how do i make "picasa" the default program for viewing my photoes.im now using "google chrome" as my prefered browser, instead of firefox, much better imho,
I have this problem constantly and it tells me to install such and so a prog, but I do locate [prog] and it shows up in 80 places so it's obviously installed. I just have no clue how to attach the two or to set up anything in the ./config set up so it leaves me completely stuck. So what's the trick when it's already in there? Also..it says I just joined? in 2008.
I use ubuntu 10.10 Last night when I use my laptop I hangs and when I shut it down the last thing I see is there's a not responding app called at-spi register (or at-sys or something I don't really remember) and the next time I log in to my account there's only login sound heard and the wallpaper I set before, and the mouse cursor. There's nothing else. No nautilus, no panels, nothing. Nothing happened when I press alt-f2, ctrl alt L, etc. There's even nothing happened when I press the power button (unless if I press it a long time it will shut down). the only thing I can do (that I know) is press ctrl-alt f1 & ctrl-alt-f7 to change to tty. And only through tty and recovery mode I can access my account. I decide to create new account using adduser and I can login into the new account successfully. but then again in my new account I can't access all the data from my original account. and I can't use root or sudo command in my new account.
I've tried to reset gnome and nautilus using rm -rf but apparently nothing appeared but login sound, wallpaper (that change to default ubuntu maverick wallpaper), and a mouse cursor that can't do anything.
I'm trying to figure out how to operate a rather large Java program, 'prog'. If I go to its /bin/ dir and configure its setenv.sh and prog.sh to use local directories and my current user account. Then I try to run it via "./prog.sh start". Here are all the relevant bits of prog.sh:
[code]...
When I actually do ./prog.sh start, it starts. But I can't find it at all on the process list. Nor can I kill it manually, using the same command the shell script uses. But I can tell it's running, because if I do ./prog.sh stop, it stops (and some temporary files elsewhere clean themselves out).
[code]...
the process is running yet not in any way listed by the system. I can't find it in ps or /proc/, nor can I kill it. But the shell script can still stop it properly. So my question is, how can something like this happen? Is the process supremely hidden, actually unlisted, or am I just missing it in some fashion? I'm trying to figure out what makes this program tick.
Recently my beloved ubuntu setup died and I'm struggling to fix it.One day I turned it on and I received the following message:"Your screen graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly'Attempting to continue with the recommended lower graphics settings does not work and I am not sure where to go from here. Sometimes it will advance at the lower graphics setting until an error regarding the configuration defaults for the GNOME power manager that have apparently not been installed properly.I didn't change anything and my windoze partition works well. Running Lucid Lynx with nvidia graphics card and ndiswrapper.Other error messages are:(EE) [drm] failed to open device(EE) Failed to initialise GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)If I reinstall ubuntu will I lose all my programs and data?
A new directory (Desktop with uppercase D) appeared in my /home/mark dir and my icons disappeared. Upon further looking, I see there are 2 directory's in my home, one called desktop (all lower case,) the other is Desktop with uppercase D. I copied the stuff from desktop to Desktop and my icons are back. Where is this information kept so I can fix it back. I guess I need to tell Linux to use desktop, but I don't know where that is.
Anyways, to my question. Recently when I have been clicking right click an image of what I clicked has appeared that will not go away. I have an example here:Logging out helps until I right-click again.
About 2 weeks ago i installed ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded fresh network drivers. I ran autorun.sh, the module was compiled and installed, i could see it with lsmod. But after rebooting the old module appeared again, but no file for him were in modules directory because autorun.sh removed old module file. Some time passed and I figured out that it is initrd who is guilty. I couldn't check it because i already deleted ubuntu and installed Fedora 14 Beta. Today i tried to repeat my steps and installed new network module on Fedora. But when i rebooted and started again i was surprised - new module works instead my old one. Everything is fine So, my question, does Fedora use initrd? I saw some files in /boot that which are initrd files (as i think). Or may be not every fedora system uses initrd or something else?
I have received an ACER Aspire 7720 with Vista and I am trying to install F14. Really I installed it but, when restarting, there were some troubles: 1. Grub did not appeared. 2. Vista decided to loop on start and I could not boot it nor in fail safe mode.So I recovered Vista with an recovery disk, but now I only can start in Vista from HD.
Now I am using a f14 Live CD in order to apply some solutions I have read in the tags but the partitions of Fedora do not appear with fdisk, although I can access them from Live.
[URL] I used testdisk as the replies suggested recovered all my linux partition including my 2 linux distros and boot partitions, but now my windows 7 appeared as unallocated space, which is very ironic, I fixed my last problem only to have situation reversed. I recovered the mbr record from my boot partition, but because that record dose not include the ntfs partition, that partition appears as unallocated space. so how can I make that ntfs partition recognized again so I can update grub and boot to my windows 7 partition? Please help me out, I have had this partition stuck in my computer for a while doing nothing...
Being used to KDE (Suse), I really like the ability to click on the "start" menu, and being able to immediately type in to search for a program/file/link, which then brings up the options and you can just click on one.Is there any way to do a similar thing in Ubuntu/Gnome?

Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.
I have completed building gazebo, and everything was done successfully according to the following link [URL]... bot_Simulation , but when I tried to invoke gazebo using the command "gazebo /usr/local/share/gazebo/worlds/pioneer2dx.world" it returns the following error
I recently lost the default panel from the top task bar, a message appeared on boot up saying a config file was missing or couldn't load - or something to that effect. I didn't realise to what it was referring until the computer (an Acer One) completed its start up and I could see the desktop
How can I restore the panel? (graphic from my other Ubuntu laptop attached showing the default panel appearance)
I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.
Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.
Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.
