Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy firefox icon in ubuntu appear as a small pinned white paper. But when I click on it, it launches the browser without any problems. It was like that in Lucid Lynx too. But My karmic had the proper firefox logo. Can anyone help me in getting my icon back?
Some one had told me that it would be there on the following directory.
/usr/share/icons/balanzan/scalable/apps and select firefox.png.
But I couldn't find it there.
There was no balanzan folder inside icons. I could find scalable folder inside default.kde4 folder.
/usr/share/icons/default.kde4/scalable/apps/
But there no firefox.png.
I've been using Fedora 13 for a few months now on my desktop and since ethernet is not a choice I needed to use a wlan adapter. I did a little research and ended up using a Linksys WUSB54G ver. 4 which worked great (plug and play, no ndiswrapper or any other configuration required) on my wireless g network, using WEP protection. About a week ago I started looking for methods of upgrading my system because. well I just like being somewhat current.
Anyway I used a Fedora 14 Install DVD and used the upgrade option and it worked. All my settings (seem) to be exactly the same as my Fedora 13 settings were and the appearance and location of files etc. are all the same. Now, for some odd reason, to me at least, Fedora isn't showing a wlan icon in the upper right hand (by the way I'm using GNOME) corner like it used to and doesn't seem to have configured my wlan device correctly. I ran lsusb and it shows the device ID (13b1:000d) and the name (Linksys WUSB54G v4 802.11g Adapter [Ralink RT2500USB]) I'd just like to get my adapter working again like it did in 13. I have kernel version 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686.
I'm using Robolinux Cinnamon which is Debian 8.2 (fantasic OS btw). I usually use a blank, black wallpaper but the default color of the icon font is black. I googled this question for about an hour before I came here. How to change the icon font color on the desktop to white?

I have noticed that there are some tiny white scanlines over the screen in linux, is this something known? specific graphics cards? just an issue with my setup?
Its hard to explain but its even horizontal scanlines, like small white lines over the screen, like every 3 line... was wondering if its my geforce 8800 or what it is?
Firstly i was getting error 'grub resque: unknown filesystem'. then i reinstalled GRUB from the live cd, now when i try to boot the grub doesn't load but i get only white line that blinks.

View 2 Replies View RelatedToday brought some new updates. I did the updates and while not required I did a restart. Then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). It does not boot. I held down the power button to shutdown. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have re-installed Fedora 3 times, each time, after a little while of use, when I am botting it up, it loads up, and before the login screen appears, the screen just goes black, and I end up with just a black screen and a white line in the top left corner flashing, thus resulting in me not being able to log in. The exact same has happened a number of time
Could it be something I had installed? Also, whilst using it, on the third install, a few times a message appeared telling me there was a kernel error, could this be linked to the problem? I was running Fedora in GNOME, but I had KDE installed too.
Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE
I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CDs) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.
this is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable
What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.
Tonight for the first time I tried to use Linux (Ubuntu). I installed it on to a small 100gb external HDD that I had just laying around. I thought I could do this without impacting my internal hard drive. I thought I could run Windows 7 normally when it wasn't plugged in and chose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu when it was. I installed it correctly (or atleast I thought). It worked fine but I then noticed I could only boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7 when it was plugged in. Having a laptop and going everywhere with it I could not tolerate it. When I tried to boot the system without the External HDD plugged in I would always get a "GRUB Rescue-No such Device" error and a white command line.
Confused I looked up how to uninstall Ubuntu, I got a windows recovery disc and deleted the partion off the External HDD. I then changed the BIOS settings so the CD would be booted first, well for whatever reason I get the same GRUB Error. It seems like I cannot boot into any CD Rom. Neither a recovery disc nor a Live CD. I got so frustrated I tried to system restore but it appears like the key command for that is also not working. I can't boot into anything and I'm stuck with the same Grub error. Im so confused and frustrated...I'm thinking about taking It to a pro and paying them to get it fixed or just calling it quits. I have no idea what I can do if Ibcan't boot from any CDs or any OSs.
I am looking for a way to (via bash script) set a custom directory icon for a number of directories. All of these directories contain a "cover.jpg" image. I can accomplish this manually by right clicking the directory > select "Properties > click the directory icon button > select the "cover.jpg" image. I am just looking for the way to do this in the terminal to save time, as the music collection is quite large.

i have xterminus installed. i also have a white block over the first letter in my username and when i begin typing, the 'block-type cursor' just leaves full white spaces behind and i cannot read my text at all. even when i delete back over the white spaces, they stay whited out.
I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I use ubuntu 10.10 Last night when I use my laptop I hangs and when I shut it down the last thing I see is there's a not responding app called at-spi register (or at-sys or something I don't really remember) and the next time I log in to my account there's only login sound heard and the wallpaper I set before, and the mouse cursor. There's nothing else. No nautilus, no panels, nothing. Nothing happened when I press alt-f2, ctrl alt L, etc. There's even nothing happened when I press the power button (unless if I press it a long time it will shut down). the only thing I can do (that I know) is press ctrl-alt f1 & ctrl-alt-f7 to change to tty. And only through tty and recovery mode I can access my account. I decide to create new account using adduser and I can login into the new account successfully. but then again in my new account I can't access all the data from my original account. and I can't use root or sudo command in my new account.
I've tried to reset gnome and nautilus using rm -rf but apparently nothing appeared but login sound, wallpaper (that change to default ubuntu maverick wallpaper), and a mouse cursor that can't do anything.
i dont have floppy drive. i was shocked when i saw that i have.it started when i installed ubuntu and kubuntu..it also appears n my Windows 7 OS.

A new directory (Desktop with uppercase D) appeared in my /home/mark dir and my icons disappeared. Upon further looking, I see there are 2 directory's in my home, one called desktop (all lower case,) the other is Desktop with uppercase D. I copied the stuff from desktop to Desktop and my icons are back. Where is this information kept so I can fix it back. I guess I need to tell Linux to use desktop, but I don't know where that is.
