Ubuntu Installation :: Desktop Quirks On Upgrade To 10.10 - New 'unity' Sidebar Launcher Supposed To Replace The Old On-screen Menu?

Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.
I am running Maverick Meerkat now, and will think about upgrading to Natty next week. I have a question--I run GNOME as the environment now, and if I do upgrade, will Natty replace it with UNITY?
If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?
I'm trying to put in an extra command on my skype.desktop launcher to make my webcam work properly, however whenever I add the ff. to the Exec line:

A week or so ago I upgraded from UNE 10.04 to 10.10 and I can't stand the Unity interface, mostly because the full color icons on the left are really distracting.
How do I either
a) switch back to the old UNE interface (preferred)
I just updated from 10.10 to 11.04 about an hour ago and I've already managed to crash it. (currently running from my old 10.04 Live CD) the first restart from the update worked fine. i had a look around and tried to orientate myself to the new dash etc. this is where the problem comes in. All i did was open the control center and have a look at the new Unity and Gnome 3 settings etc. My computer froze and so i had to force shutdown and restart.
I then discover my two main problems. - the new grub menu/splash screen is displaying at too high a frequency for my monitor to display (if i wait long enough it loads 11.04's login screen by default.) - upon login, all i can see is my desktop background and my cairo dock from 10.10 but nothing else. (no panel or app launcher side bar)
I'm having a problem with Unity on 11.04. I had installed Gnome 3 just to see what its like and kind of play around with it. I didn't much care for it so i uninstalled it using ppa-purge. It uninstalled, i rebooted and loaded up Unity. It loaded fine but the side bar/launcher/whatever was back to default, with just frefox, libre office, and ubuntu one on it. So i put all my programs back on the launcher (chromium, vlc, clementine etc.) and everything was fine. Until i rebooted, and the sidebar again reverted to default. Every time i turn my computer off and then back on, the sidebar goes to the default programs (but stays the smaller size i changed it to using compiz). No idea why or how to fix it, but it's only happened since i uninstalled Gnome 3...so i assume that has something to do with it.
For some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.
I have just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10. I am trying to work out how to add Chromium to the Unity Sidebar. With other applications, I can launch them, right-click the application icon in the sidebar and select "Keep in Launcher", however Google Chromium doesn't appear to have this option. Does anyone know how this can be achieved?
I see many people are a little uneasy with the new desktop of Ubuntu. I think it's marvelous, though... Not because of a reason other than just that a change after a short while is always good.
So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.
This time since the unity desktop has come with a nice sidebar, I'd like to put the same icon there, in the sidebar. But I can't even access computer as Computer:/// anymore... What to do?
I've got a Dell d420 with 2gb of ram and a 80 gig drive in that's running Lucid. I've been using Ubuntu on it for several years now and I started with Feisty on this laptop and have only upgrade using the LTS releases.First and foremost it works. I love ubuntu, but I've got some serious annoyances that are driving me nuts. I'm in Uganda with limited resources and internet that's bandwidth capped so I don't have all the tools I'd like to have. I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
As i played with compiz configuration, just for fun i changed the profile from unity to default. Then i cant see sidebar and search and all. only i can see in the desktop is my wallpaper!! How can i restore back?
Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher? What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
Just did a clean install of 11.04.Is it possible to adjust the unity launcher speed?When I take my cursor to the left it takes a while to show up. I'd like it to be immediate.
I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.
If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).
I just upgraded to 11.04, and it put in this frigging windows 7 looking launcher instead of my nice neat "start' menu. I can't find anything, and it forced an upgrade to that piece of *&()&^( interface that is firefox 4. get my nice functional desktop back instead of this launcher crap?when they change something without warning that it will work differently.

How can I edit/add Main Menu items for this Unity Desktop?Additional Details:I edited the Menu Item from 'System>Preference>Main Menu' but change is not reflected in Unity Desktop Item and Default Menu List of Application is displayed.
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

I'm running a ubuntu lab, and adding an rdesktop launcer to the login screen would really make login much easier for the users, so they don't have to login twice. First into lucid and then into windows with rdesktop.
I'v already made the rdesktop launcher on the lucid desktop, but where (if possible) do I put it so it will also be avalible in the lucid login screen ?
So, supposedly Gnome Shell is available through synaptic. I just downloaded and installed it and then ran gnome-shell --replace. It doesn't work at all. I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".
I have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop. I'd like to be able to dual boot into Windows or Linux on my PC so I've installed in on an ext4 partition on a separate drive from Windows. The installation process ran smoothly and the dual boot functionality works as planned. The problem I'm having is that after logging in, the login window disappears (as does the options bar at the bottom of the screen), and then nothing else appears, just the mouse cursor (sometimes the loading icon, sometimes not) and an empty background image, no icons, no menus. It doesn't matter how long I leave it for, nothing ever happens from this point on. I am technical, however, unfortunately ,I'm very new to Linux (something I'd like to remedy) so I'm a bit stuck with what to try next.
So I saw there was a button on update manager that said new version available. I say what the heck, I'll upgrade. I am (was) using 9.10 netbook remix. After I did a few tweaks with synaptic etc to get the upgrade to go through, I am left with no launcher, and an error popping up saying cannot load applet GNOME-GoHome (or similar).
Did the automatic upgrade thing just install desktop 10.04 over my 9.10 NBR?
How the heck do I fix this? Should I burn an ISO of 10.04 netbook and attempt to upgrade from there?
I cannot lose the files that are on this partition, I have access to them currently and would like to keep them available.
I am trying to install the non-free NVIDIA drivers. I have read the guide here [URL] but what they didn't mention is what to do when you have a graphics card that isn't supported in Debian Lenny's repo driver version. I have the GeForce GTS 250, which isn't listed under the 173.14.09 (the stable repo version) supported VGA cards list. The version I need can be found in Sid and Squeeze (195.36.24 currently). If I add the Sid repository, it seems to work but it returns a whole lot of other unrelated package updates and its really annoying since I don't want to change to Sid yet. So how do I keep the rest of my packages under Debian lenny with only the minimal amount of packages to be under Sid.
I tried APT pinning once but the standard '*' won't work unless if it's alone in the 'Package' line. To clarify, a line like: Package: nvidia-* would get ignored. I would also need a list of required packages and dependencies that must be installed from Debian sid to get this to work. The documentation for APT didn't help much. I can usually get around this problem by using the NVIDIA way but then I can't boot into Gnome GUI at all under other kernel versions except the one I compiled it for, unless I use the terminal to restore the Xorg stock drivers.
