Networking :: IP Is Resetting After Reboot
Feb 22, 2010
I have a problem with my client PC. PC has a static ip 10.162.41.159 (supplied by editing and saving eth0 file, not by command line) in LAN. netmask is 10.162.41.128 and gateway is 10.162.41.129. My problem is after rebooting, ip is resetting into 10.162.41.130. It happens after rebooting even network cable is removed!!!if i restart network service ip will reassigned into 10.162.41.159. i dont know why this happens.

As said in the subject, desktop decoration settings keeps resetting after rebooting. For me it is quite boring and annoying. Why it happens? Ubuntu should keeps my preferences (as in previous versions - my Ubu 10.10, Unity)

I've just installed Debian 8 XFCE and I can't get the sound working properly after a reboot. I mean I can but it keeps resetting to default audio output (analog-stereo) after reboot.
I set it to Digital Stereo in Pavucontrol settings, reboot and here comes analog-stereo again.
I've tried setting digital stereo as default using pactl in the terminal but same problem. When I change settings then relog in my session, sound is working, but when I reboot it reverts back to default output. Strange.
Here's my sound card info :
lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)

I'm facing bit of a conundrum with my new server. It is essentially a distributed-virtual Plesk Virtuoso container with a rather simple LAMP setup (PHP5 etc) and virtual hosting. Running 10.04 LTS.
The issue is that on each reboot, the /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname files are reset with their original configs causing the virtual hosting to break, i.e. rather than hosting the vhosts correctly, it essentially routes all traffic to /var/www, or essentially 000-default ~ this beats the whole point of vhosting in the first place!
Is there any way to get around them being overwritten at boot? A very crude workaround would be to set a script to load at boot via init.d and have it rewrite both files to their correct configs - of course, I have no idea as to the point during boot at which they get replaced.

Most of the time I rebooting, my resolv.conf is getting updated by resolvconf program, so the network connection cannot be reached. I followed this: Debian User Forums - View topic - Solving DNS problem (dhclient & resolv.conf)

I was away for about a week, and on being back home I got on my notebook MAC but to find my MAC could not get to the internet! The Modem and the router were already switched on. Usually, this gave no problem. However, this time after repeated tries I was very sure something must be wrong. To cut the story short I managed to find a friend who knows another guy who is a qualified computer techy. He actually helped reset the whatever settings and upon getting it all done I asked what was the root of the problem. His explanation was "things like this does happen and we need to reset the system".
Just to make sure I will not need to bother my friend and his friend should thing like this crop up again, I really appreciate to get a guide on what you actually do to reset whatever that needs to be reset.

Well, I reinstalled after this update fiasco we just had and now I am having issues with my driver resetting. I open terminal and type in:
Quote:
sudo rmmod rt2800usb
Finishes properly. I then pull my USB device, plug it back in, new driver kicks in. Wireless then works fine. However, upon reboot, it's back to using the rt2800usb driver, which doesn't work. So I head back to terminal and repeat the step above and all's well after.
I am fairly new to Fedora, so how can I actually get Fedora to completely blacklist the rt2800usb driver?

I just installed ndiswrapper so I wouldn't have to deal with it. Thing is, I'm not fairly certain my driver is one of the ones ubunutu comes with. I removed ndiswrapper (from the add/remove section, not sure if thats a full uninstall or if I should of used terminal), but my driver is still listed as "ndiswrapper". How do I completely remove that, so my system can use default drivers?

I've had my wireless networking (on an Acer Aspire laptop) working perfectly well for at least six months. Now, quite suddenly, after a reboot I get the message from wicd, "No wireless networks found". I probably was running a week or so before that without needing a reboot. Windows wireless is fine (I'm using it to send this post). In addition, my sound stopped working and I see a fleeting message to the effect that the sound system is reverting from analog to digital.I'm running Kubuntu 9.10. My guess is that something in a recent round of updates knocked me out of the box. How can I proceed to set things aright?

I tried to adjust my system clock to daylight savings time, but now everytime I restart the computer it's reset. For example, I set the clock to 11:40 AM, Mon. 15 Feb. Upon restart, it's now 12:05 AM, Tue. 16 Feb. I've readjusted the clock several times, and it resets at every reboot.

My problem is I need a broad method to reset the rpm database on my [almost] up-to-date RHEL 5 WS system.
I do not fiddle around with installing new things on this system or perform strange configurations.
A little over a week ago, I started encountering packages in conflict. I entered a RHEL help desk ticket that has been open for over a week. The person assigned the ticket is trying to clear one error at a time.
Once I remove the package in conflict, I get pending transactions; follow the instructions to clear those; and then get more conflicts. I'd like to reset everything without re-installing.

