Ubuntu :: Sending Large Folders Over Internet

Nov 20, 2010

Does anyone know of a Ubuntu compatible free software that will enable me to send Music folders via the internet. I know of Windows software but need a Ubuntu equivalent. I have a family Music CD that I need to send to my daughter as soon as possible - the mail can take an age.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

Security :: Detect Infected PC In LAN (Sending Packets To Internet)

In my network I have 25 workstations and some serves. Everything working in local LAN with firewall. The problem is that on one machine (I dont know which one) is installed software which sending data to the internet. Actually I dont know what it is. Last time as I remember was trojan which can create new network interfaces in windows and send some data to the internet. The half speed of my network connection is used by this infected machine. How can I detect which machine it is? How can I listen/capture some traffic and analyze from which machine I have more connections.

Please take a look on this time. Instead of 141-150ms should be 4-5ms.

Ubuntu :: Internet Conection - Transfer Rate - When Active - Is About 149b/s Receiving - And About 70b/s Sending

Apr 6, 2011

I checked task manager the other day and I discovered that on the network history monitor some bits and bites were transfered in a repeating pattern (like a beacon). The transfer rate (when active) is about 149b/s receiving. And about 70b/s sending. What is this?

No Internet-related program was running from my part...In an attempt to pinpoint what was causing this, I occidentally removed the tools located left and right on the time and date. I've rebooted since but still no tools. The 0/I button is also gone.

I'm looking to set up some kind of a server so my friends can access my music folder. I've managed to set it up so that users on my LAN can do this, but I can't figure out how to make this available on the internet. Is there an easy way to do this? how to set up an FTP server, but none of these tell me how to configure my router, or what IP address I will need to access the folder from the internet.

Ubuntu :: Hiding Folders Inside Of Shared Folders?

I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

Ubuntu :: Using Large LCD As TV And Setting GDM Resolution?

Oct 4, 2010

I am trying to use a large LCD TV as a monitor for movies, etc. I have the user set up and working. But, I'm struggling with GDM. I rather miss the days where a few cryptic settings in XORG.conf file made everything work correctly.

I added some lines to /etc/gdm/Init/Default and /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default. In both cases I added:
xrandr -newmode "1360x768_60.00"
xrandr -addmode VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"
xrander -output VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"

The next line is original and is
/sbin/initctl -q emit login . . . . . .

I'm not sure if I'm not adding the xrandr info to the right files/locations or if my xrandr stuff is wrong. For the user, I just logged in via VNC and changed the resolution. That part was easy.

Ubuntu :: Why Are Mac Programs Always Really Large And Heavy

May 26, 2011

It always seems to me that Mac programs use far more resources compared to gnu/linux and windows. for example the mac version of Firefox is 27MBs while the windows version is only 12. Also system requirements for programs often require far more ram for mac than they do for linux of windows. Is this just because they are poorly written? obviously, the mac version of firefox is just as good as the windows version. but if it's heavier, and does the same stuff, then it's worse, right? This probably has something to do with stupid formatting stuff.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 GDM Resolution Is Too Large

When I boot up my 10.4 laptop I find that the resolution of the login screen is too large. About 50 percent of the time, the portion of the screen where I am to type in the password is off the screen and I am forced to reboot. The other 50% of the time I "get lucky" and have the useful portion of screen space available. Once I do login the screen works fine. How do I control GDM resolution behavior? In case it matters, the laptop is Acer Travelmate 6493.

Ubuntu :: Postfix Not Sending Emails?

Jan 18, 2010

i'm not a techie but have tried my best to solve the issue without success. I have a static IP from local ISP and my computer is configured with 192.168.1.2 (LAN IP).

I have installed ubuntu server 9.04 and want to send emails from my server for which I've configured postfix. But I dont know what to do next.

My questions are:

1. Do i need to install DNS server for using postfix? If not, what should I install to send emails from this server?

2. Do I need to forward any particular port in my router?

3. If I dont have a fully qualified domain, what are the configurations I need to do to send emails?

Ubuntu :: Copying A Large File From The Network?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to copy a file from a network resource on my Local Area Network, which is about 4.5 GB. I copy this file through GNOME copying utilities by first going to Places --> Network and then selecting the Windows Share on another computer on my network. I open it and start copying the file to my FAT32 drive by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. It copies well up-to 4 GB and then it hangs.

After trying it almost half a dozen times I got really annoyed and left it hung and went to bed. Next morning when I checked a message box saying "file too large to write" has appeared.

I am very annoyed. I desperately need that file. It's an ISO image and it is not damaged at all, it copies well to any windows system. Also, I have sufficient space on the drive in which I am trying to copy that file.

Ubuntu :: Bzip2 Compressed File Too Large

Feb 26, 2010

I have been having a recurring problem backing up my filesystem with tar, using bzip2 compression. Once the file reached a size of 4Gb, an error message appeared saying that the file was too large (I closed the terminal so do not have the exact message. Is there a way to retrieve it?). I was under the impression that bzip2 can support pretty much any size of file. It's rather strange: I have backed up files of about 4.5Gb before without trouble.

At the same time, I have had this problem before, and it's definitely not a memory problem: I am backing up onto a 100G external hard drive.

That reminds me, in fact, (I hadn't thought of this) that one time I tried to move an archived backup of about 4.5Gb to an external (it may have been the same one) and it said that the file was too large. Could it be that there is a maximum size of file I can transfer to the external in one go? Before I forget, I have ubuntu Karmic and my bzip2 version is 1.0.5 (and tar 1.22, though maybe this is superfluous information?)
