View 2 RepliesHow do you set Gnome as the default desktop instead of Unity. Unity is nice but I'd like to use less memory at the top.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI constantly work on several workspaces, and whenever I open an internet browser or anything, I'd like a new instance of the program to open. The default behavior takes me to the workspace that currently has an open browser, and this page is usually already very crowded. Can I override this default behavior on Unity?

-no taskbar and no lancher
-some keycommands don't work(Ctrl-alt-t no longer opens a terminal, it used to)
-can't log off
how do i restore it to factory settings I messed it up using CCSM or whatever it's called
As i played with compiz configuration, just for fun i changed the profile from unity to default. Then i cant see sidebar and search and all. only i can see in the desktop is my wallpaper!! How can i restore back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have played a little of the compize config. Apparently I change something in the setting of the unity launcher. What happen now is that when I resize a windows to be on all screen, I seen big thick black line where the unity launcher is suppose to be. When I move the mouse toward the left side I see again the unity launcher.
Is there anyway to restart compize to default setting. Or at least how can I set it back that I wont see that ugly line.
I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.
The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.
Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.
Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?
i have lost my setting of unity desktop and launcher is not seen on desk top as well as search barwhich use to come on pressing of meta window key.
how to restore launcher and search bar setting or u may say default unity setting
I've installed Office 2007 under wine, and would like to add launchers for Word, Excel, etc to the Unity launcher bar.
So, I've created a launcher on the Desktop that will run Word with wine. I've changed the icon to the Word Icon and everything works great from the desktop. If I drag that launcher to the Unity bar, it adds it, but changes the icon to the springboard default icon that new launchers use. Please see attached picture.
As a side note, I am really starting to like Unity (puts on flamesuit), but it seems very easy to break the install of 11.04. I've had to reinstall 4 times now.
Since i've touched the "set back to defaults" (or the like) in compiz configuration manager (CCSM), unity does not appear after logging in. I'm stuck with a complete blank screen, with my wallpaper and an mouse pointer. I have attempted the following:
- restore unity by the steps in askubuntu.com: unity --reset
- reinstalled unity packages
- created another account, to see if the user configuration was the problem
Another hint:
- Ubuntu classic with effects shows my screens outside of the viewport and i'm unable to use them
- Ubuntu classic without effects operates properly
Environment: HP Compaq 8710p, Nvidia Quadra 320M, Natty 64bit updated to 4 may 2011, Unity 3d
I have my Unity desktop just how I like it, but sometimes I like to log in to the Gnome (Ubuntu Classic) desktop. However, I was playing around with CCSM while in Gnome and I've totally messed it up, I have the Gnome panels and also the Unity launcher, it's a total mess. Is there a way to reset my Gnome desktop to default without affecting my Unity desktop?
View 3 Replies View Related1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?
Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
1. What is actually UNITY? is it the "default desktop" when i installed ubuntu 11.04?
2. If not, then how to use this UNITY?
3. Is there any way to get 3D effects in ubuntu 11.04?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
[code]....
I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
How is it possible to change the default text that is displayed on the default BASH logon (attached)?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm helping a friend with his netbook, and he is used to the regular netbook edition before the unity-style. The small netbookscreen is just not good for this new appbar on the left side (it's one of the old eee-pc's).
None of us like that solution, and I wonder if its possible to move the bar on the bottom side of the screen so it will be a bit more Windows 7-ish? I've searched and looked everywhere so I just have to ask.
Anyone tried to install Unity on Laptop i.e. normal desktop Ubuntu version.. Not the Netbook remix...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed the netbook remix 10.10 on my laptop. I have been using Unity and I would much rather prefer a standard GNOME desktop. I know there was a way to change the netbook interface to a standard GNOME one on the 8.04 remix. Anyone know if there's a way to do it in 10.10?
