In the Ubuntu Software Center I find two applications that seem to fit the bill. I need to know which is better or are the complimentary.
I am using itunes on Windows to listen to different radio shows and I am interested if there is any application in openSUSE that can automatically read the link to the podcast as it is present on apple's page.I found a way to play the podcast thru Amarok but I had to convert somehow the link from apple to some xml that Amarok can understand. I'm thinking maybe if there is something more straightforward.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing.For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings.So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to connect an ipad to a windows xp virtual machine running in a linux (opensuse) host machine. VMWare reports that usbmuxd running on the host machine (opensuse) must first release the usb port so that vmware can open it in the guest (XP) vm. VMWare knows that I have physically connected an ipad and when I click "Connect" reports the error and then displays the port as "Connected" although according to ITunes diagnostics there is no such connection. I have the same problem connecting a usb flash drive to the guest vm. Is there a way I can manually disconnect the port from the opensuse host?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.
Here is what i want:I want to import from Windows XP all cookies and bookmarks i use in Firefox in to Suse.I can not start windows as the hard drive is damaged, i was able to copy the cookies and favorites as well other important data from Windows.The question is how to use this data in suse, can this be just copied into the Firefox directory?If possible what is the path to put all this info?

I installed Crossover Office Pro (full release) which I used on previous version of opensuse, but now it is installed on opensuse 11.4 64 bits. The installation is fine, but the problems begin when I try to launch the application to install windows software.
I get this output:

I just installed openSuse11.3 on my desktop, but when I switch on my pc, windows starts aumatically. I can run openSuse only if I insert installation cd, select BOOT FORM HARD DISK and then Grub appears...I have a problem also with screen resolution, I installed nVidia drivers, but the maximum resolution is 1024X768...

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there an actual How-To or something like it about sharing data between linux system(s) and MS Windows XP?I do not think there is a golden path but maybe a list of possibilities and their pros and contras would be fine. As I understood there are different ways of sharing data (and so of setting the partitions)
1. Accessing the data of a MS Windows (NTFS) partition from a linux system (contra: possible data loss/data corruption?).
2. Accessing the data of a linux (ext3) partition form a Microsoft system (XP) (contra: possible data loss/data corruption?).
3. Sharing a data partition (FAT ?) (contra: problems with large files).
4. Visualization (contra1: If the main system gets broken, the guest is broken, too?; contra2: not so easy?; contra3: windows male ware in linux?).
I am thinking about reorganizing my hole system of sharing data and of partitions (including my NTFS partition for XP data and FAT partition for data shared with XP and linux).Now I am using mostly a FAT partition for sharing data but this seems to me not the way (for big files and especially because of data security).
I thought of making my /home partition bigger and use a windows program to get excess to ext3/ext4 from MS XP. I also thought of deleting my hole NTFS data partition and use only /home with document-folders etc. for each user / for the linux users and for the Mircosoft users. But this seems not so wise jet from I have read (at least not with an ext4 data partition):

I am new to opensuse, having migrated from Ubuntu. I have had some difficulty with power management on Ubuntu so i decided to install opensuse with kde as i heard it was good for laptops. I have had lots of trouble getting opensuse 11.4 to boot properly and to run without freezing.
I have trawled the forums and bugzilla and the documentation, e.g. SDB:ATI - openSUSE and SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE. Consequently i am now able to boot (normally), however whenever i open any application, e.g. Dolphin file manager, Firefox, etc, the tab starts to load (little circle starts spinning on the tab), and then it freezes.
At this point I can exit X Windows and enter the text mode. I have repeated this with the FGLRX and Radeon drivers running. This is always repeatable. I can also boot into level 3 and do things there.
My computer details are:
HP Pavilion dv6 3032TX
Processor - Intel i7 720 QM
Ram - 6GB
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon 5650
Harddrive - 640GB 5400rpm

1. First 4 steps on SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
2. Install and run FGLRX
Note that i cannot failsafe boot - it never boots into X Windows and just hangs. I really do like the look and feel of opensuse and would love to use it, but at this point my only option is to try another distro.
I was wondering if someone can help me... I have a file that I am trying to LFTP from my Linux server to my Mainframe and the file is uploading but the data looks slightly corrupted..First off let me tell you the following text is French and it contains accent characters.Below is how the data looks when you view the data through vi or on the Mainframe:

Note how the accent e is turned into a uppercase accent A and a copyright symbol.When I view the PC file in hex through Notepad ++ the turns into and the result is one character turning into two characters is a hex C3 and is a hex A9.
When I LFTP the file to the mainframe the characters are transferred and I end up with a hex 66 and a hex E4.The end result I am after is that I want to transfer my linux file, who's data looks like this on the linux server: factureNumro and like this when viewed on a PC: factureNumro to my mainframe and I want it to look the same as when I transfer it to the PC. Like this: factureNum.
I am using kvkbd as an onscreen keyboard and I have it set to start on the login screen but after I login I want the keyboard to close and I can not get this to work. At the bottom of /etc/gdm/Init/DefaultI added the line.Code:exec kvkbd&This works great and kvkbd starts up and even puts a panel icon at the bottom of the login screen but after the login the keyboard is still there?I have tried making a launcher and adding it to the startup applications. I wrote a script and put it in the /usr/sbin and /usr/bin and also added a line at the bottom of my /etc/rc.local that should have run that same script to kill kvkbd and nothing. The really weird thing is that the launcher that I made would work if I double clicked on it but if i had it set to run as a startup application it would not work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI work from home writing web content, and need the use of an article spinner tool called "The Best spinner". It is an .exe file and I installed it in my Mint Debian edition machine using wine, and everything is fine except for one thing. The app opens out, connects to the net, and then closes automatically. In fact if I check on the internet activity, I can see the app downloading the latest version, but the problem is that always it closes within a few seconds leaving me no other choice other than to log into a windows machine to work on it.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the app a couple of times but it does not seem to have helped. It requires the .net packages in winetricks, and I read that wine does not support net very well, yet the app is installed and even connects to the net. I don't understand the underlying process of how windows apps work in wine. Any work around considering that I never log into windows for anything other than using this app, a workaround means that windows is gone forever from my life.
If I send data via scp, will scp automatically verify that the received data matches the sent data? I can do it manually with md5sum, but is that necessary?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 15 with dual monitors. I want to make an application open automatically on the second monitor. In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?
I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.
I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.
I set up a data project to burn a bunch of files onto a CD. I want to backup the files. I went to edit > plugins and selected "File Checksum" and set it to SHA1. Will Brasero now automatically (as part of the burning process) calculate and then compare the SHA1 for the file on the HDD with the file that is burned to the CD? If the two SHA1 comparisons do not match then Brasero will kick up a dialog window alerting me? Do I understand how this works correctly? as long as the plugin is enabled this is all automatic? Is the "Image Checksum" plugin only in use when I am burning an ISO?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAm I the only person who can't get ubuntu one working properly?1) if I right-click a folder and ask to synchronize it to ubuntu one, there is absolutely no feedback at all (nothing seems to be synchronized, no icons are added to the folder, no progress bar, nothing).2) if I open the Ubuntu one preferences, it states "synchronizing in progress", and it keeps doing that. again; no progress, no icons, no nothing.Disconnecting reconnecting doesn't seem to matter.Rebooting (I know, I was desperate..) doesn't seem to matter.How do you guys manage to use this. I mean, the interface of ubuntu one is pretty clean, so there is not much to configure, which is good, if it would work out of the box .
