Dec 26, 2010It seems I might be having an issue that's a non-issue. I am not able to stream/ connect to a stream using vlc.I've looked at a few walk-throughs; I follow the steps and as often as not I get no error messages but cannot connect to a stream.

In addition, I disabled pglcmd and forwarded port 8080 for my IP.

I have restarted the computer, restarted apache, etc and still nothing. When I first installed, phpmyadmin was inaccessible, so I ran some command in terminal which apparently created a symlink between phpmyadmin in the user/share dir to the /var/www dir, and curious if this is the problem. I have no clue how to remove this symlink if this is the case, and have phpmyadmin working now due to install using sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin.

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Connect To System Bus: Failed To Connect To Socket
May 29, 2010I tried to install vsftpd on my server and while the installation went fine, I can't run

As I the get error

restart: Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory Though I'm able to restart the service with
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.

May 5, 2010I tried posting this before and I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it worked, so if it did please forgive the double post.am very very new to centOS and linux in general. I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. However when I create a php page it's just blank.When I look at the apache error logs I get this: PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0
I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns

I'm sure that this isn't correct but like I said I don't know much about how to set permissions or who the owner needs to be. I've done alot of searching and seen similar posts, but no one seems to explain it clearly.

This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.

Feb 21, 2010I went to shut down a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, and about halfway through the little yellow/orange bar the screen went black and it said:
"xxx.xxxxxx hub 2.0: 1.0 connect-debounce failed port y disabled" (xxx.xxxxxx being a different number string each time, and y being a port number)
It gives me that message for 3, sometimes 4, ports--3 times (port 2, port 3, port 1, port 2, port 3, port 1, etc.). Once I got that while starting up. Near the end of that colored bar, it gave me the black screen, and then this big long list of stuff it was checking. When it got to starting Bluetooth, it started that connect-debounce thing for all the ports. Then there was some other stuff that disappeared faster than I could write it down. However, Ubuntu did a system check the next day, and that start up issue disappeared--at start up and shut down. A couple of days ago, it started the connect-debounce thing on shutdown again. Ubunutu did a system check, but it did not fix the shut down issue or get the USB mouse/items to work.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Connect Wirelessly - Driver Installation Failed
Jul 8, 2010I have an Compaq Mini 700 which has a busted hard drive. I'm trying to get Ubuntu onto a USB disc to use the internet. I have tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Desktop and neither will connect wirelessly. A wireless icon appears with an ! indicating a problem. When going into Hardware Drivers there are 2: Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver - neither are activated. Trying to activate the first results in an instant error: "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log". The second goes through the process of installing and results in an error. When trying to install anything it all results in some kind of error. How can I get the wireless card working? I believe it is a broadcom.

Ubuntu :: TeamViewer Installed - Skype P2P Connect Failed
Dec 22, 2010I installed teamviewer and immediately skype went offline. Upon logging in to skype I get the following error:
"skype p2p connect failed"
So I rebooted pc, router, performed the command: "rm -rf ~/.Skype" to no avail. Next I removed teamviewer and tried everything again & still the message persists. Skype was set to not use port 80 already, but if it won't log on then I can't get to full the options menu.

May 14, 2011Ok, so a few weeks back my 6 year old daughter wanted to scan a picture she had made for a school project, I hadn't used my AGFA snapscan e20 for years, Infact it had been in a box for more than 5 years.
anyhoo I thought I'd give it a go and with some doubt plugged it in. Much to my joy and my daughters joy it just worked, there was life in the old dog still So two or three weeks on after I've installed a kernel update as well as others on my daughters Dell Optiplex GX620 Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (2.6.32-30-generic #59-Ubuntu SMP), my multi operating system literate 6 year old has drawn another master piece and popped it in the scanner only to recive the following error from simple-scan
What I'd like to know is,
1, How do I remove the entry for the scanner in simple-scan (ahh the old reinstall never fails)
2, why am I getting nothing back from my tail
3,Why did it break in the first place?
4, how to fix it (if not with a reinstall)
Please help as I don't want to break the "My Dad can fix anything" illusion my daughter has just yet.

Jan 24, 2009I've been trying to get my palm TX to sync with kubuntu 8.10. Quickly after I place the palm on the cradle I get a warning msg that I've attached below. I did follow some directions at one point where it required me to install visor. It had sync'd a few times, but then it started giving me these errors. Eventually I tried to delete the device, etc.
The msg:
Failed to connect using device 'Cradle', on port 'usb:'.
Check your confirguration, as you requested new-style libusb
'usb:' syncing, but have the old-style 'visor' kernel module loaded.
You may need to select a 'ttyUSB...' device

Feb 6, 2010I've been using synergy on Ubuntu 9.04 and windows xp.Synergy 1.3.1 on both machines.My problem is that the server keeps cutting out. It seems to happen a lot when I watch flash videos on the server machine (ubuntu). This is what the server side looks like:

Mar 12, 2010I'm not completely new to ubuntu, I've been using it for about 6 months, my laptop, suddenly decided to no longer let me connect wirelessly, it was mid pidgin conversation, I couldn't even tick the box to enable wireless. So I read in one of these posts that one person had to reinstall their wireless driver to get it working again. so I uninstalled my driver (Broadcom STA) however when I went to activate it, all I get is the error message installation failed and to look for log "/var/log/jockey.log" and here I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about computers since I'm not sure where to look for the log and also what the log would mean.

Jun 24, 2010Im a composer and I loaded up on some excellent applications for music creation and notation- so excited..
I start with Rosegarden. Failed to connect to JACK audio server. Try my other applications, same problem.
Basically the JACK audio server just WILL NOT RUN (correctly). I can sudo it and press start, but still it wont "play with" the applications! Heres the error message from JACK (I also get related errors when I try to do ANYTHING involving music creation):

Mar 3, 2010I am running openSuse 11.2 on Acer Turion64 x2.
My wireless card is "Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)".
For some reason, networkmanager can not connect to network at all.
In NetworkManager log, it is showing "kernel: [ 28.002378] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready".
I try to find out why it can not connect to network by using knetworkmanager.
General :: Failed To Connect To Mail Server
Feb 1, 2010I was working recently on a perl program on our ftp server (box is running SuSE, I belive v9.3) designed to email a warning if the mountpoint to our backup machine could not be mounted. A couple of other programs, month-end critical, took me away from that for a while. I got back to it today, only to discover that I cannot even send the messages anymore (before, I could send, but I was having trouble interpreting the results I was sending).
The program is using MIME::Lite for its mailsending function. The actual error message I am receiving is

The line in question is the actual $msg->send command.
I have good reason to believe that the environment for this has changed; during the time I was working on other projects, our office phone setup was replaced and refined with an ethernet-connected setup installed by the company that provides our mailing services (and presumably network services in general, although I do not know this for a fact). I know that we were having email troubles with some of our month-end scripts after that, which required our main server's DNS values to be changed...but those errors were not the same as the one I am getting on this machine.
Is this simply going to be as easy as changing the DNS settings on our FTP box, and if not, where is the best place to start digging for more information?

Jul 21, 2010If your machine is connected to the Internet, you'll probably want to disallow ssh password authentication (which is advised but not mandatory). Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and change/add the following lines:

AllowUsers nx
Don't forget to restart the sshd daemon after making that change: service sshd restart I already have PasswordAuthentication yes in my file as I need it to login to the server through ssh. Do I just skip that line and only add AllowUsers nx mynxuser at the end? Also, I followed the rest of the manual and when I tried the client on Windows it failed: I put in a user and password to login but shouldn't it be using the key instead? I think the problem is related to the above due to:
