As i played with compiz configuration, just for fun i changed the profile from unity to default. Then i cant see sidebar and search and all. only i can see in the desktop is my wallpaper!! How can i restore back?

but how do you add to it? I'd like to add Terminal, Calibre and some other things to the sidebar for easier access.
I would also like to move Google Chrome to the top of the bar, instead of the middle.

With other applications, I can launch them, right-click the application icon in the sidebar and select "Keep in Launcher", however Google Chromium doesn't appear to have this option. Does anyone know how this can be achieved?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI see many people are a little uneasy with the new desktop of Ubuntu. I think it's marvelous, though... Not because of a reason other than just that a change after a short while is always good.
So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.
This time since the unity desktop has come with a nice sidebar, I'd like to put the same icon there, in the sidebar. But I can't even access computer as Computer:/// anymore... What to do?
I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.
The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.
Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.
Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?
Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with Unity on 11.04. I had installed Gnome 3 just to see what its like and kind of play around with it. I didn't much care for it so i uninstalled it using ppa-purge. It uninstalled, i rebooted and loaded up Unity. It loaded fine but the side bar/launcher/whatever was back to default, with just frefox, libre office, and ubuntu one on it. So i put all my programs back on the launcher (chromium, vlc, clementine etc.) and everything was fine. Until i rebooted, and the sidebar again reverted to default. Every time i turn my computer off and then back on, the sidebar goes to the default programs (but stays the smaller size i changed it to using compiz). No idea why or how to fix it, but it's only happened since i uninstalled Gnome 3...so i assume that has something to do with it.

On the admin profile we have set up a terminal window for editing or adding users.We have created a second user with no admin privileges which we want to make the default on start up. This account is set to auto-login and takes them to a generic screen with just one icon to select and do anything with. I need to make this user the default on start up instead of the admin account as we do not want users knowing there is anything else available.When using the $ :users-admin in the terminal window to build the other account I have no option to make one or the other default. Is this done from the command line or is there another way of making this happen?

I wondered if it would make a big difference in graphics (nothing was wrong just curious is all) and downloaded the script. I ran it and there was only one listing for an ATI driver. I installed it and upon reboot I a notification pops up in place of my desktop. It says something about having to use low-res. The thing is it won't even use low-res. I get a box with three choices on it. Use the default, create a new profile, ***something else I forget*** and none of these logs me into desktop.
I blindly checked through some of the boxes and saw some logs. I'm using my dual-boot to type this message. This is on my R51e that has an ATI X200M card. What do I do?
EDIT: So upon reading some threads it seems I will most likely have to reinstall the OS? Am I allowed to throw a temper tantrum here???
I implore anyone who knows how to remove that 8.66***some other numbers*** driver and go back to the default one! I don't think I'll be mucking around with these types of things again!
Where does Firefox 3.5.7_64 keeps it's bookmarks on Ubuntu 9.10_64 bit.
I want to replace the default set with my Seamonkey_32 bit set from My Windows7_32 bit profile. I tried to import them but Firefox reports no "Program that contains bookmarks...." exists. Before doing this I mounted the Windows partition.

Immediately after the change it seemed to work fine, but when I rebooted all the icons on the desktop, my personal data and themes account settings were gone.
I got an error that there was a problem with a file in my home directory. (I think .ICAccount or s.th like that) I don't remember the correct name, because I bypassed it using chmod 755 on my home directory.
No I dont get any error message but the files in my home folder and all settings are still gone.
There is a README.txt in my home folder:

I can mount it by using the command but that doesn't fix the settings problem and the data that was previously stored on my Desktop doesn't apper. I also dont want to have an encrypted home directory. I didn't use that before. I'm using the whole disk LVM encryption that I applied using the alternate installation cd.
How do you set Gnome as the default desktop instead of Unity. Unity is nice but I'd like to use less memory at the top.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had this computer for a few days. I was playing around with it trying to get the multiple desktop cube.I wanted to restore it back, however every setting had dependencies with other settings so now my unity interface is unusable.the problems are
-no taskbar and no lancher
-some keycommands don't work(Ctrl-alt-t no longer opens a terminal, it used to)
-can't log off
how do i restore it to factory settings I messed it up using CCSM or whatever it's called
I've already gotten into the .mozilla folder and found the profiles.ini file. My windows XP system has it's Documents and Settings folder on a seperate drive (D:Documents and settings) And I've located the profile (application datamozillafirefoxprofiles) Now all I need to do is put the path into the profiles.ini file in the .mozilla folder in Ubuntu. The problem is I don't know exactly how to format it.

I'm a Windows user, but now trying to migrate to Ubuntu. I have read AppArmor Docs/FAQs, and very impressed with it's possibilities. But I'm still not sure, can I have a profile which is applied to all applications I run (not listed in other profiles)? That would be great to have a "Simple Application" default profile, with permissions, say, to read/write to app's folder and to display graphics/play sounds!
