I added two lines on the Xcorg.conf file to try and add forward/back buttons on my mouse but after I restarted Ubuntu will not boot past the splash screen. Can I reset Xcorg.conf in recovery mode to undo things?
View 1 RepliesI upgraded Ubuntu a few times now (since 7.10) - and it still seems to be going well. I really enjoy some of the new features in Lucid - Ubuntu just keeps getting better! I dual-boot with Windows, but I use Ubuntu much more than I do Windows. I have a minor problem - my resolution keeps on re-setting itself to 1440x900 rather than 1920x1200. I think I've managed to isolate the problem. I have a single monitor, a DELL 2408wfp. I have the VGA and DVI connectors connected to the monitor at the same time - primarily because I could not get DVI to work under Karmic. I have disabled the VGA mode, so that only DVI is being used (i.e. I did this via ATI Catalyst Control Center).
When the computer boots, the screen defaults to 1440x900, on DVI. I use ATI Catalyst Control Center to change the resolution. Strangely enough, the ATI Catalyst Control Center tells me that 1920x1200 is the "Preferred" resolution. I select the preferred resolution, and it stays at that resolution until I reboot. On re-boot, the resolution changes back to 1440x900. Suspected theory is as follows:
1. Computer starts up. Computer says "do I have VGA signal"? If so, display in VGA for the BIOS setup, boot menu etc.
2. Gnome kicks in and determines it's in VGA mode. VGA likes to use 1440x900 because it feels like it. Computer changes resolution to 1440x900.
3. Gnome says "I should be using DVI mode, change to DVI".
4. What Lucid Lynx forgets to ask is "what resolution should I be using for DVI" - and uses the VGA resolution instead.
I tested this theory by removing the VGA cable from the monitor and re-booting. For the first time ever, Ubuntu booted into 1920x1200. I don't consider my work-around to be a fix, because I'm putting wear and tear on my VGA cable - as without VGA, I don't have fall-back if the DVI display driver stops working again.
I'm trying to make a particular file accessible on my computer ( /dev/uinput ) without having to use sudo or su - I've set up a wiimote to act as a remote for my media player, and it requires access to that file. When I use chmod, chgrp or chown to change the file's settings, it enables access to the file - however, when I reboot my PC, the settings get reset, and I have to change the access rights when I first use it again. I've tried using the following commands to make the changes (substituting my username/groupname as user and group below), as root:

I made some change to my sysctl.conf file and it they doesn't seem to load at boot? Each time I boot I need to send a sudo sysctl -p command to load the new parameter!

I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:
In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line
Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf
However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied
It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.
My sysctl.conf in /etc isn't loaded at boot, it does however get parsed with the command # sysctl -p I believe this problem started when I got the 3.0.0 kernel just a few days ago. Does everyone has this problem? Then it's probably a bug.

phpmyadmin files are in usr/share/phpmyadmin but i cant find anything in my apache2.conf or httpd.conf files that point to that directory.How do I find the route taken from the Server root "ServerRoot "/etc/apache2"" to the phpmy admin files.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up samba. I am editing the smb.conf.master file, and then using the testparm -s "smb.conf.master > smb.conf" command to make the smb.conf file. I am running this command as root. However, the smb.conf is not updating with the changes I am making. Does anyone know why? It just stays the same no matter what I change. The only way to change it is to edit the smb.conf file itself.

