I am browsing or chatting with someone or doing whatever, and the screen will randomly go black and the sound will be cut off as well. The computer doesn't shut off, it's not in Suspend mode. All processes are still running when this happens. And it doesn't come back.
View 1 RepliesI have just installed 10.04 x86 for my mom and while she is using it (tyrannically just browsing facebook/email/flash games) the screen randomly goes blank then back to normal again. This symptom generally worsens after a few minutes until it is unusable. Specs are as follows:
Athlon X2 5200+
3GB RAM
ATi 2400pro 256MB (using the standard out of the box drivers)
Also running compiz and emerald so that I was able to make the desktop look like OS X.
I am running 9.10 on a HP Compaq. Every few days X will die. The screen goes blank and will not display anything. I have to SSH in, but even trying various commands like gdm restart does not help. I eventually have to reboot the box. Below is a snippet (hopefully not too large) of dmesg:

i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .
I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

when I restart my computer I have no sound what so ever, the volume icon is just 3 dashes, and if I try to shutdown it brings me to the login screen, with no way to shut down except for holding down the power button.I'm using an Acer Aspire 4530.I didn't have this problem with Ubuntu 9.10.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt has to be an update or something that cause this. I've done nothing differently from the other days I use this laptop. I have to keep relogging every now and then because the sound stopped working. I can turn the volume up but pidginrhythmbox, nothing makes noise anymore. it's random...it just started happening today and this is the second time the music went out. anyone have any idea of how to stop this from happening in the future?

Problem 1 is an 18 month old "legacy" ATI card, which refuses to be fixed.
Problem 2 (I suspect) is more solvable.
When listening to music, (either from ..... or rhythmbox) after an indeterminate period of time, (it varies substantially from around 5 mins - 1 hour) the sound cuts out without warning. Videos continue to play, but in silence. This silence affects the browser as a whole (chromium). A workaround for this has been to simply restart the program, but this is becoming quite annoying. i upgraded to 10.10 several days ago. this is the second time i've had this problem since then, but the first time it was just a vlc problem, solved by restarting that program. now it's affecting vlc, audacious (tested to see if midis were affected, too, which they are), chrome, and firefox, and not just flash -- i tried the .ogg file embedded in this page, under "lyrics," and it had the same problem. and while typing this, i've heard system tones similarly afflicted. it wasn't happening earlier today, and i can't think of what might have caused it.
like the topic says, the problem is that the sound in all these environments has become what i can only describe as "robotic." like it's extremely compressed. evil r2-d2. it's not entirely divorced from what's supposed to be heard, because i've tried various videos videos with music and the rhythm is distinctly audible. in general, it's loud when it should be loud and quiet when it should be quiet.
sometimes the melody is distinguishable, too; it works best if there aren't many different sounds supposed to be audible. i can make out the melody in that "waltzing matilda" .ogg, for instance, and "tsubasa wo kudasai" isn't too bad -- i can actually make out the lyrics and the piano melody at the beginning (though i'm sure the k-on! version would sound much worse). the bass still translates into the same loud, robotic, constant-pitch sounds. (no, i'm not sure what note i keep hearing. middle c, maybe?) "wakko's america" has a lot of its vowels and consonants recognizable as well, probably because of its relative simplicity.
"bohemian rhapsody" is more problematic, but i can still make out the lyrics in the first 15 seconds or so, though they're still at that constant pitch. this, though? i can barely make out what some of the trumpets are supposed to be playing. this mario paint composer video is the closest to normal of all the ones i've checked, though it's still scratchy and all the "hearts" play that same bass note.
Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed kubuntu over ubuntu (both 9.10) this morning. in the past have had problems with suspending my laptop on ubuntu, so i tried on my new kubuntu. it entered suspension, but when i came back, all i saw was the login screen and the mouse. But nothing worked. It was just frozen. So i did a forced shutdown (held the power button down till it cut off). When i started it up again, there was no audio, no startup jingle. I restarted about 3 times.Here is the output of lspci:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 up-to-date in my laptop HP Pavilion dv4-1290br.My sound seems to randomly get muted, after a few hours the laptop is on. I've checked the volumes, I've compiled and installed the very latest ALSA driver, tested it trying to play music and changing the volume in hardware and software. Nothing works. The sound simply gets muted until I reboot.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe day started as usual until I got the very bright idea to install Ubuntu. A new OS along side W7, that sounded great. I checked some guides on the Internet, it was all very straight forward. Install it and Grub will show you the OS:es when you boot up. I installed Ubuntu, rebooted. After the BIOS messages the screen goes blank and my screen on-button begins to blink, as if trying to find a signal, I press enter, it reboots instantly. After BIOS messages I get to a screen that says "GRUB error: uknown filesystem grub rescue>"
I've looked through everything here and nothing works. I've tried to fix the mbr-thingy using Windows Repair and even though it says "one partition was updated with new boot-thingy" when I reboot, I get into that very same grub rescue. I think my setup has something to do with it. I run RAID0 (2x360Gb hard drives), first having C: at 50Gb and then the rest as F: for programs and such. What I did was that I shrunk the F: part and then used that as partition for Ubuntu. Also please have a look at these screenshots, my partitiontables and such seems completely wacky to the raid: Where should the boot-loader go? I'm very, very new at this. I've had Ubuntu Netbook remix on my netbook for a time but still treat me as an utter beginner.
I'm trying to test out using xubuntu 10.04 on my one computer and keep getting a black/blank screen after selecting the 'try' menu option.Is there a way to fix this?I have tried some of settings via F6 with no luck.
FYI -The CD works fine as I have tested it on other machines.The version I am trying is xubuntu x86 (although I have tried ubuntu 10.04 x86 with similar results).I can Alt+Ctrl+F1 fine and get to the cmd prompt
I fixed this issue on 10.04, but just recently (1 hour ago) upgraded to 10.10 and am having the same issue. Machine boots fine, but the screen is blank for most of the boot, and plymouth is up for about a half second before I get to the login screen.I've tried searching the threads, but for the life of me I can't find the solution and can't remember what I did to fix it on Lucid.
View 4 Replies View Relatedlike any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

