Ubuntu :: Sound Randomly Stopped Working In Kubuntu 9.10?

Apr 4, 2010

I installed kubuntu over ubuntu (both 9.10) this morning. in the past have had problems with suspending my laptop on ubuntu, so i tried on my new kubuntu. it entered suspension, but when i came back, all i saw was the login screen and the mouse. But nothing worked. It was just frozen. So i did a forced shutdown (held the power button down till it cut off). When i started it up again, there was no audio, no startup jingle. I restarted about 3 times. Here is the output of lspci:

Code:
blakefebruary7@ubuntu:~$ lspci

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Connection Randomly Stopped Working?

Feb 6, 2010

My ubuntu karma desktop is plugged into a wired connection that goes through a router and into my cable modem.Everything was working fine like it had been foseveral months yesterday morningSomething happened by the end of the day that has screwed up my wired networking. I plugged my laptop into the same cable thats plugged into my ubuntu, and the cat5 cable is live. Also when I plug said cable into the ubuntu box, the ethernet lights come on, or atleast a solid green one. Meanwhile the network connections Icon continues to have a red X and a tooltip saying "No network connection".

Under network settings, there is only one wired network "Auto eth0", but it says "last used: never" which is strange since I've been using this for months. When I click edit the main settings are MTU automatic, ipv4 automatic DHCP, and ipv6 ignore.hat could the problem be? By chance did a karma update get released that broke the networking

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Randomly Stopped Working Until Rebooted?

Jun 17, 2010

Following is the specification of my user environment.

Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
Acer Aspire 5542
AMD Turion 2 X2 M500 (2.2 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)
ATI Radeon HD 4200
4GB DDR2 Memory
500 GB HDD 5400 RPM

Sometimes, both on Gnome MPlayer and Movie Player, videos clips won't play. I use mainly MKV file format and quite often, AVI. I have also installed Ubuntu-Restricted-Extras.

The players will literally not play. When I scroll, it goes through the video clip as if I'm fast forwarding when paused, and then it would still be frozen.

I only use Gnome MPlayer and it's been working fine until like two weeks ago, and when it happens it's also the same for the Movie Player. The problem stays there until I reboot my laptop.

It's random but quite often and it's now doing my head in. It would be nice if any of you gents could give me a good solution without getting involved another player, because I really like Gnome MPlayer.

Debian Configuration :: Ssh Randomly Stopped Working On Server?

Mar 15, 2010

I'm in somewhat of a sticky situation. ssh has just randomly stopped working on my server after a power failure. Everything else that doesn't rely on ssh is still working fine though. It can still receive mail and everything, just no ssh. Background on the server, running debian etch on a PPC machine.ssh is (supposed to be) running on port 2000. Even if I am physically logged into the machine I can't log in with ssh -p 2000 user@127.0.0.1.
I can ssh to and from any other machine on my network (the server can even ssh into another machine). So it isn't my network causing issues. It seems like the port 2000 is completely closed, if nmap the server's IP address I get PORT    STATE SERVICE

25/tcp  open  smtp
80/tcp  open  http
110/tcp open  pop3

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Connexant / NVidia Audio Just Randomly Stopped Working?

Mar 18, 2011

My Compaq Presario F739WM laptop has a Connexant HD Audio/NVidia MCP51 (reported by lspci) sound card.Ubuntu has always supported the card with no problem except the random popping noise but then I found a work around for that. Now for some reason, when I first turn on my computer and at login screen I can hear Ubuntu noises, yet seems once I login, no more sound or sometimes the successfully logged in sound.

The only changes that I have since the sound worked, was I installed pulseaudio but that caused no problems with that. The other change was a few kernel upgrades and other packages through normal update manager.I have checked that snd_hda_intel driver was loaded in the kernel and in alsa, all seems well.Pulse detects audio output in it's meter.I also tested the sound card to make sure it wasn't bad, in Windows 7 (dual boot) and it wokrs perfectly.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Sound Stopped Working, IEC958 Light Turns On Instead Of Sound Playing?

Jan 30, 2011

The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

Ubuntu :: Sound Just Randomly Stops Working?