My issue is like this: I have a laptop (dell vostro 1400, NVidia 8400M video card) running Fedora 12 up to date. My desktop is KDE 4. I usually run the laptop connected to the power outlet, so my power profile is set to "performance". This power profile sets the screen brightness to the maximum. However, when I'm in the dark, I want to lower the screen brightness. The shortcut keys work, and the screen brightness is lowered. However, for some reason, after about 30 seconds it resets itself to the highest brightness setting. No matter how I set the brightness, it will always reset itself. Any ideas what can i do to correct this?

I've got on board HDA ATI SB using VIA VT1708S chipset. I have to get into Alsamixer everytime I reboot the computer to reset the 'Master' volume level so that I can hear the sound on my computer. I also have a Logitech 9000 webcam with built in mic also.. It is my understanding they may both may be conflicting with one and another. They both work. Alsamixer doesn't have a setting that allows you to save your levels once they have been adjusted, just 'esc'. How can I set alsa mixer up to keep my settings so that I don't have to continually reset them when the computer is rebooted?

/etc/passwd permissions keep getting reset to 600. When I set it to 644 as su, it eventually changes back. This occurs on my openSuse10.2 machine but not the openSuse 11.1 machine, but I assume that is irrelevant. Is there something that got tweaked that I need to change in Yast to stop this from happening?

I communication with different subsystems using serial port. In some subsystems after running for a while, I start getting invalid data inspite of system sending correct data. For dealing with this situation I used to
reset serial ports by closing and reopening serial port, it was doing the trick but somehow when I have implemented this in my new application, this also doesn't work.
void CPort::
The ClosePort function invokes close system call.
some other way to reset serial port in Linux? I am using RHEL 4, C++ and Qt 4.2.1 for my application development. Also I have used multithreading to implement each subsystem in a separate thread. Its strange that if A,B,C are three threads, A & B run fine together but when C is introduced B starts receiving invalid data after sometime and never recovers even after resetting the port as mentioned above.

I am tasked with resetting a user's password on a Windows Vista workstation. I am familiar with the chntpw utility, and I went through the motions of using Knoppix 5.1 as my live os, and downloading the aforementioned utility from the Debian website. Unfortunately, I ran into issues with glibc, and was unable to run the chntpw application. I went through the motions of booting with Knoppix 6.2, but I could not readily find the utilties that were available on the earlier version of the distribution.
Does anyone know of a latter day version of Knoppix, or any live distribution, that has utilities for mounting Windows partitions in read/write mode, and can utilize the chntpw utility to reset the password?

Yesterday, my mouse cursor in KDE/Qt apps suddenly changed. I always had the 'classic' theme set in systemsettings, and that resulted in a standard pointy arrow cursor. Yesterday, however, as soon as i logged on I had a weird 'triangle with a circle cut out' cursor. In systemsettings, it says this is "KDE Classic Cursor", 'the default cursor for KDE2 and KDE3'. I personally find it rather horrid, so I changed it. However, When I exit X and log back in, the 'classic' cursor is back. No matter which alternative cursor I choose, it only lasts for that session, although the cursor I actually selected is shown highlichted in systemsettings... I have tried deleting my .kde to no avail.
The only change I made before this started happening was adding a line to my .xinitrc to enable a menu called 'yeahlauch' which is part of yeahwm (Although I use xmonad as a WM and no desktop environment, so these cursor troubles happen only in KDE/Qt apps). EDIT: I have tried commenting out the new line and the problem persists.

Under 'appearance' the theme, which I'm told is called 'light' isn't visible. And I don't know the original icon set. How can I restore my desktop to look as it did on installation.

I'm trying to reset the password that Evolution prompts you for when working with certs.Specifically, the "Enter the password for 'NSS User Private Key and Certificate Services'" password. I followed the instructions here, but they seem to be out of date. The files cert8.db, key3.db, and secmod.db are not in my ~/.evolution, nor was I able to find any files with those names in any folder referencing evolution in my home folder.

10.10 x64. This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences. Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.
To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script. My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?

When i first started it up my top panel was a solid gray and had a classic look, i saw online that i had to do Alt-F2, type gconf-editor then go to apps, panel, global click locked down, then i log out, log back in and it is fixed with my system theme. after i restart my computer it has the same classic look, and i have to go back to gconf, log out, relog, log out, relog and it finally works. why is it doing this?
