Ubuntu :: Lucid Returns To Log-in Screen Randomly
May 7, 2010
My desktop computer (Lucid) crashes randomly and returns to the log-in screen.
It does so when when there is no activity and the screen-saver is on.
I get messages like this:

This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

So this has been happening a lot lately. My Lucid desktop just randomly logs me off. I notice that when it happens my RAM is usually over 85% in use as cache. Is this normal? When I first turn on my PC cache is most of the time at about 15-20% but that is expected. I was thinking that maybe some program that runs in the background has a major memory leek, which I would expect in C. This never used to happen and one day it just started, it now does it about 5-6 times a week.

After upgrade to Lucid I have experienced intermittent wireless disruptions. The wireless just cuts out and reconnects. And I was hoping to continue or follow up on the same thread however with the released version.I tried replacing network manager with wicd and I tried the other driver options both without success.I'm currently using the Broadcom B43 driver, when I tried the Broadcom STA driver wireless would not work. I use the 64 bit OS, and this problem did not appear prior to the upgrade.

when I start playing some medium-intense game the computer just restarts randomly. I made a lot of search on it and even tested various things. I have been having this system for about a month and the problem appeared just one week ago.I am a big fan of "Spring: TA" and that's the easiest way to reproduce the problem, by playing that game(and the most annoying). The funny thing is that when I just start the game the gpu temperature raises very fast. If after some time the pc doesn't reboot on itself the temperature just gets lower and lower. I was suspicious that the problem had to do with temperature so I made some scripts and logged the temperatures in every instant time.

32 bit Lucid is hanging at random times for me. it always happens when there's some sort of full-screen overlay, like when waking from screensaver, or when using gksu (dims the screen). The machine will remain unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute, then becomes usable again, just with the desktop not refreshed. Nothing of interest in the logs when this happens. The last thing upgraded in the machine was the graphics card (now running a GTS 450). 3d apps work just fine, temps are just fine, and I have no reason to believe it's hardware.

10.10 starts absolutely fine and goes to login screen. I enter my password and then the screen goes blank and returns to the log in page.
I first suspected it was a problem with password recognition but if I enter a wrong password it flashes up with an error so it can't be that. Only started happening after a standard update last night.
Am now having to use my flatmates windows PC to send this message

I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

I just recently reinstalled 9.10 and everything I normally use with my workstation is working fine except for virtual terminals.
ctrl+alt+f1-f6 just returns with a blank screen.
ctrl+alt+f7 returns to gdm session
ctrl+alt+f8-f12 also yield no information.

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and I have this annoying issue. it does happen very often, but enough to be a problem (atleast once a day or more). While I'm browsing the web (not really doing much of anything else) the screen goes black with some text. I don't get enough time to read the text and I'm returned to the login screen. I'm completely logged off, my session isn't still there when I log back in

I have downloaded the ver10.04. I am running it on my laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 128MB graphics card. I am using the NVIDIA driver on the system. The screen flickers randomly after say every 1 min. By flickering I mean it just refreshes and goes blank for say 1ms during the refresh. It happens even more if I turn on CompViz option.

I am browsing or chatting with someone or doing whatever, and the screen will randomly go black and the sound will be cut off as well. The computer doesn't shut off, it's not in Suspend mode. All processes are still running when this happens. And it doesn't come back.

I have just installed 10.04 x86 for my mom and while she is using it (tyrannically just browsing facebook/email/flash games) the screen randomly goes blank then back to normal again. This symptom generally worsens after a few minutes until it is unusable. Specs are as follows:
Athlon X2 5200+
3GB RAM
ATi 2400pro 256MB (using the standard out of the box drivers)
Also running compiz and emerald so that I was able to make the desktop look like OS X.

I upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 (32bit), the upgrade process didn't go that well because first it didn't boot beyond GRUB. Solved this by unplugging my keyboard (my ubuntu is a server machine without keyboard or mouse, I like to use the desktop version through vnc). After that is booted to shell, which was not so nice either. This time it was the legendary nouveau driver which sorry for my language I will never install again (caused major problem twice already). Installed nvidia drivers and got a display for X this time and it booted nicely to login screen.
My problems have arised since the upgrade, the system will randomly "crash" and go straight to login screen, ending my current session. Sometimes my mouse cursor even changes to the X-mark. I can't see anything in gdm, x11, syslog etc. that would explain the crash. So far I've found best log from .xsession-errors which is here:
[Code]...
I got a lot IPv6 errors on the same log too, but those were caused by utorrent+too old wine. Didn't remember that upgrade deletes/disables extra-repos and I was running the stable wine (1.2.1) instead of the latest one (1.3.7). Upgrading wine solved the error from utorrent IPv6 connections.
So any ideas what I could do to fix these crashes? I'm not so much into clean re-install because of all the configuration I'll need to do then. I do have home on a separate partition but there's lots of software to install and configure.

