I have a problem with a network printer: every document I try to print it goes in the printing queue and there its status stays "pending" forever. Where could be the problem or where can I find clues to solve it?
View 1 RepliesSometimes I want to keep something in PDF files, so I print to the PDF "printer". However, if I inadvertetnly forget to check the PDF creation and rather take the real printer (which is usually only powered up, when I really want to print something), printing goes to the real printers queue and nothing happens ... until, possibly some sessions later, I want to print something (on paper rather than PDF) and power up the printer.
Then all inadvertent garbage comes first and chances are big, that the printer gets junk during power up or reconnecting the cable to the computer and then the whole thing is wasting even more paper, since escape-sequences sent to the printer get chopped and misunderstood by the printer.
In order to stop this alltogether, I am looking for a mehtod, to automatically flush the whole printing queue every time when I log out of my ubuntu session.
I know, there is a command lpq to tell which print jobs are pending, I also know the command cancel -Umyname -a, but this requests for my password. I want to kill all those incomplete or pending print jobs automatically.
And how do I hook such a command script into the logoff or shutdown sequence?
Our one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

After downloading and viewing a PDF, when I try to print either the current page or a page range, it insists on printing the full document. I could not find this bug documented anywhere. For example, a 12 page booklet made up of A4 folded in half to A5 -
1st page = 12 & 1
2nd page = 2 & 11
3rd page = 10 & 3 etc.
So that when it is printed double-sided it comes out as a booklet. The site at the following link does what I want perfectly if I upload the booklet in single pages format, but it would be nice to have a simple way to do it offline in ubuntu [URL]

"Failed to print document
Printing is not supported on this printer."
I need to check if I've printed a document. For what I've been reading, going on [URL] and clicking on "Show completed job" should do what I need to do, but it says "No jobs".

So I am cleaning up some old paper records from 2009. I scanned about 25 pages of old medical receipts, prescription receipts etc. as a multi page project. The destination was a pdf file. The desired file is created and I can open it in the default Document Viewer. When I try to print to my Brother HL5170DN laser printer (just one page as a test) I get a message in the print queue window:

com.apple.print.recoverable
and the job never prints. I can print pdf files from other sources such a printing a web page to a file/pdf, pdf files downloaded or created on other computers etc.
If I print the pdf created by XSane and viewed in Document Viewer to the MFC 240c ink jet printer, the pages are about 3/4 size, not the full size pages I scanned.
I am forced to do my scanning and pdf writing on an XP virtual machine running on the Ubuntu box under VMWare
I have just installed a Canon Pixma iP2200 on Fedora 14. The installation 'seemed' to go OK but whenever I try to print anything I get the following error:
"There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'."
I have done a bit of searching and the only advice i could find is to uncomment some lines in /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.types but I don't have either of those files!
The printer prints with ubuntu live cd. I deleted the printer from the list and I followed the instructions here. When I tried to print, sometimes it shows that the documents was printed (but my printer is standby) sometimes it shows the document failed.

how to get xsane to scan a document and have it display as a full 8.5x11 sized document instead of something half that size? I've been trying and trying and can't seem to figure it out.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have one of my Red Hat 5.4 box connected to the RHN and I managed to download and install selected files and updates. Lately, it has stopped doing so. I can go to the RHN webpage and select/apply the uppates I chose. But when I run the command "rhn_check", all I get is this

The updates are not installed and RHN shows that update as "Pending". I am not sure which log file I can dig into.
I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
I have been forbidden to enable automatic updates on our Ubuntu servers, for both security and regular packages.When I log into any of my four Ubuntu servers, the welcome message contains this:

26 updates are security updates.
However, when I run the Nagios plugin that monitors APT, I get:

I need to know how to properly detect that there are pending security updates, and regular updates. Once I can do that, I plan to write a Nagios script that will return WARNING for pending regular updates, and CRITICAL for pending security updates.
I have a heavily used file server that I want to restart, then if it requires e2fsck's on any volume to run them after it restarts. The only problem is that the server is rarely rebooted, and they said it might kernel panic because its been so long. I've heard there's a way to have it go past the kernel panic if it does happen, but I'm not sure how to do that or the other stuff.If it was a Windows server, I would schedule a shutdown with the force switch, and have the chkdsk's already scheduled for each volume on reboot. But for RHEL, I really don't know.I'm hoping this can be done, so that way I can have it kick off at say 7am, then when I get in at 8am it will probably be near the end of the e2fsck's so I can see what's going on.

If there are more connections that are waiting, can we make the server accept all the pending connections? I wrote a loop like the following:

Doesn't seem to work. A related question, more a clarification, is as follows. My understanding was that a connect() at the client returns only when accept() in the server returns. Clearly, I was incorrect. Even with no accept() call in the server, my client was able to connect and send data. Am I getting this right?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI didn't realize my system drive had filled up... and TaskWarrior overwrote my 'pending.data' with a 0-byte copy. d-: I had worked SO hard to get all my tasks imported from various other notes (many of which I deleted along the way), and hadn't yet prepared for the possibility of data loss. Should've set it up to use my Dropbox...why doesn't TaskWarrior make ANY backup buy default? That data is so important, and yet so small and trivial to backup. Anyway, my 'undo.data' is totally intact and seems to contain all the information theoretically needed to reconstruct 'pending.data'. Unfortunately right now I have no sample 'pending.data' to look at. d-: OR: does anybody know of a simple Linux utility I can use to recover previous file versions? It's possible no data was overwritten, since the replacement is empty.