May 26, 2010

It has to be an update or something that cause this. I've done nothing differently from the other days I use this laptop. I have to keep relogging every now and then because the sound stopped working. I can turn the volume up but pidginrhythmbox, nothing makes noise anymore. it's random...it just started happening today and this is the second time the music went out. anyone have any idea of how to stop this from happening in the future?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sound Stopped Working

Aug 2, 2010

Last night I was trying to get my printer working, and when I rebooted, I lost networking and sound.I am currently booting on a live CD, and sound and networking are fine-- so it can't be a hardware issue (obviously). I must have inadvertently broken something, but I can't figure it out.I have tried restarting networking, but it doesn't respond-- it says stop/waiting or something like that.I can't access the sound preferences-- it says waiting for sound to respond (or something like that).

When I reboot, sometimes I see a terminal window with the same line scrolling very, very quickly-- something about waiting for USB. Additionally, the system is very slow to respond-- clicking a menu item can take a long time for it to appear, etc. What could have occurred, and how might I troubleshoot it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Stopped Working In 11.04?

May 2, 2011

in 10.10 my internal audio and my external usb 5.1 soundcard worked fine, and everything was still ok after i upgraded to 11.04. i then tried to install an equaliser called "alsaequal" which required the alsa-driver-1.0.24 package, which i compiled ok. now i've lost all sound and can only see dummy output listed in sound preferences, and no hardware is detected.

sudo aplay -l doesn't detect anything either! i've folled all the steps on the sticky thread in multimedia, i tried purging and reinstalling all the alsa packages which didnt work, and then tried compilling alsa source packages, which wound up with errors. i was following this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1725874 which suggested running the alsa-info.sh script. i ran this and uploaded the output here:961380d1e9d23fi dont really understand any of this, but it seems to have detected my internal pci card but not my usb card.any help would be really appreciated after the hours spend fruitlessly trawling through these forums

Jan 19, 2010

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing. The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card Stopped Working?

When I first installed Ubuntu, my sound card was working properly after I made the necessary changes (system>preferences>sound), but after a few days it just stopped working and the sound from the motherboard is only working.

I reinstalled Ubuntu to my computer a few days ago, and my sound card was working again, but once again, it stopped working after a few days. How can I fix this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Suddenly Just Stopped Working ?

Jan 5, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu and my sound was working fine and then suddenly it just stopped working.

It does however, have odd spells where its working (for like 2 minutes) but those spells are few and far between. So basically the sound is not working.

When it isn't working my speaker seem to be making these hissing/screeching noises.

I've tried looking up on Google on how to fix it, i.e. running terminals, etc. but still haven't come round to fixing it. Could someone explain to me how to fix the sound please?

And no, the speakers aren't on mute. I checked volume control and everything is full.

Summary:
Laptop: Acer
OS: Ubuntu 9.something
Sound card: hda-intel
Problem: Sound not working

Ubuntu :: Sound Stopped Working After Upgraded Wine To 1.3.20

May 17, 2011

I ended up upgrading my wine version to 1.3.20 before it was released to the PPA repos. I downloaded it via git, compiled & installed, but now it did not detect my drivers anymore. It even warned me when i ./configure'd it, but I didn't listen. I tried, also, remove purge all wine packages I own and reinstall them from Ubuntu, but the dud 1.3.20 version is still installed. Is there a way to bring the sound back? Or, is there a way to revert this installation and make me able to install 1.3.19 back?

The following message appears when I access the "Audio" tab @ winecfg:

Code:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Speakers Stopped Working - Sound Not Functional

Sep 5, 2010

I've suddenly developed "no sound" at all- I use Logitech USB speakers and have been doing fine until this weekend when they simply won't play any longer. I searched and followed a bunch of different troubleshooting to no avail. I am running 9.10 with all the latest updates. I ran apt-get update and upgraded following this to be sure while doing this troubleshooting.

I went ahead and ran the also information script and the output is here: [URL]

The speaker lights are on so there is power getting there. I re-set the sound preferences to use the usb as output device and cranked the volume up all the way. This preference does not seem to stay between reboots or even when checking while troubleshooting this problem.

Hardware :: Sound Card Or GStreamer Stopped Working?

On startup, I click on the volume control (speaker-with-x) icon in the tray, and the error message in the attachment shows up. (That message only appears once per session, subsequent clicks just say "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.") Synaptic shows a broad range of said plugins installed (everything from Pidgin to good/bad/ugly), I mark them all for reinstallation, but nothing. I have no sound from any program, and whenI go to Control Center | Sound, there are no options down in the "Device" pull-down.Recenthanges to system: installed and later uninstalled VLC for i386, however sound continued to work for at least one or two sessions.
