would be nice if AD authentication would work - so users don't have to type in a linux user/passsword each time they want to access the share.

In my adventures, I've found the following items (which may overlap)

1. Joining the server to a Windows Domain

2. Turning the server into a Windows Domain Controller

3. Authentication with LDAP (still not quite sure how/what this would do)

4. Stuff with Kerberos

5. Lots of people bickering about Samba 3/4 & how it's impossible to make Samba a PDC.

I'm not sure if I need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller or not...all I want to do is create a file share and share it on the domain...I don't need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller for that, right? Maybe just a member? Maybe nothing at all?

I guess if I want to authenticate stuff correctly (or forward authentication requests? Not sure), I probably need to join the ubuntu server to the domain...I think.

But let's say I do join it to the domain...then how to I create a file share that is authenticated via active directory rather than a local ubuntu server account? I see a dozen guides on joining the server to the domain, but nobody ever mentions sharing the folder over the domain.

The lines are also blurred between joining Ubuntu to the domain and making it a domain controller. What should I keep an eye out to avoid in these tutorials?

I get lost between the Kerberos/LDAP/Samba/WinBind etc...and I have a feeling I don't need all of these for something this simple.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba To Replace Windows File Server In Active Directory?

Jul 22, 2010

We have a couple of Windows file servers that just share files. It is all they do. We'd like to use Ubuntu on two replacement servers allowing Windows XP and Windows 7 clients to access the files. Our network is active directory based due to Exchange and homegrown .NET apps, so it is important that active directory is used to authenticate the clients. Samba doesn't need to be a pdc or bdc, but provide pass through authentication.I understand that Samba can communicate with active directory through security-ads and security-domain.

Here are my questions to see if I should proceed:1) Folder permissions:If we move all our files to the Ubuntu server how do we set folder permissions and will we see the active directory accounts when we do this?2) Skipping ubuntu accounts: I know the domain and ads allow you to skip creating ubuntu accounts, right? If not, how do you keep the passwords synchronized?3) Easiest way? Is there a very easy way to pull this off that I've missed? My goal is to eliminate the Windows based file servers while ensuring the admin part of it is as easy as possible. To date I've been able to get the sharing to work with an ubuntu account mirroring the active directory account. I've been able to get Samba to talk to the pdc, but not successfully through domain security. ADS security was a complete cluster with winbindd

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Configuration - File Transfers Between The Machines Are Extremely Slow

Nov 1, 2010

1. When I'm not logged into the server, only the shares are visible on my Windows computer. Clicking on the share folder displays an error message. As soon as I log in at the server, the files within the shares become accessible on the Windows box.

2. File transfers between the machines are extremely slow. Watching the system monitor, there's a brief burst of network activity followed by 10-30 seconds of nothing...on a gigabit network, the effective transfer rate is ~120kbs. There's no other network activity going on that would account for this behavior.

Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring Samba To Access A NAS?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm having problems in accessing a storage device (NAS 200 Linksys) in a network via Ubuntu. I think the problem is with the configuration of Samba.

On my computer the login and password are the same in Ubuntu (9.04), samba and Win XP.

Under windows I view the device in the network and, when I click on its icon, a window opens with the directories that have access.

Under Ubuntu, I can see all the computers in my workgroup and the device. However when I click on its icon only a blank window is opened.

I share printers without problems.

In my settings for the samba security = user.

Does anyone know if there is any configuration that allows access to the NAS?

Ubuntu :: Configuring 9.10 As Client To Use Samba/LDAP Server For User Authentication?

how to make a new Ubuntu 9.10 box use our LDAP/Samba server for user authentication. Our Red Hat and Windows machines all use it just fine. Fedora :: Configuring Directory Server 389 Samba LDAP Tools

Feb 5, 2010

I've been busy with configuring Samba with the 389-Directory Server (former Fedora Directory Server) for the past weeks and I almost have everything working. The last thing (I hope) that I haven working are the smbldap-tools which I'd like to use for adding computers and users to the domain. The part where I'm stuck is with the security certificates. I don know how to get the client certificates out of my installation.

My smbldap.conf file contains this:
Code:
# $Source: $
# $Id: smbldap.conf,v 1.18 2005/05/27 14:28:47 jtournier Exp $
#
# smbldap-tools.conf : Q & D configuration file for smbldap-tools
# Purpose :
# . be the configuration file for all smbldap-tools scripts .....

I used the setupssl2.sh script to setup ssl for my 389-ds, which seemed to have worked fine. I however simply have no clou how to get client certificates out of this.