Sometimes, out of the blue, my screen will suddenly change brightness. And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.
what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.

I am running 9.10 on a HP Compaq. Every few days X will die. The screen goes blank and will not display anything. I have to SSH in, but even trying various commands like gdm restart does not help. I eventually have to reboot the box. Below is a snippet (hopefully not too large) of dmesg:

I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.

I'm really new to Linux (meaning that I never programmed or anything) but have a major issue here: I have been using Ubuntu since 9.04 (always upgrading) and always with this Laptop, without problems. Then I installed 10.10, didn't like it and downgraded to 10.04. Thats when the issue came up. So now I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and have an Intel GMA 4500 graphic card. That, though, is all I know about the graphics on my Laptop.
The problem:Every now and then (mostly right after logging in, then randomly) my monitor will flicker quickly and then go black completely.
After I close the laptop and open it up again, the screen works fine for some seconds, then, without moving anything, it goes black again. Sometimes it just stays normal, too. Just changing the angle of the monitor doesn't help, only closing it completely and opening it.
1) It could be the cable loop.BUT: The issue only appears after logging on to Linux. And moving the monitor doesnt help, just closing it completely.
2) Graphic driver.I have no idea how the software part of Linux works considering graphics. I have read that many people have had problems with GMA 4500, so my hope is that it can be fixed.

GDM2 is doing something very weird on my Ubuntu Lucid install. It occasionally decides randomly to put the toolbar (with keyboard layouts, the time and date, shutdown options, and so forth) at the top of the screen when it appears. I think it's always supposed to be at the bottom of the screen. Why is this happening?

I am asking in the wrong place or anything like that, I tried to understand the Tutorials, but I am only human Oh and I am not a native speaker of English, So I also apologize for that...Okay enough apologizing, I will assume that you are all nice people and wouldn't have made fun of my stupidity anywayAs I said I am new to Linux and also to my PC. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I tried to install Windows on it, but it was displayed in only 16 colors ( I assume this is not connected to my current problem but it might be...) and I couldn't fix that so I installed Ubuntu 10.4.something( It asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the newest version...) . Since then I have been really happy, I only had minor problem with the chat software but after I googled it I found a solution and I even used the console for the first time in my life.
The problem with the chat software is back now, but I don't care about that.My Computer randomly stops working and the screen goes all weird. It switches between a mix of white and black bars, something really colorful and a black screen with text ( I have the feeling it's different text every time) I am not sure what happens after that, because I always turn it off and restart it. It won't react to anything when it is in this weird mode. I don't think there are any special situations in which it happens and I can't reproduce it, it just happens when I don't want it to happen. A friend who uses Linux said it might be a temperature problem, he only knew what I just told you. I am not sure if there is a connection between the time the computer has been on and the time it shuts off...I really like Linux and I would love to use it without ith when I said that I got my PC new ( it was used though) I was trying to say that I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu problem or not

I installed Natty on a 5-year-old Compaq with an integrated Intel 8xx chipset, using a Polaroid TLA-01511C monitor, and the list of available resolutions varies quite a bit each time I boot. Sometimes it will only give me 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480; sometimes it gives me a dozen resolutions ranging up to 1600x1200. Only once has it ever offered me the monitor's native resolution, 1280x800.
I'm guessing the EDID is being missent or misread each time. How can I set it to (ignore the EDID and) allow me to select 1280x800 each time? I did notice that when it was a Windows machine, it would give me the short list of resolutions when booted with the monitor off, but gave more options when booted with the monitor on. Here though, it seems to give the long list when booted with monitor off.
Here's my most current /var/log/Xorg.0.log; this time it booted with about a dozen modes available, but not 1280x800.

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.

i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .

Everything runs fine for about 3 hours, then it will randomly stop working.
Symptoms:
Mouse stops moving for 10 seconds.
Screen goes white.
Speakers start repeating last 10 seconds of whatever was playing.
Screen goes orange or purple with lines across it and random symbols...
At that point I hardware restart my computer and all is fine again

I am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.
Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.
This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

I recently installed from scratch the Lucid Lynx, and after changing the direction of the window buttons and a few things more (who was the idiot who thought on having a purple terminal?), I completely loved it.
I had one problem through, is that when I boot my computer, there is no splash shown. After the GRUB menu, all I see is a black terminal with no text for some time, and then a quick view of some colored text. Does anyone else have this problem? Here is the appropriate section of the grub.cfg file:
Code:
menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod ext2
