I hope somebody can find a solution for the following problem: I tried to install fedora 14 from the life cd on a Dell 6400 with windows XP already installed on it. During the installation process I wanted to shrink the ntfs partition of windows. The actual used size of the windows partition was well below the one I shrinked it to. But the shrinking takes forever ( + 7 hours ) and is still running, which does not seems normal to me. Any recommendations on how to proceed ( solve ) the problem? Processors are running at 99%, so it seems to perform some work. Can this process be cancelled, without harming the windows?

There seems to be only one X- or Y coordinate on the screen where I can pick the side of the window, it seems to be only one pixel wide. I'm trying to boot windows 7 on virtual box, but it seems to demand quite a bit of memory. The "recommended" amount is 512MB, and upon checking my kernel only has 488MB total ram with not much room to spare:

I've tried giving the virtual machine memory sizes in the area of 192-256MB, but that's way too much and the system locks up and aborts from it. Memory sizes in the area of 128MB is just too small and it throws an error that there just isn't enough ram to boot. So the only thing I can do to make this work is to increase the size of the ramdisk for my host OS so I can give more to the virtual machine (not to mention things like flash animations are horribly slow and I'd like to see them get more fluid).
I see that I have 16 ramdisks available to me:

I looked at some guides here and there, but apparently my setup isn't quite the same. I don't have a menu.lst file in boot/grub, and I don't have a grub.conf file anywhere. So I don't know what file I'm supposed to edit for this.
I set my swap partition a bit high and now want to shrink it down and possibly merge it with one of my other partitions. I don't have dual boot, just have a second partition on the drive for data. Can I merge these easily?

But I have a slight problem. The cadidate popups are TINY on my 1080p 15" screen. I have to get right up to the screen to see the characters.

I have reformatted my hard drive with allocation size 64K for a better performance on my WDTV HD media player(dealing with large files). When I mount this drive on Linux, the mount tells me that "blksize=4096".If I keep writing files usinghis default etting(blksize=4096) to my NTFS formatted hard drive, will my WDTV be able to benefit from the performance improvement of 64k allocation size ? Should I try and mount my hard drive with a larger blksize ?I did some research on google but couldn't find an option to increase the blksize when mounting an NTFS pre-formatted drive.

I'm having issues changing the canvas size. I'd like to overlay two graphs and hence I wish to extend the canvas and shift one graph up and the other down and perform an overlay. Everytime I attempt to change the canvas size I run into issues with the canvas not being able to extended to twice the height. I am changing the dpi values. Anyone know a smart way of doing this? I am changing through the print setup options.

The console font size is too big for me, and honestly I don't know how to change that. Coming out of Ubuntu, I'm realizing I don't know as much about config files as I think I do :P
Any way I can change the font size? When I use the GParted live cd, I see a line in the start up that mentions changing the frame buffer to 700 x 48 or something, I'll get specifics soon (computer's not on me) and it makes the font and everything just how I like it.

I would like to get more storage space out of this drive since it's only use is a backup mirror of the ntfs drive.
I think that drive size might be related to something else.
My laptop has a 60GB hard drive, which my ex-husband set up with a 20GB partition for Windows XP and a 40GB partition with Suse 11, which suited me fine at the time. However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.
how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!

I would like to install Ubuntu on an HP Laptop, but they have taken up the whole disk with 4 partitions. I have removed Linux partitions and made an extended one in it's place creating new UUIDs before, but i am worried that windows will not recognize the new partition.

I will be using a window and then when I switch to another window it will randomly crash and it takes me ages to be able to close it down, sometimes I can never close the window down. This has stopped me from being able to use any version of Ubuntu on my computer which is disappointing because I really love Ubuntu.
I have no idea how to fix this issue at all, I have downloaded drivers for Linux from the Nvidia website but I get a window saying it cant be opened, and no surprise after many efforts I can't even close that window. Its a .run file so I don't know if I have to run it via terminal? I am fed up of not being able to use Ubuntu because these windows freezing is making it unbearable to use.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.
