when I restart my computer I have no sound what so ever, the volume icon is just 3 dashes, and if I try to shutdown it brings me to the login screen, with no way to shut down except for holding down the power button.I'm using an Acer Aspire 4530.I didn't have this problem with Ubuntu 9.10.

Ubuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

2 times now our server has randomly shut down. Completely powered off as if the power cable was pulled or something. Both around the same time. 7:30ish. Once was on Friday June 5th, then last night, Wednesday June 10th.

I have just installed Lucid i386 on an intel Core2Duo. Everything seems to be OK but about a third of the times I boot the system the following happen:
1) aplay -l reports no soundcards found and therefore I have no sound whatsoever
2) I cannot mount any USB Flash drives or DVD discs and I keep getting "Not authorized" error messages plugging them in.
3) The system won't reboot/shutdown by the gnome applet. Instead, it will drop back to the login screen asking my login. Furthermore, it won't even shutdown from there! Only a poweroff or reboot from command line can work.
4) The gnome applet "Indicator applet session" only shows "Log out, Restart, Shutdown". Suspend and Hibernate options are missing.
Furthermore, it seems that I am the only one who has these issues. My sound card is an onboard HDA Intel although this seems to be that something else dies taking some major subsystems down with it. Any ideas?

It has to be an update or something that cause this. I've done nothing differently from the other days I use this laptop. I have to keep relogging every now and then because the sound stopped working. I can turn the volume up but pidginrhythmbox, nothing makes noise anymore. it's random...it just started happening today and this is the second time the music went out. anyone have any idea of how to stop this from happening in the future?

Problem 1 is an 18 month old "legacy" ATI card, which refuses to be fixed.
Problem 2 (I suspect) is more solvable.
When listening to music, (either from ..... or rhythmbox) after an indeterminate period of time, (it varies substantially from around 5 mins - 1 hour) the sound cuts out without warning. Videos continue to play, but in silence. This silence affects the browser as a whole (chromium). A workaround for this has been to simply restart the program, but this is becoming quite annoying. i upgraded to 10.10 several days ago. this is the second time i've had this problem since then, but the first time it was just a vlc problem, solved by restarting that program. now it's affecting vlc, audacious (tested to see if midis were affected, too, which they are), chrome, and firefox, and not just flash -- i tried the .ogg file embedded in this page, under "lyrics," and it had the same problem. and while typing this, i've heard system tones similarly afflicted. it wasn't happening earlier today, and i can't think of what might have caused it.
like the topic says, the problem is that the sound in all these environments has become what i can only describe as "robotic." like it's extremely compressed. evil r2-d2. it's not entirely divorced from what's supposed to be heard, because i've tried various videos videos with music and the rhythm is distinctly audible. in general, it's loud when it should be loud and quiet when it should be quiet.
sometimes the melody is distinguishable, too; it works best if there aren't many different sounds supposed to be audible. i can make out the melody in that "waltzing matilda" .ogg, for instance, and "tsubasa wo kudasai" isn't too bad -- i can actually make out the lyrics and the piano melody at the beginning (though i'm sure the k-on! version would sound much worse). the bass still translates into the same loud, robotic, constant-pitch sounds. (no, i'm not sure what note i keep hearing. middle c, maybe?) "wakko's america" has a lot of its vowels and consonants recognizable as well, probably because of its relative simplicity.
"bohemian rhapsody" is more problematic, but i can still make out the lyrics in the first 15 seconds or so, though they're still at that constant pitch. this, though? i can barely make out what some of the trumpets are supposed to be playing. this mario paint composer video is the closest to normal of all the ones i've checked, though it's still scratchy and all the "hearts" play that same bass note.
I installed kubuntu over ubuntu (both 9.10) this morning. in the past have had problems with suspending my laptop on ubuntu, so i tried on my new kubuntu. it entered suspension, but when i came back, all i saw was the login screen and the mouse. But nothing worked. It was just frozen. So i did a forced shutdown (held the power button down till it cut off). When i started it up again, there was no audio, no startup jingle. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 up-to-date in my laptop HP Pavilion dv4-1290br.My sound seems to randomly get muted, after a few hours the laptop is on. I've checked the volumes, I've compiled and installed the very latest ALSA driver, tested it trying to play music and changing the volume in hardware and software. Nothing works. The sound simply gets muted until I reboot.

For some reason when I go to play video, streaming audio, or streaming video I get no sound. I go into alsamixer via CLI and all is unmuted. I reboot, sound is back. The next day I load boxee, no sound. It's not just boxee when I have no sound. If I close boxee and open vlc and stream online radio, I get no sound either. Reboot, sound is back. No external errors of hardware conflicts either.

i have fedora 14 and sometimes the sound on my laptop stops to work.e.g. lately it happened when some system sound occured (pidgin message sound) and flash video started at almost the same time (videos)by lost sound i mean i can play music in amarok and i don't hear anything.no sound from flash or system sounds. aplay or paplay is not heard.i tried to log out and log in (restart the desktop session)i had to reboot to fix it.i tried to do "pulseaudio --kill" but that did not helped.any idea what should be restarted in this cases?

I have a fresh install of 64 bit Squeeze and for a few boots the sound worked great using my motherboards onboard intel audio not the creative soundblaster pci card I also have.
But now sometimes I boot up and get no sound, other times I get sound. I cannot find out why.

Since I started to use Suse 11.3, I've been having problems with my sound card. It starts normally and I can use it without further problems, until it randomly stops working. I don't know what causes it to stop working, it just does. Then, if I go to YaST>Hardware>Sound (it shows I have a 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller), press edit then reset, it works again!
I've been doing this for like 4 months, but I'm growing tired of doing it and not being able to just sit back and enjoy music on the amarok. I don't know what should I report, so that's why I only say the sound card identification.
i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .
Strange problems and I don't know if they are related. This is Ubuntu 10.4 32 bit on a Toshiba Qosmio x505-q875 laptop dual boot with Winblows 7. One drive bay is a 64GB SSD with windows, my root, usr, and swap partitions on it. The other is a 1TB drive with the home partition.
First Problem: After the Grub menu disappears (defaulting to Ubuntu) about 25% of the time nothing happens. No harddrive light blinking, no cursor, nothing. Everything just stops. I have to use the power button to reset it. Happens several times in a row occasionally. I've never had this happen with Windows.
Second Problem: Sometimes Ubuntu doesn't see the sound card at all. The speaker icon is grehyed out and when I go into sound preferences, it doesn't list any sound device at all. Rebooting fixes it. This happens maybe half the time.
Last Problem: This one happens when the sound doesn't work. When i go to shut down the system, the hibernate and suspend options are not in the shutdown menu, and when I do shut down, it only logs me off. Even at the log on screen, if I tell the system to shut down again, nothing happens. I can log back on it that means anything, but shutting down again has the same effect.
This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.
It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.

(All I get are several 'beeps' from the PC speaker.)When I run Mint from a live CD, I don't have this problem at all.(I'm quite new to Linux and completely new to asking questions here, so apologies in advance, if I've left out any vital info.!)
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some time now, my laptop makes a quick but loud buzz sound when I shutdown or restart it. Muting my sounds doesn't fix it. Before, it didn't do this. It just started one day and got worse till it happened everytime I shutdown or restart.
Going to preferences > sounds > changing sound theme to no sounds helped a bit and after doing this, it doesn't happen all the time anymore. This is quite disturbing especially when I'm in libraries. What worries me the most though is that it might affect my speaker.
I'm using Karmic btw.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.
Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.
I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.
I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it
