i m trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop from usb it hangs when booting so i cant even install it and if i try a diffrent flash drive does nothing but the odd thing when i use unet-bootin it boots up but i get an error on the install Note: i am on 64bit os and my only option is usb

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
As most of us know when you start the machine with the Install Disc in the drive you get a menu that reads:
Welcome To Fedora 15!
Install a new system or upgrade an existing system
Install system with basic video driver
Rescue installed system
Boot from local drive
Memory test
But when you try to boot the install DVD on and EFI based Mac...you only get
Booting Fedora 15 in 3...2...1 ...and then the system hangs.
If any users are having trouble with Fedora Install Media...you can usually use the Install Media from a previous release! In this case, I used the Fedora 14 (64-Bit) disc to install Fedora 15 by simply replacing the 'F14' with a 'F15' in the URLs of the Install and Update repository dialog boxes.
I have a Dell Inspiron M5030 and ran the live Gnome CD. everything works until I install. The install goes fine and it boots fine but when i log in it just hangs at the desktop with a spinning cursor. No menus no nothing just the wallpaper?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded OpenSUSE 11.2 to 11.3 today using Zyyper on my laptop. Everything went fine with no errors whatsoever. At the end, a message was displayed at the terminal asking me if I want to see the notifications. I pressed "Y" and the system hanged there and then. I had to do a hard reboot. After reboot the system booted fine but hanged at the desktop with no response from the keyboard, mouse, touchpad, etc. The situation's same after many reboots. System boots fine but hangs at the desktop. Screen resolution changed to 800x600.Only power button works! I use it to log off and then do a reboot.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI requested a Live CD from ubuntu. when it arrived i booted from it to try Ubuntu without installing. i booted from the live CD for about 5 times. now when i want to install Ubuntu it just hangs when the booting screen appears (when its written Ubuntu and 5 dots are flashing behind the word) now i dont know what is the problem, i have also tried a different CD-ROM but same result. the CD is new/ scratch less but it just wont boot. hangs up all the time. Now i dont know how to install Ubuntu. 1- i can make a bootable USB. i downloaded the ISO and made a bootable USB with Universal USB installer, set my computer to boot from removable but that too didnt work. 2- or i can write my own cd. i will do that but i just wanted to find out why the CD doesnt work after working for 5 times.

But there is no countdown for a default boot. It just hangs here. Indefinitely. Until I make a choice by pressing the enter key with "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" highlighted (default). I don't know if this is because the VM may not have been shutdown properly or what the case is, but this is unacceptable as I need these systems to continue to boot and get back on line regardless of the reason they were powered off.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
Process and problem description:
1. downloaded ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and burned to CD.
2. re-booted.
3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).
4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.
5. cd activity light stops blinking.
6. no standard desktop ever appears.
System:
- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3200+ CPU
- 2.5GB DDR 333 MHz memory
Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.
I'm running Maverick on an Acer AO521 netbook. I've got a k125 processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series video card.Since upgrading to 10.10 with the new version of gnome my computer has started getting stuck on blank screen when booting the GUI. Not every time, but most times i boot.If I boot to command line through GRUB there's no problem. When I try to run gnome from the command line i get the same problem.
View 8 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. upgraded from update manager. System would not boot. Booted live cd and used the 9.10 menu.lst. Now boots but takes a long time. I don't know much about the kernel. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.

I have tried to install fedora 10 in "virtual box 2.1.4" but the result is same.
I have Fedora 8 and it was working without any errors, during the shutdown some messages error appears ... I joined a company as an IT staff 2 months plus back. I now encounters a problem that the booting up hangs at the time when it is starting domino services. I have no clue where to look at and duno where to start checking. A little description of the server. : It's a lotus notes domino server for employees webmail service. -> Now it is down. it's an external dns server: recently high volumes of query cache denied surfaces. it's also our proxy server. The only way to get it up and running is to turn off domino service. The system is running still with high volumes of queries I last checked.
Althrough it can boot up now and DNS & proxy are running, I couldn't access the system anymore. It will hang when I attempt to log in from the command prompt. Below is an illustration:
iasaix login: root -> I attempt to log in using root user
password: xxxxxxxx -> I keyed in my password
-> The cursor comes down and just keeps blinking and nothing happens.
Remote access is not possible as it has sshd disabled by default. Our employees cannot access their webmail now, which is a major issue.
For the first time, I booted up a Kubuntu live CD on a laptop (850 MHz, 40 GB HD, 256 MB RAM). Earlier releases (< 9.04) boot up fine but it does not. It hangs up right on the splash screen and I can view nothing but a blinking cursor on the console screen. The screen hangs when the loader reaches about 10% in the blue bar. No further information can be provided when there is just a blinking cursor at the console. The CPU shows no activity. The CD boots up fine on other computer. How do I go on installing Kubuntu? Is it a good option to use the Ubuntu Server CD and install all the Kubuntu desktop software on it once it is installed (Server edition is not live disk, and I do not have an alternate install CD)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to make a live usb drive with persistents and so far I have used win32DiskImager to write the debian-live-8.1.0-i386-gnome-desktop image to a usb drive. (im using a windows machine to get this set up) and it all went fine. The problem shows itself when i boot from the drive however. it boots fine and i select the live option when prompted. then i get the debian loading screen and once it finishes loading both my screens turn to garbled static and it just hangs there.

It hangs. Anyone know how I can get around this?I managed to boot into the desktop by switching the desktop effects from by using an alternative GUI. But it begs the question, desktop effects worked fine in 10.04 and 10.10 on this PC. Why not 11.04?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi have been using opensuse 11.3 for 3 weeks now, last night i tried installing Ati drivers and i did a google search and i got this ati.ymp file from http://opensuse-community.org..after installing that, i got a frozen screen but the cursor moves and behind i can see a dim image of a bug reporting window, but I cant do anything except move the cursor around. i did a restart and now when i leave my PC and come back after like hr hr or so the same thing happens.

my computer hangs as soon as i boot into ubuntu 10.04 LTS GNOME. nothing works and i have to press the reset button.i don't face this issue with ubuntu 8.04 LTS. my comp works fine with linux mint 7 GNOME but it hangs when i try install mint 8. i have tried to work with windows xp. things seem to be alright. but not with latest ubuntu and its variations it just HANGS..I am on a mercury 945 series motherboard and i have 2 gb RAM.
