Ubuntu :: Overriding Default Behavior In Unity?

Jun 14, 2011

I constantly work on several workspaces, and whenever I open an internet browser or anything, I'd like a new instance of the program to open. The default behavior takes me to the workspace that currently has an open browser, and this page is usually already very crowded. Can I override this default behavior on Unity?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Overriding Rm's Default Behavior

Jul 16, 2011

Within the last few weeks, I've been beginning to familiarize myself with Terminal. I know within the syntax, you can add options such as -i or -v.When I enter the command rm, I want Terminal to automatically go interactive (which would be the -i option) without me having to add it to the command. Meaning, I'd rather type rm Test.doc than having to include -i like this rm -i Test.doc. This way, whenever I execute the rm command, I won't have to worry about adding the -i option because I know that Terminal will automatically ask me if I want to delete the file or not before I do.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - Unity Upgrade Inconsistent Behavior

Jun 4, 2011

I installed Ubuntu two ways, both by partitioning the hard drive and installing Ubuntu in its own partition, and also where the "run within Windows" option was available. I then upgraded both to Ubuntu 11.04. When I start Ubuntu in the "own partition" installation, Unity runs without complaint. When I start Ubuntu in the "run within Windows" installation, Unity baulks, giving an error message that I don't have some (unspecified) of the hardware it needs to run, and I am kicked back to the classic Ubuntu control screen setup. Obviously the two ways to install Ubuntu don't result in it having the same behavior. Alternately, since the version installed to "run within Windows" seems to do no such thing, and also gobbled up almost all the free space in my Windows-7 partition without prior warning, any clue how to uninstall that version cleanly?

Fedora :: PulseAudio USB Device Default Behavior Wrong

Feb 8, 2010

Based on my experience with external devices such as USB microphones and USB speakers, PulseAudio always defaults to the motherboard/built-in device rather than any USB device. My expectation is that if someone is using an external USB device to supplement what is on the motherboard/built-in, they are going to be doing that to overcome a limitation of the motherboard/built-in devices, and therefore it is logical that when external USB devices are present on a system, these be the default. (For example, I want sound from my beefy set of Logitech USB speakers and not from the tinny notebook speakers).

It is no problem for me to manually set/reset the active device, however I believe that the average user expects to plug in a USB microphone or speakers and assume that the system will automatically change the default. Furthermore without this action, some users not used to the Linux audio settings will be led to believe that the USB devices are not supported, when in fact it is simply a problem that they have not been selected for use rather than the motherboard/built-in devices.I think this warrants me entering a bug report, but I wanted to hear what others think before proceeding to enter a bug report. Is the default behavior of PulseAudio towards USB devices wrong? What do you think?

What happen now is that when I resize a windows to be on all screen, I seen big thick black line where the unity launcher is suppose to be. When I move the mouse toward the left side I see again the unity launcher.

Is there anyway to restart compize to default setting. Or at least how can I set it back that I wont see that ugly line.

Ubuntu :: Change Default For Opening Mounted Volumes In Unity Launcher?

Apr 29, 2011

I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.

The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.

Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.

Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Icons - Changes Icon To Springboard Default Icon That New Launchers Use

May 1, 2011

I've installed Office 2007 under wine, and would like to add launchers for Word, Excel, etc to the Unity launcher bar.

So, I've created a launcher on the Desktop that will run Word with wine. I've changed the icon to the Word Icon and everything works great from the desktop. If I drag that launcher to the Unity bar, it adds it, but changes the icon to the springboard default icon that new launchers use. Please see attached picture.

As a side note, I am really starting to like Unity (puts on flamesuit), but it seems very easy to break the install of 11.04. I've had to reinstall 4 times now.

Since i've touched the "set back to defaults" (or the like) in compiz configuration manager (CCSM), unity does not appear after logging in. I'm stuck with a complete blank screen, with my wallpaper and an mouse pointer. I have attempted the following:

- restore unity by the steps in askubuntu.com: unity --reset
- reinstalled unity packages
- created another account, to see if the user configuration was the problem

Another hint:

- Ubuntu classic with effects shows my screens outside of the viewport and i'm unable to use them
- Ubuntu classic without effects operates properly

OpenSUSE Network :: DHCP Overriding Static Setting?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm maintaining a very modest network at home, with OpenSUSE as OS on the server. I got the DHCP and routing working by following the instructions in the wiki. However, every time I run dhclient on the server/router, it appears my own DHCP server assigns an address to the internal network card despite the fact I specifically assigned it to be static using Yast. The situation resolves itself when I restart the network services with the command /etc/init.d/network restart. Otherwise no problem, but it also seems the internal network card gets a "new" IP from my server every time the external card requests one from the ISP. This is more of an issue.

Fedora :: 14 - Overriding Power Management Preferences - Settings Are Set To Never Put The Monitor To Sleep

Nov 17, 2010

I have an odd problem since preupgrading from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14.

My power management settings are set to never put the monitor to sleep, yet after a certain amount of time, lo and behold, the Fedora box has gone blank and I have to enter my user information and password to get back to my gnome session.

In the power management preferences I have "never" selected for both putting the computer or display to sleep.

In the screensaver preferences "Lock Screen After" is *not* checked. (And if I click "advanced" I also note that "Power Management Enabled" is also *not* checked).

I'd just as soon not have to "log on" to this machine every time I'm away from it for a while.

Networking :: Route Type Unreachable Overriding Local Packet Generation For Marking Packets

Jun 16, 2010

My issue is with linux routing tables using iproute2, coupled with the iptables MARK target. When I create a rule to lookup a table with iproute2, and the routing table routes an address as type unreachable (or blackhole, or prohibit), if a higher priority rule does a lookup to another table that routes the address as type unicast but that higher priority rule also matches on a fwmark, the packet to that address is never generated locally to even go through iptables packet filtering/mangling in order to mark it, because the lower priority rule that doesn't match on a fwmark says it's unreachable. For example, I have 2 rules installed with ip:

Code:

10: from all fwmark 0x1000 lookup routeit
20: from all lookup unreach
ip route list table routeit

[code]....

Now, in the packet filter, I have an iptables rule to mark packets to destination 10.0.0.5 with 0x1000 in the mangle table and OUTPUT chain. When I generate a packet locally to 10.0.0.5, all programs get ENETUNREACH (tested with strace). However, if I take out the route entry that 10.0.0.0/8 is unreachable, it all works fine and the routes in the routeit table get applied to marked packets (I know because my default gateway would not be 1.2.3.4, but wireshark shows packets being sent to the MAC address of 1.2.3.4).

The best I can surmise is that when generating a packet locally, the kernel tests the routing tables in priority order but without any mark to see if it is unreachable/blackhole/prohibit, and doesn't even bother generating the packet and traversing iptables rules to see if it would eventually be marked and thus routed somewhere. Then I assume after that step, it traverses iptables rules, then traverses the routing tables again to find a route. So is there any way around this behavior besides adding fake routes to the routing table (e.g. routing 10.0.0.5 to dev lo in the unreach table in this example)?

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
