Ubuntu :: Package Installer Hangs After Install?
Aug 8, 2010
I just installed a .deb package using the Package Installer in Ubuntu. After closing the dialog that told me it finished installing, the "Package Installer" window was left grayed out and impossible to close (the 'x' button does nothing). How can I terminate this program? Why does Ubuntu not have a way to end processes that don't respond to input?
It does not seem to be listed in the system monitor.

I have a laptop which has Xubuntu on a Wubi install. I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.

I just installed 32-bit CentOS 5.5 in a Vmware virtual machine. I'm unable to install RPMs from either the graphical U/I (Pirut) or CLI (Yum). Pirut stops responding (no screen repainting) after displaying the "Updating software" dialog; Yum gets to the display of "Running Transaction" where it hangs. The initial installation (from the net-install ISO) obviously succeeded, and the after-install update of about 50 packages also worked fine.
yum.log contains nothing past the entries made during the initial install. Because I had a problem with corrupted files from a mirror during installation I tried using the baseurl setting in CentOS-Base.repo instead of mirrorlist, but that had no effect.

The Ubuntu installer hangs on step 3 0f 6, the stage in which you select the keyboard layout. The computer it is being installed on is a Toshiba Satellite.disk had previously worked to install on a macbook for dualbooting.

trying to install ubuntu on a 2nd partition on a Dell D630. The OS currently on it is Windows 7 Enterprise. I've used Windows 7 to repartition and have 80GB available for the Ubuntu install but when I put the CD in to run it gets detected as a bootable CD and starts to boot but freezes after Loading...I've left it for 2 hrs and it never progressed past that screen. I've also downloaded and burnt the ISO three times (twice in the 64 bit version and once in the 32). In all cases the install never advances. I've also tried a USB install but couldn't get that to boot

I can boot up 11.04 amd64 to an sd card, and in the early alphas I could install it fine. Older versions of ubuntu install fine (10.10), too.
But since about beta 1 or so of 11.04 (and with the final release), it boots up and I see the installer and it says, yes, you have enough disk space and so forth. But then I click the 'forward' button to proceed with the install and it just hangs with a spinning cursor.
Any one else have this problem or know a workaround/fix? Or know how I can turn on debug messages or so forth to see where exactly it is hanging?
I'm trying to install to an hp tm2t (no cd drive).

I am trying to install 9.1. On bootup the CD loads and gives me the options on Installation, Try Ub etc. However after I choose install the BW logo shows up but nothing happens after that.
Incidentally i have 2 of these machines with 9.1 and 10.04 installing fine in the other one. In this one the main difference is a newer DVD burner. The other one also has a DVD burner but older.
The DVD burner is about 7 months old - purchases earlier in the year.
So wondering if loading the driver is an issue? if so how does the CD load and even the logo loads after Install is selected?
Or is it a different issue and would there be different options to try when installing? I would rather not have to replace the DVD burner.

Just bought a new computer that I will use as server:
Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard
AMD Phenon II 1090T
16 Gb RAM
4 x Seagate 2Tb hard disks
I tried to install Ubuntu server 10.04 and 10.10, both 64 bit, having similar results. Also I have tried enabling and disabling the RAID card. On 10.04 installer hangs preparing disk partitioning phase at 43%, on 10.10 hangs at the same stage 45%. Must I download something and apply before that phase?

I've just decided to downgrade from 64-bit to 32-bit Ubuntu. I created a live USB from the most recent (as of today) 11.04 download, booted up, and selected the option to replace Ubuntu. (Also on my HDD are a Windows partition and a shared partition for documents.)The installer hung at the timezone select page - and, foolishly, I hard-restarted the PC. I can get into 'try Ubuntu' without problems, but every time I try to actually install, it hangs. I can't boot into Windows, since GRUB seems to have been overwritten in my failed partial install. (I can get to a 'grub rescue' prompt, though.)
I suspected it might have something to do with my internet connection - I need to go through a university proxy script, so I'm not sure whether the installer will actually have internet access, even after I've been able to apply proxy settings while running Ubuntu from the USB.

I've not jumped on the Alpha/Beta upgrade's this time round so have decided to upgrade by doing a fresh install. I'm using the normal desktop install cd via usb. On the drive setup I choose to manually setup the partitions. I deleted the partition which help Lucid. Created a new partition with the root path. All good so far. I selected my home partition and selected use as 'ext2', entered /home as the mount point. Clicking ok to return, showed the /home partition as marked to be formatted, I was unable to change this ... so I decided to quit the installer and reboot ...
1st problem ... the root partition for Lucid was deleted, and a new empty partition created, despite the fact I had not confirmed the actions.
2nd problem ... rebooting with the live cd (which I'm on now) and running the installer, it hangs when I select manual partitioning.