I have a gigabyte MB/rig connected to Svideo out on my TV. I have external PC speakers connected to my sound card. For some reason when I go to play video, streaming audio, or streaming video I get no sound. I go into alsamixer via CLI and all is unmuted. I reboot, sound is back. The next day I load boxee, no sound. It's not just boxee when I have no sound. If I close boxee and open vlc and stream online radio, I get no sound either. Reboot, sound is back. No external errors of hardware conflicts either.

I have been running 10.04 quite successfully, when I upgraded to 10.10, I have a problem with the newer kernels. If I let it boot into the latest one 2.6.35-23, I get the Ubuntu 10.10 splash screen for a second then a blank screen, same with 2.6.35-22. I have to run with 32-25 to get it to load the gui.
I have an AMD Sempron 2800, 1.6GHz pc, but I'm not sure if it's running 64bit.
I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.
If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.
Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?
i have fedora 14 and sometimes the sound on my laptop stops to work.e.g. lately it happened when some system sound occured (pidgin message sound) and flash video started at almost the same time (videos)by lost sound i mean i can play music in amarok and i don't hear anything.no sound from flash or system sounds. aplay or paplay is not heard.i tried to log out and log in (restart the desktop session)i had to reboot to fix it.i tried to do "pulseaudio --kill" but that did not helped.any idea what should be restarted in this cases?

I have downloaded the ver10.04. I am running it on my laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 128MB graphics card. I am using the NVIDIA driver on the system. The screen flickers randomly after say every 1 min. By flickering I mean it just refreshes and goes blank for say 1ms during the refresh. It happens even more if I turn on CompViz option.

I got a lot IPv6 errors on the same log too, but those were caused by utorrent+too old wine. Didn't remember that upgrade deletes/disables extra-repos and I was running the stable wine (1.2.1) instead of the latest one (1.3.7). Upgrading wine solved the error from utorrent IPv6 connections.
So any ideas what I could do to fix these crashes? I'm not so much into clean re-install because of all the configuration I'll need to do then. I do have home on a separate partition but there's lots of software to install and configure.
Sometimes, out of the blue, my screen will suddenly change brightness. And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.
what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.
I have a fresh install of 64 bit Squeeze and for a few boots the sound worked great using my motherboards onboard intel audio not the creative soundblaster pci card I also have.
But now sometimes I boot up and get no sound, other times I get sound. I cannot find out why.

Since I started to use Suse 11.3, I've been having problems with my sound card. It starts normally and I can use it without further problems, until it randomly stops working. I don't know what causes it to stop working, it just does. Then, if I go to YaST>Hardware>Sound (it shows I have a 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller), press edit then reset, it works again!
I've been doing this for like 4 months, but I'm growing tired of doing it and not being able to just sit back and enjoy music on the amarok. I don't know what should I report, so that's why I only say the sound card identification.
I set login automatically in the login screen in the systems menu. but on after every boot it shows the login screen many times even after a correct login, and sometimes it doesn't show. I already updated my system so what should I do so that no more login screens after boot?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.
