Ubuntu :: Resetting DISPLAY Property
Sep 6, 2010
So I was fiddling around with things earlier today, trying to figure out how to use ssh to remotely view a desktop, and I accidentally set the DISPLAY property to something else using Code: export DISPLAY=something I can't remember.But I don't know how to set it back, nor what it should be set back to.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and have a 2TB external hard drive where I store several hundred movies. Each movie is contained in its own folder (in case the movie is broken up into more than 1 file). All the movie folders are contained in one "Movies" folder, so a typical movie location would be something like:
/media/MyBook/Movies/The Matrix/The Matrix (disc1).avi
Because of this, my movies are in alphabetical order, which is nice if I'm looking for a specific movie, but I'd also like to classify each movie into one or more genres. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a certain type of movie, and don't want to just browse aimlessly through the alphabetical list. So for example, The Matrix might be classified as Action, Science Fiction, and Thriller. If I were to add these genres into the "Notes" property of a movie folder, is it possible to conduct a search for words only in these notes? So that if I did a search for "Thriller" this movie and any other movie I classified as a thriller would show up?

I have a Dell Laptop Studio 1735 with an ATI Radeon HD3650 installed and OpenSuse 11.3.
The other features are:
My intention is to install the property driver as showed in the following link
Upgrading ATI driver with atiupgrade
But before, I would like to ask you few questions, because even after having read very carefully the post, I have some doubts:
1) Do I have to run the script in X or KDE?
2) Every time I updated the kernel (using the online updating for example), I understood that I must recompile the module fglrx.ko, with the script at the following address:
automatically recompile kernel modules after kernel update
Or I will get a lof of video issues. The file fglrx.ko will be created in the following path:
/lib/modules/2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop/extra/fglrx.ko
3) I must be sure that in the file /etc/X11/Xorg.conf, the parameter Driver must be setup to fglrx and not radeonhd.
Unfortunately, in my computer this file does not exist, what I found is /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.install and as I reported below there is no trace of a Driver parameter.
Code:
As you can see there is no "Driver" parameter. Is it a problem?
4) In the case something will go wrong, can I roll back to my previous driver?
5) Do I always type the command atiupgrade - - initial, the first time I perform the installation?

I'm working on a script notifying me after a client changes a log level on a given server. I get the following error after running the script:
LogonUser [
odeunivmo3domaincommon]: unable to get property
LogonPassword [
odeunivmo3domaincommon]: unable to get property
I get the email notification fine, the environment is set to common. I think the problem is somewhere in these lines of code.
SCP_USER=`${cer_exe}/lreg -getp \
ode\\${NODE}\domain\\${loc_env} LogonUser`
SCP_PSWD=`${cer_exe}/lreg -getp \
ode\\${NODE}\domain\\${loc_env} LogonPassword`

I have Lucid. I played with compiz and emerald. I put everything back. But my theme is no longer as it was before I started. Similar, but the icon set and windows are a little different. Under 'appearance' the theme, which I'm told is called 'light' isn't visible. And I don't know the original icon set. How can I restore my desktop to look as it did on installation.

I'm trying to reset the password that Evolution prompts you for when working with certs.Specifically, the "Enter the password for 'NSS User Private Key and Certificate Services'" password. I followed the instructions here, but they seem to be out of date. The files cert8.db, key3.db, and secmod.db are not in my ~/.evolution, nor was I able to find any files with those names in any folder referencing evolution in my home folder.

10.10 x64. This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences.Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.
To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script.My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?

My problem is I need a broad method to reset the rpm database on my [almost] up-to-date RHEL 5 WS system.
I do not fiddle around with installing new things on this system or perform strange configurations.
A little over a week ago, I started encountering packages in conflict. I entered a RHEL help desk ticket that has been open for over a week. The person assigned the ticket is trying to clear one error at a time.
Once I remove the package in conflict, I get pending transactions; follow the instructions to clear those; and then get more conflicts. I'd like to reset everything without re-installing.

I upgraded Ubuntu a few times now (since 7.10) - and it still seems to be going well. I really enjoy some of the new features in Lucid - Ubuntu just keeps getting better! I dual-boot with Windows, but I use Ubuntu much more than I do Windows. I have a minor problem - my resolution keeps on re-setting itself to 1440x900 rather than 1920x1200. I think I've managed to isolate the problem. I have a single monitor, a DELL 2408wfp. I have the VGA and DVI connectors connected to the monitor at the same time - primarily because I could not get DVI to work under Karmic. I have disabled the VGA mode, so that only DVI is being used (i.e. I did this via ATI Catalyst Control Center).
When the computer boots, the screen defaults to 1440x900, on DVI. I use ATI Catalyst Control Center to change the resolution. Strangely enough, the ATI Catalyst Control Center tells me that 1920x1200 is the "Preferred" resolution. I select the preferred resolution, and it stays at that resolution until I reboot. On re-boot, the resolution changes back to 1440x900. Suspected theory is as follows:
1. Computer starts up. Computer says "do I have VGA signal"? If so, display in VGA for the BIOS setup, boot menu etc.
2. Gnome kicks in and determines it's in VGA mode. VGA likes to use 1440x900 because it feels like it. Computer changes resolution to 1440x900.
3. Gnome says "I should be using DVI mode, change to DVI".
4. What Lucid Lynx forgets to ask is "what resolution should I be using for DVI" - and uses the VGA resolution instead.
I tested this theory by removing the VGA cable from the monitor and re-booting. For the first time ever, Ubuntu booted into 1920x1200. I don't consider my work-around to be a fix, because I'm putting wear and tear on my VGA cable - as without VGA, I don't have fall-back if the DVI display driver stops working again.

I'm facing bit of a conundrum with my new server. It is essentially a distributed-virtual Plesk Virtuoso container with a rather simple LAMP setup (PHP5 etc) and virtual hosting. Running 10.04 LTS.
The issue is that on each reboot, the /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname files are reset with their original configs causing the virtual hosting to break, i.e. rather than hosting the vhosts correctly, it essentially routes all traffic to /var/www, or essentially 000-default ~ this beats the whole point of vhosting in the first place!
Is there any way to get around them being overwritten at boot? A very crude workaround would be to set a script to load at boot via init.d and have it rewrite both files to their correct configs - of course, I have no idea as to the point during boot at which they get replaced.

How do I restore the desktop environment settings?Since things changed after a command-line instruction, feel free to post the appropriate command-line instruction.

I'm setting the root window background to a gradient with the following command:
Code:
DISPLAY=:0 fbsetroot -gradient Elliptic -from blue -to black
What I would like to do next is to display a small logo in the center of the background without resetting the root window background color. Right now I tried the following two commands and they both reset the root window to a solid color... I would like to keep the gradient color.
Code:
vmsetbg -e logo.png # resets the root window
fbsetbg -c logo.png # also does the same thing
I cannot use just a single image because the same image has to look good on all screen sizes from netbooks to 52" TVs
