Ubuntu :: Launcher / Sidebar Keeps Reverting To Default - Sort It?

Jun 16, 2011

I'm having a problem with Unity on 11.04. I had installed Gnome 3 just to see what its like and kind of play around with it. I didn't much care for it so i uninstalled it using ppa-purge. It uninstalled, i rebooted and loaded up Unity. It loaded fine but the side bar/launcher/whatever was back to default, with just frefox, libre office, and ubuntu one on it. So i put all my programs back on the launcher (chromium, vlc, clementine etc.) and everything was fine. Until i rebooted, and the sidebar again reverted to default. Every time i turn my computer off and then back on, the sidebar goes to the default programs (but stays the smaller size i changed it to using compiz). No idea why or how to fix it, but it's only happened since i uninstalled Gnome 3...so i assume that has something to do with it.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Panel And App Launcher Sidebar Not Loading Upon Login / Fix It?

Apr 29, 2011

I just updated from 10.10 to 11.04 about an hour ago and I've already managed to crash it. (currently running from my old 10.04 Live CD)
the first restart from the update worked fine. i had a look around and tried to orientate myself to the new dash etc.
this is where the problem comes in.
All i did was open the control center and have a look at the new Unity and Gnome 3 settings etc.
My computer froze and so i had to force shutdown and restart.

I then discover my two main problems.
- the new grub menu/splash screen is displaying at too high a frequency for my monitor to display (if i wait long enough it loads 11.04's login screen by default.)
- upon login, all i can see is my desktop background and my cairo dock from 10.10 but nothing else. (no panel or app launcher side bar)

Ubuntu Installation :: Desktop Quirks On Upgrade To 10.10 - New 'unity' Sidebar Launcher Supposed To Replace The Old On-screen Menu?

Oct 10, 2010

Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Reverting To Default Video Drivers

Jun 17, 2010

When Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.

Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.

There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.

But now that I have installed it I'm not getting sound on the desktop and in wine.

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher - Restart Compize To Default Setting ?

Aug 6, 2011

I have played a little of the compize config. Apparently I change something in the setting of the unity launcher. What happen now is that when I resize a windows to be on all screen, I seen big thick black line where the unity launcher is suppose to be. When I move the mouse toward the left side I see again the unity launcher.

Is there anyway to restart compize to default setting. Or at least how can I set it back that I wont see that ugly line.

Ubuntu :: Change Default For Opening Mounted Volumes In Unity Launcher?

Apr 29, 2011

I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.

The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.

Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.

Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Icons - Changes Icon To Springboard Default Icon That New Launchers Use

May 1, 2011

I've installed Office 2007 under wine, and would like to add launchers for Word, Excel, etc to the Unity launcher bar.

So, I've created a launcher on the Desktop that will run Word with wine. I've changed the icon to the Word Icon and everything works great from the desktop. If I drag that launcher to the Unity bar, it adds it, but changes the icon to the springboard default icon that new launchers use. Please see attached picture.

As a side note, I am really starting to like Unity (puts on flamesuit), but it seems very easy to break the install of 11.04. I've had to reinstall 4 times now.

Ubuntu :: Pin Apps To The Sidebar?

I've been searching all over ubuntu-land the last two hours for anything about configuring Unity and I'm coming up a little short. Can anybody point me to some documentation that I may have missed?

I figured out how to pin apps to the sidebar, but I'd like to configure the "Favorites" folders and just see what other options can be customized.

I would have thought right-clicking (anywhere) would have helped, but I get nowhere.

Ubuntu :: How To Remove The Sidebar

Is this possible without reverting to Ubuntu 10.04? And if not, can someone tell me how to revert to Ubuntu 10.04? A picture of the sidebar I want removed is attached.

Ubuntu :: Reverting 10.04 To 9.10?

May 26, 2010

Way to revert my 10.04 (2.6.31.21) to 9.10.

<rant>10.04 has been a disaster for my Acer laptop. NVidia must hate Ubuntu because any time I try to load into 2.6.32.22, the damn thing black-screens and dies. 2.6.31.21 "works", but I get flooded with errors related to the generic nvidia drivers. And I've specifically NOT installed the proprietary drivers because I know from past experience that they kill my computer, regardless of which Ubuntu version I use. Plus 10.04 is just... why did they change everything? The default color scheme makes my eyes bleed, and even the close/minimize/maximize buttons are in the wrong place. But that's minor... The real problem is that my graphics capabilities are shot to hell, and since this is a computer used for work-related image processing, I need 9.10 back.</rant>

Reinstalling from disk is not an option since any install disc (alt or otherwise) newer than 8.04 fails. (A fresh install of 9.10 involved installing 8.04 => 8.10 => 9.04 => 9.10) Is there a simple apt-get type command I can use to revert it?