Continued at * so order may be followed.Fairly new to Fedora, I had reset my Monitor setting from the Graphical Interface on the Desktop, (got an out of range error) Was able to SSH in and reset Xorg to correct values, however now the server does not boot to the Graphical Desktop, just has a spinning blue circle on black background. The server has booted and I can get in with SSH, all functions of the server appear to be working correctly, i.e.web, mail, ftp, etc. However it never goes to the Graphical login page as before.*Fedora 8..the perfect server + ISPconfig. On boot when Fedora states press any key I can edit the following line:

I have used nVidia my entire linux life (about 5 years clean and sober from M$). Recently, I have switched over to an ATI Radeon HD 5550 card. After many trial and error setups, I finally got the resolutions and screens set properly with a xrandr command, which I have now added to a shell script in ~/.kde4/Autostart. It has worked for me for a while now, but I really would like to get it set in the xorg.conf.d files so that I don't have to wait that extra few seconds after login for the screens to fix themselves.
Is there an easy way to take what xrandr does and export it to the xorg.conf.d files? If my video card recognizes my default monitor as DFP2 and the tv that I only sometimes use with this computer as DFP1, how can I ensure that the login screen for openSUSE/KDE4 appears on my default screen (an issue that drove me nuts a few months ago when I tried Ubuntu to see what all the fuss was about)?
My xrandr command that I use to fix it all is:
xrandr --output DFP2 --auto --pos 0x0 --primary --output DFP1 --auto --right-of
I am using the proprietary Radeon driver from the ioda repository. DFP2 is a monitor which has a optimum resolution of 1920x1200, and DFP1 is an 1080p HDTV. I can not reverse the output plugs for the screens even though my monitor is an HDMI monitor because I use the actual HDMI port on the video card to output audio to the television and the other plug is a DVI that I convert to HDMI for the monitor.
I'm trying to set up some shares on this pc and every time I try to edit the /etc/exports file I get this error. I get the same error when I try to edit /boot/grub.conf file or any other files. Does not matter what editor I use. I'm running f14.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using ubuntu on a new desktop for a couple of months, but i had an old HP that was given to me in my basement. It has 384Mb of ram, and thats because i had a 256Mb stick laying around. I installed debian becuase it is more suited for older hardware (at least from what I've read). It installed fine, but it boots to a blank screen, and pressing ctrl+alt+F2 bring me to the command line. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa, to find out my video card isn't even shown. I ran lspci and I found that it says my graphics card is Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset graphics controller (rev3) In the device section of xorg.conf, it merly says Identifier"Configured Video Device"

It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?

I have Lucid. I played with compiz and emerald. I put everything back. But my theme is no longer as it was before I started. Similar, but the icon set and windows are a little different. Under 'appearance' the theme, which I'm told is called 'light' isn't visible. And I don't know the original icon set. How can I restore my desktop to look as it did on installation.

I followed the instructions here, but they seem to be out of date. The files cert8.db, key3.db, and secmod.db are not in my ~/.evolution, nor was I able to find any files with those names in any folder referencing evolution in my home folder.

This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences.Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.
To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script.My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?
As said in the subject, desktop decoration settings keeps resetting after rebooting. For me it is quite boring and annoying. Why it happens? Ubuntu should keeps my preferences (as in previous versions - my Ubu 10.10, Unity)

When i first started it up my top panel was a solid gray and had a classic look, i saw online that i had to do Alt-F2, type gconf-editor then go to apps,panel,global click locked down, then i log out, log back in and it is fixed with my system theme. after i restart my computer it has the same classic look, and i have to go back to gconf, log out, relog, log out, relog and it finally works. why is it doing this?

I tried to adjust my system clock to daylight savings time, but now everytime I restart the computer it's reset. For example, I set the clock to 11:40 AM, Mon. 15 Feb. Upon restart, it's now 12:05 AM, Tue. 16 Feb. I've readjusted the clock several times, and it resets at every reboot.

PC has a static ip 10.162.41.159 (supplied by editing and saving eth0 file, not by command line) in LAN. netmask is 10.162.41.128 and gateway is 10.162.41.129. My problem is after rebooting, ip is resetting into 10.162.41.130. A little over a week ago, I started encountering packages in conflict. I entered a RHEL help desk ticket that has been open for over a week. The person assigned the ticket is trying to clear one error at a time.
Once I remove the package in conflict, I get pending transactions; follow the instructions to clear those; and then get more conflicts. I'd like to reset everything without re-installing.
