I've recently installed Ubuntu to my USB stick (Installed from CD so not Live Persistent). But it hangs every few seconds, I think this is because of the low read/write speed of the usb stick. However when using the Live version booting/shutting down takes a long while, I basically need it to be able to boot fast, run fast, and shutdown fast.
View 7 RepliesI am doing real time programming in C++, under Linux. I have two processes, let me say A and B. A process is being started periodically, every 5ms. B process is being started every 10ms. The process A is doing data processing. The process B is reading that data and displays it. I am confused about how to run periodically processes. The problem is that the period of process A should be as much as it is possible accurate (5ms). For the process B it isn't so important. I have created independent processes, each in one .cpp file, and I am starting them from bash file. Is that OK? I don't have to make child processes in order to have parallel processes?

(This is an image what I have to click on, after it I will receive a reward, then I have to wait 12 hours to benefit from it again.) My first idea was that to code it in C++, and I have searched the internet for the appropriate C++ headers, but I did not find any. So as you can see its not a concrete programming question, my main question is that, in what way could I do the above mentioned things.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
Trying to install Ubuntu (tried several releases) on HP Pavillion Pentium 4 Proccessor 515 2.93 Gig 1M L2 cache 533mhz 90nm . Have 1 gig ram and 1Tb hd. Hangs on initial install screen for ever. Tried versions from 8.10 (origional disk) to 11.01. Machine works perfectly on Windows XP but who wants that? The model is pavillion 1000 system number pl397aa.

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
I have a Dell Inspiron M5030 and ran the live Gnome CD. everything works until I install. The install goes fine and it boots fine but when i log in it just hangs at the desktop with a spinning cursor. No menus no nothing just the wallpaper?

I am a neophyte to linux so please cut me some slack. I'm installing the latest version of ubuntu on my old Dell Latitude C840 Laptop. (386 desktop install from CD). I cant seem to get past 79% completion. It just hangs there. I have to assume I'm not the first person to have this problem. I'm reasonably adept with computers but all of the threads/blogs that seemingly address this problem are lost to me. Can anyone provide a simple... or at least step by step process on how I can fix this?

After closing the dialog that told me it finished installing, the "Package Installer" window was left grayed out and impossible to close (the 'x' button does nothing). How can I terminate this program? Why does Ubuntu not have a way to end processes that don't respond to input?
It does not seem to be listed in the system monitor.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to upgrade an EeePC from 9.10 (I think it is) to 10.10. I've tried two different thumb drives and a CD, redownloading the UNR image each time. What happens is it will get the the screen where it says 'Preparing to install Ubuntu-Netbook'. I hit forward, and then the little dial just spins indefinitely. I've also tried plugging the thumb drives into different USB ports, and playing around the with the hard disk compatibility mode on in the BIOS (currently set to 'compatible', but AHCI, IDE Enhanced etc made no difference).

I backed up my user directory, did a fresh install of 11.04 (old version was 9.10), and then restored my user directory. (User account information, UID, GID, and file permissions have remained the same.)
Thunderbird hangs w/:

The Thunderbird window never appears.
I have tried removing ~/.thunderbird/ and ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/, to no avail. I have tried creating a new dummy account and running Thunderbird -- that works okay. So this has to be something in my user home area, I just can't figure out what. While I can wipe my home area and start over, I have about 60 other users who are going to face this same issue when I upgrade their machines, so I am desperate to resolve the issue some other way.
I just upgraded my system's motherboard with an Asus M4N78 Pro and did a clean install of 9.10. The install seems to go fine but when it finishes and does the final restart I seems to get stuck at the place you'd normally see the GRUB menu. Instead all I see is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the left corner. This isn't just a long boot, its stuck. It never progresses past this point.
During the install everything seems fine. Video, network etc. I've tried several reburned CDs and I get the same result each time. For the record I've installed Ubuntu as a single partition an IDE drive. The bios is set to boot from that drive. ow the heck can I figure out what is happening? Is there a way to boot and display any and all messages displayed? Is this thing hanging in GRUB somewhere?
I can not get ubuntu to install on my workstation. I have the 64-bit cd (am currently trying the 32-bit cd with similar results) and it won't install. I get to the ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots underneath it and it looks like it's trying to run for several minutes. After the several minutes, the screen simply goes black and I can't do anything.