I'm trying to install Wheezy (amd64) from the daily netinst image with the text-based installer. The PC will lock up randomly at some point in the process (usually after about 5-10 minutes). The video signal cuts out, keyboard lights are unresponsive, and I have to hard-reset the machine.I was previously trying to install Linux Mint Debian Edition and had the same problem. Another user reports that this is due to a bug in the nouveau nVidia driver, but I can't confirm it.URL...
I assume the Debian text installer isn't using nouveau, so it seems unlikely that would be the problem. The random timing does suggest an overheating problem, though, and the fact that the video signal drops out would seem to implicate the video card. I had no lockups at all with the OS that was previously installed (Ubuntu 11.04).

When I try to install something VIA Software center, there's always something else installing first. So, I chose the obvious thing, and ran sudo dpkg --configure -a. Here's what it fed me
Code:
joshua@joshua-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for joshua:
Setting up sun-java6-doc (6-15-1) ...
This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the JDK documentation. You will need to go download one of the archives:
jdk-6u10-docs.zip jdk-6u10-docs-ja.zip
(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation).
Please visit [URL] now and download. The file should be owned by root.root and be copied
to /tmp. [Press RETURN to try again, 'no' + RETURN to abort]. I went to the website and couldn't find either file.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I have a situation to where I need to use synaptic package instead of Ubuntu Software Center. How do I change the default *deb package manager from "Ubuntu Software Center" to "Synaptic Package Manager". I have users that are not to cli savvy so I need them to be able to do this in the GUI. I have clients that are having trouble installing a package that hangs because of the installation agreement(terminal window) that has to be answered but because the terminal window is not being displayed, it cannot be viewed it just hangs so I want them to use synaptic manager.

So I tried to download adobe flashplayer from a site I'm not sure of, and it didn't install flashplugin-installer. My pc always bugs me about having a broken packet and i'm not able to download anything else because of it. I've tried for a long time now and visited like every site to try to get rid of it. It says "E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal."
When I try to delete it in system package manager. And it says I need to do this "This package is a transitional package that can safely be removed after you installed flashplugin-installer." I can't find where to install this and when I did think I found the link I try to type my password for terminal and it just says sorry, try again for some reason. I got ubuntu yesterday so I am new to this.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

just installed ubuntu on my laptop (msi gt640) and, whilst attempting to install something from the software center, get an error. in full, it is: There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks. Please report this error at http://launchpad.net/aptdaemon/+filebug and retry.Under Details, it states:

I'm logged in as root and want to run Add/Remove Software (Package Installer) but get the message telling me
Code:
Running graphical applications as a privileged user should be avoided for security reasons. Package management applications are security sensitive and therefore this application will now close.
How must I install applications? Surely the world is getting paranoid with all this hackers and viruses, because with every new version O/S, the security features gets more and more; up to the point that you can't fricken do and play around with your pc as you would.

sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq mysql-server-5.1 but even that just hangs forever. I just want to remove the package so I can install the other updates

I'm trying to install F12 on an iMac G4 (ppc). I partitioned the HD with OS X (10.4.11) on a 50 GB partition, left the remaining 26 GB free, then ran the installer. Everything seems to run very smoothly until it hits this package: sendmail-8.14.3-8.fc12.ppc. Then everything freezes. After this happened twice, I pulled a few applications out, thinking it might be a space issue, but it hung in exactly the same place next time. The install DVD passed the media check at the beginning of the install. Is there a way I could keep this package out of the install and, if it's needed, pull it in from the repositories later?

I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I've recently come across a problem concerning the Package Installer that's stoping me from installing; whenever I try to install Package Installer pops up an error stating that only one software management tool is allowed to run at once. However whenever this happens it's the only visible tool open. No "update manager", "aptitude" or anything else. I've tried looking through the list of processors, but I can't find this other mysterious management tool it's complaining about.

Code:
$ xmonad /home/adx/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux: executeFile: does not exist (No such file or directory)
X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major opcode of failed request: 2 (X_ChangeWindowAttributes) Serial number of failed request: 7 Current serial number in output stream: 8 I figured I left out a flag on the make file or something, so I tried the slackbuild packages next; however, the same error was present at launch.
