Ubuntu :: Why Are Mac Programs Always Really Large And Heavy

May 26, 2011

It always seems to me that Mac programs use far more resources compared to gnu/linux and windows. for example the mac version of Firefox is 27MBs while the windows version is only 12. Also system requirements for programs often require far more ram for mac than they do for linux of windows. Is this just because they are poorly written? obviously, the mac version of firefox is just as good as the windows version. but if it's heavier, and does the same stuff, then it's worse, right? This probably has something to do with stupid formatting stuff.

Ubuntu :: Fonts Are Just Too Large And Large

Feb 18, 2011

how big and widespaced the fonts on Clementine playlist are and how good they look on the appmenu (where my mouse pointer is). This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.

Ubuntu :: Heavy HDD Activity After Login?

Oct 31, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5530G. On a fresh install, the HDD is silent after logging in and the desktop is immediately ready for use. A few days and updates later, after every login, there's heavy HDD activity that lasts about 20/30 seconds and makes it almost impossible to perform any other task. The entire desktop is visible during said event.

Not a big issue, however it bothers me a little. I've observed this behavior since Ubuntu 9.10. Anyone else experiencing similar problem?

Ubuntu :: Shutting Off Under Heavy Network Use?

Jun 5, 2011

so I've scoured the web and I can't seem to find anyone else having this issue. The issue:

Whenever my box is heavily using the internet, it seems to just wimp out. It shuts off and reboots.

When it's happened:I first deduced the connection to the network connection when I was trying to set up the system. When I tried an upgrade after the first time I installed the system, it crashed, leaving me with broken packages and all kinds of mess. So I decided to start over, and since I then had the network set up, I used the install latest version feature in the installer. If failed again. I battled issue this a couple of times before I opted to do updates in chunks instead of all at once. Success. Then I tried to download an entire website. You see, I had bought the computer to use as a test server for work. I ran wget, I believe. After a lot of recursive downloading, it decided to take another unauthorized break.

Now, I've got a minecraft server running too. It's been working pretty nicely, until lately. I've got a cron job set up to backup the server files with dropbox. Bad, bad, bad. The computer started acting up again, shutting off and rebooting. I figured it was having a hard time uploading to dropbox while simultaneously serving up the game. I moved the cron job from hourly to daily, and haven't had issues all day. Great. Until late tonight. It did it again while we were playing. It's relentless. So I went through the whole process of assessing damage. Luckily no damage. Then I went ahead and ran the dropbox script that didn't get to run while I was performing diagnostics.

Ubuntu :: Why Is Desktop So Heavy - Ram Load From 275mb To 120mb

Mar 13, 2010

I installed openbox and pcman on my old desktop and was able take the desktop ram load from 275mb to 120mb. (openbox, pcman, kupfer, gnome-panel) I was so pleased with the increased headroom and performance that I wanted to do it on my macbook. Usually my macbook has as desktop ram load of about 350mb... which I find excessive as that is heavier than OS X. That's running gnome, nautilus, compiz, and gnome-do at startup.

I performed a similar procedure today to create the same setup on my laptop and... strangely, my ram usage on the desktop is still close to 300mb! I've brought up system monitor and added up the ram of all the processes it detected myself and it only added up to about 50mb. How is it that my desktop is still so heavy in a minimal environment?? (both machines are Karmic 9.10, by the way. The desktop is hardwired to the internet while my laptop uses Wicd)

Fedora :: Everything Hangs On Heavy Network I/O?

Oct 24, 2010

After first installing Fedora on my computer, I was having a problem with my programs hanging for about 10-20 seconds, and then starting working again. After a while I discovered that every time it happened, there where some disk activity, and when the disk activity stopped, the programs started working again. The problem also occurred, when I was copying large files. Then the programs would hang until the copy was finished. After some googling around I tried to change the scheduler for SDA from cfq ro deadline, which seemed to solve the problem.

However the problem still seems to occur, if I do something that requires heavy network activity. If I copy a large file from one computer to another or download something using Vuze, all programs becomes unusable until network activity stops again. have 2 computers, which both seems to have the same problem (AMD X2 3800+ and Intel Core I5 750). They are running Fedora 12 and 13 both 64 bit. Both are using Asus motherboards with onboard LAN

Ubuntu :: System Stutter Running Heavy Load Through Wine?

Oct 26, 2010

I have recently begun contributing to the Folding@Home distributed computing project. Due to oversights in the application's design and to process the most advantageous work units, I need to run this command line app through wine. The application is very CPU/RAM intensive, but it does not put much load on the hard drive. It is multi-threaded and uses up to 100% of all 6 cores in my machine. I run it with a "nice" level of 19 with hopes that it won't slow down my normal desktop use.

Here is the problem... when running this setup, my system will frequently freeze for a fraction of a second and then resume. With the more complicated work units, this can happen 1-2 times per minute. During the freeze, the mouse will stop moving, videos stop playing, music pauses, etc. The system is completely unresponsive. However, each instance only lasts for a very short time. Since this happens so often, my productivity is negatively impacted (and it's very annoying).

I previously ran the native Linux version of F@H without this problem, but that was also processing much less complicated calculations. I have tried with wine 1.2.1 and 1.3.5 with the same results. The application does not have problems running on Windows. It has been suggested that the current Linux CPU scheduler is to blame, but is there anything I can do to resolve this now or work around it?

Ubuntu :: System Would Use Futura's Heavy Weight Option Instead Of Bold

Feb 27, 2011

I use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.

Ubuntu :: Use Server To Compile And Run Heavy Things And Control It With Another Machine

Mar 20, 2011

Can I run/compile programs on my remote server and control it using LAN? How do I do it?