Now, when starting up Ubuntu, it appears to log in fine, but right near the end of the theme and before the desktop loads, it hangs, repeating a slice of the intro music over and over again. What could be causing this problem?Note: On every ubuntu disk I use, it also says that modules/..../Kernel something is missing from the disk quickly before booting the live session.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on an HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop. I used a live CD to install Ubuntu 10.10 to an external USB hard drive. The install completed successfully, but after a reboot I am stuck on a black screen with a white cursor. Before that I see nothing but the initial HP startup screen. I am able to run the live CD without problems, and I have been running Ubuntu from a 4GB thumb drive (which I installed on using the same live CD that I used to install on my current external hard drive). I had no problems whatsoever running from the CD or thumb drive, so I can't figure out why the external hard drive would be so different.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to migrate from Mandriva to Ubuntu and attempted to install the 11.04 and 10.04 CD distos on a 7-year old computer (Elite Group L7VMM3 motherboard, 1.4 ghz AMD Duron, 1.2GB RAM, 40GB IDE HDD).
The 11.04 installation CD makes it through the HD partitioning (erase everything), Computer name, time zone, and keyboard detection, but hangs after starting the "Copying files" stage of the install. The progress bar stops just below the in "Copying files...".
The 10.04 installation CD makes it through the "Installing the base system", "Retrieving console-terminus" with the progress bar stalled at 6%. Although the computer is old, Vista successfully installs on it.
Had problems with hard drives yesterday, wouldn't recognise them after I'd installed Linux. Today I fixed that problem (another thread on here, in the hardware section) but now, every single time the install gets to 75%, it asks me to insert the CDROM and basically hangs.
Hitting enter doesn't try to fire up the CDROM, there's zero noise from it. It did this once yesterday but all other tries worked fine. Today it's failed the 7 different times I've tried, in exactly the same place, each time asking for the CD, even tried re-burning the CD, still failing at the same place. It's just after doing something to APT, then storing something (not very helpful I know). Can get a command prompt by CTRL-ALT_F2, but have no clue as to how to proceed when I get there.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded 11.2 to a flash drive and while updating it from online the updates hangs at 48% and the last line reads:
Installing ./rpm/x86_64/libexpat1-32bit-2.0.1-92.4.1.x86_64.rpm: "XML Parser Toolkit"
This fist loading bar is at 100% and total is at 48%.
Is there a way to safely exit this program it appears to be frozen.
I've looked around the threads and can't find this exact problem. I'm on a Compaq Presario F700 running openSUSE 11.3. During boot it hangs in three different places, all of which I can clear up by clicking the mouse buttons or moving my finger on the pad.
The first place it hangs is after: doing fast boot ^[^[^[creating device nodes with udev
The second place is INIT version 2.88 booting
The third place is copying static /dev content.
Like I said, I can get through all three and everything else works great, I just hate having to watch my machine boot to catch these.
I have been using slackware for quite some time now and love installing software in it. Since you get to know whats actually going into your system adn all. Anyways I have been trying to download and install Rosegarden all day now. I installed all the dependencies listed here:

i have to physically stop it because my computer hangs up so bad and it sits like that for hours! Granted this is Rosegarden 10.04.1 but i have also installed 10.04.2 under my downloads section and ran into the same problem. Now i know that slack 13 dropped QT3 and went to QT4. Rosegarden 10.04.2 was supposed to run on QT4 but i get the same code and the same hang up every single time. No matter what version i try to install. I only tried 10.04.1 thinking that maybe it would work on the slack 13 kernel since thats the number that was for this build in slackbuild.org and 10.04.2 was in the 13.1 tree but neither of them install and just hang up on the computer. Is it a qt3 to a qt4 issue?
Have downloaded the image twice now and burned it to CD twice. This is a brand new HP 6530b. It will boot to the CD and come up with the ubuntu install menu. I can arrow up and down, but when I press enter on any entry nothing happens. The CD will spin momentarily but then stop. Been trying to make this work for two weeks.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu and right now I am running it inside Windows. I burnt it onto a cd so I could install it onto my 2nd harddrive. I know the cd is fine. When I boot off the cd a purple screen loads up with some weird symbols at the bottom looks like a picture of a battery = and then a picture of a stick figure man. If I hit f6 I can get to the option screen. I've tried using noapci, nomodeset, disabling the framebuffer, and vga=normal. None of them work as soon as I hit enter to start installing Ubuntu it just sits there on the menu screen and never does anything.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty old acer lap top. I used to run xubuntu on it, then I formatted it and installed freeBSD just to check them out. I tried to install last version of xubuntu then, and I got a message that /dev/../loop0 couldn' d mount or sth then I learned about lubuntu and I tried to installed them but I tried both a dvd and a cd and on both cases after I select language and "install on this machine" I just see a screen with 4 red dots writing "Ubuntu 10.10" that stays like this forever.. and nothing happens. the same if I select to boot from the cd just to check the environment. I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just completed a dual boot installation of FC10. The install was done from CD's I downloaded from the Fedora website. The installation (seemed to have) went fine, and the machine still boots into XP if selected from the menu. The Fedora installation does not complete the boot process. I have three bars that move across the bottom of the screen, and the Fedora 10 graphic tuns white, and then the system hangs. I have let it sit at this screen for as long as 30 minutes. The screen will blank occasionally, but returns to the same place if I hit a key on the keyboard.
I have it installed on an old HP E800 netserver, running dual P3-866mHz processors, 2GB ram, a ATI Radeon 7000 video card, and three 36GB SCSI drives, non-raid. I know FC10 will run on this machine, as I have a friend running it on another E800 without any problems. This machine does have on-board video that is disabled only by plugging a different video card in (Phoenix BIOS).
