Ubuntu :: Firefox Process Takes Forever To End?

Jan 14, 2010

I'm running 9.1 and Firefox 3.5.7 with a few addons (better privacy, ghostery, cookieculler, adblock, personas) on a HP 8710p laptop with 4gb of ram.I use it to browse the internet at work, and I have it up for about 8-9 hours every day, during the course of the day I will open and close tons of tabs. At the end of the day when I'm getting ready to leave, I close out of firefox, and it takes one of my duo core processors all the way to 100% and sit at the top of my processes in my Conky for 5-10 minutes before it finally closes. I've been googling for a couple days and have yet to come up with anything,

Fedora Installation :: Shrinking Of Windows XP Takes Forever In F14?

Apr 9, 2011

I hope somebody can find a solution for the following problem: I tried to install fedora 14 from the life cd on a Dell 6400 with windows XP already installed on it. During the installation process I wanted to shrink the ntfs partition of windows. The actual used size of the windows partition was well below the one I shrinked it to. But the shrinking takes forever ( + 7 hours ) and is still running, which does not seems normal to me. Any recommendations on how to proceed ( solve ) the problem? Processors are running at 99%, so it seems to perform some work. Can this process be cancelled, without harming the windows?

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Ubuntu Installation :: Flash Player - Video Streaming Seased - Wouldn't Load It Stays Searching Forever

Jan 20, 2011

I have been using this thread for a couple of days and just getting exposed to the vast world of ubuntu after succesfully partitoning the hard drive through a live cd. (a copy of linux for dummies book)So naturally after getting adjusted to the new os I started seeking for downloadable media and applications.Started with flashplayer last night and installed after watching some videos. But when I tried the same thing with vlc through the terminal command; sudo apt-get vlc

The video streaming seased because they wouldn't load it stays searching forever! Now ..... doesn't work.I am afraid that by tampering with the command it also affected the flash player file. This is an ethernet connection , 100 mb/s, netgear router.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Takes Almost 2 Minutes To Load?

Jun 29, 2010

Title describes the problem rather well. After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!

Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo @ Canonical.

But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT.

Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out)

EDIT: I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume.

Code:
acpi-supportinstall
acpidinstall
adduserinstall
adium-theme-ubuntuinstall
aisleriotinstall

Ubuntu :: Panel Takes Ages To Load On Login With Lucid

May 30, 2010

On Lucid, using the nVidia proprietary drivers, the panel takes about 15-20 seconds to load after loging in. Everything else works fine, I can use my desktop shortcuts and open other programs, just the panel leaves an empty space at the top and bottom, until it loads.

I don't have this problem on a laptop with Intel graphics running Lucid, nor when using Nouveau drivers on this computer. I read somewhere that it could be due to gdmsetup not having it's config file, but even after trying the suggested workaround (opening gdmconfig and changing settings so the config file is made) the problem persists. If I run "killall gnome-panel" the panel disappears (not surprisingly) and then briefly pops back up before disappearing again for about 10 seconds.

Could this be something to do with Compiz? With the Nouveau drivers Compiz is disabled, so Compiz is the only thing I can think of that affects the panel differently between the two graphics drivers.

Debian :: Logs & Apache Load - Takes Up So Much CPU For Some Of The Requests

Mar 30, 2010

I noticed i have quite a few logs that end with .[number] for example "syslog.1" "mail.info.1" etc, why is this and why are they there since almost nothing is logged in them ??

Question 2: on my server im running a script like imagebam and imageshack with hosts images so i have quite a few apache requests to my server. I am wonder why apache takes up so much CPU for some of the requests? in Htop some requests take up 1.2% CPU while other take up 3-5% etc, so the total load is about 1.50 0.58 0.84 to 2.61 1.08 1.14 with about 128-150 apache requests all the time while sometimes the CPU load can be almost 0 with the same ammount of requests. is this normal? what could cause this in apache ?? the server is just running apache2. MYSQL is running on another server.

After installing Ubuntu, it boots normally about once, and then the next time I try to boot, I have to wait a few minutes with it saying "GRUB Loading." I have read other threads about this that say that it is clearly a GRUB2 problem, and something about Windows overwriting something with the MBR; although I haven't booted into windows once in the process of installing Ubuntu (multiple times) or afterward. Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox 5 Takes All Available Memory

Jul 22, 2011

a few months ago i did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 64-bits. it works perfectly. i'm using firefox 5.0, and in about it says mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0.

every now and then, firefox behaves like a runaway train and starts using up all available memory, and using 100% processor time. this has been going on for a week or so. the only remedy is to kill firefox and restart it.

i'm not sure what causes this problem, but i am starting to suspect that it may be caused by flash, java, or some other plug-in or add-on that i have installed.

my add-ons are:
- adblock plus 1.3.9
- adblock plus pop-up addon 0.2.7
- delicious bookmarks 2.3.1
- delicious extension 2.3.1
- flash-aid 2.1.1
- global menu bar integration 1.0.6
- memory restart 1.4
- stumbleupon 3.91
- ubuntu firefox modifications 0.9.1

with the exception of memory restart 1.4 all these add-ons have been installed for a long time, without ever causing any problems. the problems started before installing memory restart.

my java version is icedtea, installed from the repository. i'm frequently using sweet home 3d (a java program) that runs without any problem. it doesn't make a difference whether i have sh3d running or not, the ff problem occurs regardless.

i also have installed ubuntu restricted extras version 43. videos videos don't cause problems. vimeo videos cause problems on occasion when switching to high definition and/or to full screen, but that is a known vimeo problem.

the problems certainly start when i don't use my computer for a longer period of time. i have disabled the screen saver/energy saver, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. today i had the problem shortly after visiting a website, reason why i'm starting to suspect that the problem could be linked to some plug-in that website uses.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Takes 30 Second To Start , Used To Be Instant / Resolve This?

Oct 16, 2010

My Firefox used to start instantly, or at least near instant, but since yesterday it took about 30 sec to launch. Opening subsequent windows is near instant, but once all windows are closed it would take a long time to open again.

When I open it up in a terminal, it has absolutely no error message, clean start up and shutdown.

I turned up the CPU clock speed from 1.2GHz to 2.0GHz and it doesn't seem to help. Other programs starts fine too, so I kind of ruled out performance issue.

Yesterday I also tinkered with compiz settings and also installed the cairo dock and some media codecs. But I can't pinpoint when does it happen exactly, I also struggle to draw any relationship if there is any. And if it matters Firefox is 3.6.10 and Ubuntu is 10.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10, Takes 30-45 Minutes For Installation/Live Environment To Load. Install Slow?

Apr 27, 2011

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.

After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.