Long Version:

I have a spare computer here. It's rather powerful for my daily needs (Athlon X2 6000) and I want to set it as my HTPC/Server. Don't worry about HTPC, it got Digital Audio output and a Radeon HD3200 with HDMI out, outputs 1080p pretty well under Windows (I'll setup it for Ubuntu when I get everything straight). So, I thought "Well, I think it's going to be overkill to let such machine as a HTPC only. I'll use it as a server too!". So far so good, but I don't know anything about servers or such. I would like it, as a server, to compile huge programs and handle big compressions (I'm actually with a Celeron ULV 1.2GHz netbook for such tasks, takes ages). Also, it would be pretty nice if I could control the server with my netbook. Like, Start/Stop music/movies with my netbook, control the Boxee/XBMC (Media Players) with the netbook, and, if possible, control its mouse.

Btw, will Ubuntu 10.10 support Hardware Acceleration for ATI Radeon HD3200? Over Windows' DXVA it works OK.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Heavy Sound Lags After Kernel Update?

Jul 17, 2011

After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32 and then 2.6.32-33, my sound started to lag(the lag occurred on 2.6.32-32 and stayed to 2.6.32-33, but it worked perfectly ever before). Sound does work in itself, but frequently lags and pieces that were already played before will be played again, pretty much like an old vinyl that occasionally jumps or hangs. When I start to replay something, it does not put out anything for a second or two and then starts, when I stop it will keep playing for the exact same amount of time. So, sound is synced to videos(video replay works perfectly well and without the lag). Problem is definitely related to the sound drivers, not to replay software or any buggy file. It occurs with DVDs, Flash Videos in Firefox, music in gmusicbrowser, movie files with VLC, whatever you want. I never experienced such problems with any kernel before. Although I've seen many others posting similar problems, I cannot see any valid solution for myself.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I sure don't want to go to 10.10 for the second.

I reinstalled Alsa and Pulse, no joy. My sound card is recognized correctly by alsa and can be found in aplay -l. It's a generic onboard surround sound device, although I only use stereo channels.

Debian :: System Remains Sluggish After Heavy CPU Use

Jun 11, 2011

I have a problem with my Debian squeeze system. After I have run some CPU-intensive application for a while the system becomes sluggish. Ok, maybe one would expect that. But. The system remains sluggish even after that process has been killed and then top shows high cpu usage from unrelated processes and a high %sy percentage as well. I don't really know where to begin solving this problem except I've checked that this is specifically related to (at least) CPU use as opposed to heavy memory use or IO (by running an application with low mem/no io but high cpu use). I am running the latest standard kernel from squeeze, 2.6.32-5-686. Also, thing is, I remember having similar problems with other Linux distros before, where for example gzipping a large file would cause the same. I did not have similar problems on {Net,Open}BSD, so a hardware fault seems an unlikely reason to me.

General :: Big Cpu Usage But Top Shows No Heavy Use Process

May 6, 2011

I have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?

General :: Diagnosing Heavy Cpu System Usage?

Jul 26, 2011

I have been encountering lots of heavy system cpu usage. It is sporadic, last for about 10 minutes, and brings everything else to crawl (latency of even typing characters into an editor or a terminal is painfully slow). My computer is an i7 quad, and all 8 logical cores fire at near 100% during these periods. I can see the usage clearly with htop. The red bars in htop indicate system use (I have attached a screen shot for an example). However, as there is no process per se, I have no clue what is causing it.

It is something I have to fix as the computer becomes unusable periodically throughout the day.I One thing to add, I am using the computer as a ltsp server on ubuntu, attaching to it using two thin clients. There is always heavy ethernet traffic through the second ethernet card. I don't know if this is related. However, I do think all this problem began when I installed the ltsp and switched to using a thin client.

The problem is, many programs just crashes, after they started, or after a quit short while. Affected are Firefox, Thunderbird, Krusader, Amarok, Konsole, and many other programs. The second problem is, if I downloaded a bzip2 archive, it is corrupt. I downloaded many archives, from other mirrors, and all corrupt. I had installed, the Multilib-packages, thought they would be the reason for the problems, and installed the standard packages of glibc and gcc. No changes. Then I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.33.4, to 2.6.35.6. (Compiled it myself) Nothing better.

Fedora :: Heavy Software Raid I/o Causes System Lockup

May 9, 2011

Here is the scenario: I load hundreds of h264/ac3 video clips from my HD video camera onto a four disk software raid stripe under Fedora 14 running the 2.6.38.3-15.rc1.fc15.x86_64 kernel. I then run a python script I've written to do batch process transcoding on the clips so that I can then edit them in cinelerra. FWIW, the transcode command is: nice ffmpeg -i infile.MTS -y -deinterlace -s hd720 -r 29.97 -acodec pcm_s16be -ar 48000 -ac 2 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 2 out.mov. The python script batches these commands until they are all completed.

The system is capable of 16 concurrent threads and I set up 8 concurrent run queues to do the processing. Occasionally (about one in every 7 runs), the system will hard lockup during the batch. The X screens are still visible, but the mouse and keyboard are dead and the onscreen clocks freeze. The network io led still flashes but the hard disk io led is on solid at that point, leading me to theorize a kernel bug in the software raid handling. I am not able to remote log in and the system must be then hard rest with the reset button. After the reset there is no useful information in the system logs. this is a pretty uber SMP machine: two westmere quad core cpus, 24GB of ram and a four WD disk software stripe array running under the Intel ICH10 controller. I also have a RocketRaid controller installed but no disks are currently attached to it, and I disabled its bios in the setup. Additional disks under the ICH10 are an SSD system disk, and a sata insertion caddy that I usually have occupied with a disk I do backups to. So, all 6 channels on the ICH are usuallt occupied. General output from hdparm -i is:
