I'm trying to create a Windows XP VM using VirtuallBox, and creating/formatting the disk goes OK, but when it's actually running setup it hangs only a few minutes in. I'm using VirtuallBox 3.1.10 on Ubuntu 10.04.

I am planning on playing with the lynx on VirtualBox for a while just to do some test and maybe update my installation notes before moving everything but just can't get it to work.
Environment details:
OS: 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-21-generic
Machine: Compaq Presario B1200, 3 GB RAM, 14 GB available disk space
VirtualBox: VirtualBox OSE 3.0.8_OSE r53138
Problem: After starting up the virtual machine and reaching the purple screen (where a keyboard and accessibility icons are displayed at the bottom part), everything just goes black with an un-blinking cursor on the top-right. I already tried recreating the virtual machine, removing and creating a number of times, and I've also tried reinstalling VirtualBox but the problem still persists.
I recently installed VirtualBox 3.1.8 r61349 from the deb file virtualbox- .1_3.1.8-61349~Ubuntu~lucid_amd64.deb onto a recent clean install of Lucid Lynx on my HP p6210f (6144 MB RAM, AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU). I then imported a friend's VM and tried to boot it. The VM consistently hangs with the following showing on the console (this is the last 3 lines, for context):
NetLabel: protocols = UNLABELED CIPSOv4
NetLabel: unlabeled traffic allowed by default
NET: Registered protocol family 2
I thought initially it was a problem with my friend's VM, so I decided to create a new VM from scratch, and boot from a CentOS-5.4-i386-DVD instead, which I have done before with previous versions of VirtualBox. When I do that, I'm able to select my installation method (so I know it's booting from the CentOS ISO), and then it hangs at exactly the same point. I couldn't find any other mention of this problem, but it's a pretty recent release of VirtualBox - I think just days old.
The VM: OS Type=RedHat (presumed 32-bit), 1 processor, 1024 MB RAM

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
Trying to install Ubuntu (tried several releases) on HP Pavillion Pentium 4 Proccessor 515 2.93 Gig 1M L2 cache 533mhz 90nm . Have 1 gig ram and 1Tb hd. Hangs on initial install screen for ever. Tried versions from 8.10 (origional disk) to 11.01. Machine works perfectly on Windows XP but who wants that? The model is pavillion 1000 system number pl397aa.

how to install Sun VirtualBox? I have tried it three different ways and it fails on all. When I use the terminal to install it, the terminal fails to install any of the required packages. Have researched, but to no avail. It would be nice if there was just a single (maybe .deb) file to install. Sheesh, installing software in Ubuntu is so complicated!

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Windows XP on VirtualBox, using an external USB CD/DVD drive. VirtualBox boots to the CD/DVD and goes through the first part of the installation flawlessly. After XP restarts from the HD, however, it can't complete the installation because it can't find the files at "D:I386asms". (In fact, it doesn't seem to be able to access the CD/DVD drive at all.) I'm just guessing, but could this be because of how VirtualBox handles USB drives and/or because (if I recall) XP lacks native support for USB?
Hardware and software specs:
--Lenovo ThinkPad X201
--Asus SDRW-08D1S-U external USB CD/DVD drive
--Ubuntu 10.04.1 64-bit (kernel 2.6.32-30)

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030 and ran the live Gnome CD. everything works until I install. The install goes fine and it boots fine but when i log in it just hangs at the desktop with a spinning cursor. No menus no nothing just the wallpaper?

I've got virtualbox running on 10.04. I install windows xp on it and everything goes smoothly. I installed it from an iso of XP, however, on the very first boot it says "Windows could not start normally" and gives me the option of safe mode, networking, or starting normally. This would save disk space, improve learn the OS better and also gives the freedom to mess around without worrying too much. Can anyone tell me how to install a simple version of Ubuntu 8.04 (that's the distro I choose since it requires lesser RAM than the current version) in virtualbox in text only mode? During the installation there doesn't seem to be a choice in installation modes. If not, should we install the OS normally and change the run levels afterwards to boot in text mode?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm on Fedora 14 and tried to install virtualbox using yum install virtualbox It seemed to install but wouldn't run and I got messages saying there was an issue with it not recognising the kernel. I used the Add/Remove software function and added the right kernel but on reboot it didn't complete the boot up process. I get as far as the loading progress bar being fully loaded but don't get to the login screen I've tried loading earlier kernels to no avail - the same issue.
I can access the install via my live CD but I'm not that experienced a user and how to proceed. My guess is I need to remove all the Virtualbox components but I don't know how from where I am.
