Jan 1, 2010When i select a new tab in firefox, it seems to open extremely large, but you cannot drag it to be any smaller..What do i need to reinstall to fix this?

Jan 18, 2011I have a 58 mg PDF that needs to be sent to a person with Windows. I do not know what special software they have. I only know that I nust send them the file in a way that they can use it. I tried yousendit.com and it tells me I need to install their "yousendit express package". But apperantly it will not run on Linux.

Oct 14, 2010Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.
Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.

I have the laptop connected via wireless but it's possible to connect the two either directly with a CAT5e cable or through the router. I'm just wondering what the best way to do this would be.

Sep 11, 2011I have a few hundred images of 30000 x 10000 pixels in size. Each image has lots of text (rendered as pixels) on it. I'd like to translate all text to another language. I speak both languages, and it's fine for me to translate each phrase manually. I need an image editor which can open these images quickly (faster than Inkscape, which needs about 60 seconds to open such an image), lets me zoom and rotate by 90 degrees, lets me erase (i.e. change the color of a selected rectangle to solid white), lets me add text, and lets me save the file as quickly as possible. I'd like to minimize the time I have to wait for the software to load, render and save images. Which is the best program for that on Windows? On Linux?

I tried to tar each directory and the first came out to about 37gb and the second keeps failing (its bigger one would assume).

Feb 18, 2011how big and widespaced the fonts on Clementine playlist are and how good they look on the appmenu (where my mouse pointer is). This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.

Jan 21, 2011I'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.
When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.
I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.

Dec 15, 2010In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?

May 9, 2010I'm having a slight problem with firefox in ubuntu 10.04. I'm using my (lenovo ideapad y70) laptop with a VGA connected monitor (LED-LCD TV; Vizio), and for some reason when I maximize a window, the 'x' and scroll bar on the right side are cut off. I have the dual monitor situation set up with the resolutions on the recommend levels (1920*1080 and 1400*900) and I honestly have no idea what the problem is, because I've been using the exact same setup since Lucid Lynx was officially released and it worked fine.
Today I just turned it on after being gone for the weekend, and the window was like this. Doesn't quite make sense to me. The only I changed was perhaps downloaded the updates from the update manager... but I doubt that would affect anything. Oh also, another thing I should add would be that when I was gone I left the TV in my apartment and took the laptop, so perhaps switching from dual screens to single screen and back messed it up? Not sure. I would include error output, but there arent really any errors, I think its just some sort of problem with the resolution.
Ubuntu :: Simultaneous Opening Of Firefox Windows ?
Aug 14, 2010I am using the latest version of ubuntu(10.04 LTS) Desktop edition 32Bit. My problem is, after I open the firefox browser for first time after booting, a chain of new firefox windows start opening one after the another. In a matter of few minutes, there are like 15-20 instances of the browser opened.
I reinstalled the OS, but it is happening again and again. Is there some flaw in OS, something related to OS not compatible with my computer or some problem with the keyboard where some key(combination) is in a "press" mode (however, I dont see that happening on Laptop, the keyboard looks fine, plus Windows XP is working just fine).
This problem is forcing me to spend a larger time on Windows (which is bit cringy, after you get used to Ubuntu!).
Specs: 1Gb Ram, Centrino Duo, 1.88 GHz

Aug 15, 2010After installing Ubuntu, it didnt automount my windows partitions on startup. I always had to click them in PLACES to mount them. I also had firefox profile folder same as in windows. So every time i started Ubuntu, i clicked on my windows parititon in PLACES and than firefox. It wasnt ideal but it worked. but i wanted them to automount so i edited fstab to be like this

Oct 1, 2010Two very simmilar laptops connected to the same WiFi router loading the same web pages. Firefox on Windows does that for 3 secons, while Firefox on Ubuntu needs 1-3 minutes to load the same page. What could be the reason for this? Any idea how to fix it? The laptop with Ubuntu runs 10.04 LTS (lucid), Firefox is 3.6.10 and on any other WiFi network it loads the web pages really faster but why is much slower than Windows now?When testing the speed on URL...Ubuntu loads times faster than Windows. The WiFi router has been reseted. Firefox has been started in -safe-mode, both didn't help.

Nov 13, 2010Is it possible to run Windows Firefox plugins/addons under Wine while the browser itself is the native Linux Firefox? For example; I am considering taking the introduction to Linux Open University course, but the course requirements state the need to use Shockwave Player. Obviously Shockwave Player is not available for Linux but it is (allegedly) possible to run both the Windows version of Firefox and Shockwave Player under Wine. I would prefer to run the Linux version of Firefox natively with only the Windows version of Shockwave Player using Wine.
Is there some method to achieve this ? Maybe there is some kind of wrapper application, something like the one used for Windows wireless networking drivers (NDISWrapper) or maybe there are instructions on how to embed the Shockwave Player using Wine in Firefox somewhere. Obviously my needs are quite specific but I am sure that being able to use Windows browser plugins/addons under the Linux version of Firefox would be of interest to at least a few other people.

Mar 30, 2011Downloaded FF4. For my purposes it doesn't seem that much different from FF3. I was able to watch videos on a news website that I hadn't been able to with FF3! On FF3, with the windows theme I have, there is a nice blue tint on the top of the tab, but not on FF4.

I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.

Jan 28, 2010Truthfully, I don't know if this is a Firefox bug or not, but I've only experienced this on my Fedora machine.
There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, and it's happened in trusted sites when clicking on various links (like this one for instance), but Firefox will suddenly go mad and just start opening window after window.
The only way I can get out of it is 'ps -ef' 'ing for the firefox process and killing it.
This has happened under both 10 and 12.

I needed that because some websites still believe there is only one operating system (for the most part those are government run sites). how to change the config in Firefox 4 to make it look as though it is running on a windows machine?
