Ubuntu :: Unity Sidebar - How To Add Items To It
Oct 11, 2010
Deleting unwanted items from the Unity Sidebar is easy.
but how do you add to it? I'd like to add Terminal, Calibre and some other things to the sidebar for easier access.
I would also like to move Google Chrome to the top of the bar, instead of the middle.
So how does one customize this side bar in Unity?
other than not knowing how to customize my applications in the sidebar, Unity is pretty awesome.

I have just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10. I am trying to work out how to add Chromium to the Unity Sidebar. With other applications, I can launch them, right-click the application icon in the sidebar and select "Keep in Launcher", however Google Chromium doesn't appear to have this option. Does anyone know how this can be achieved?

I see many people are a little uneasy with the new desktop of Ubuntu. I think it's marvelous, though... Not because of a reason other than just that a change after a short while is always good.
So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.
This time since the unity desktop has come with a nice sidebar, I'd like to put the same icon there, in the sidebar. But I can't even access computer as Computer:/// anymore... What to do?

Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

I want to modify some of the menu items in Unity to add some startup parameters to existing menu items. How do I do this in Unity? How do I look at the properties of the menu items? Where is this located?

I've been searching all over ubuntu-land the last two hours for anything about configuring Unity and I'm coming up a little short. Can anybody point me to some documentation that I may have missed?
I figured out how to pin apps to the sidebar, but I'd like to configure the "Favorites" folders and just see what other options can be customized.
I would have thought right-clicking (anywhere) would have helped, but I get nowhere.

The left sidebar has been annoying me since the must recent Ubuntu update for Ubuntu Netbook 10.10(?) and I want to know if its possible to remove the darn thing and go back to the old view (or just remove it in general). Is this possible without reverting to Ubuntu 10.04? And if not, can someone tell me how to revert to Ubuntu 10.04? A picture of the sidebar I want removed is attached.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

I've seen a lot of screenshots on gnome-look.org of themes that have nautilus without the ugly sidebar border. However when I install these themes I still get that border.
Example of a theme without the ugly border: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=124462
I've attached a screenshot of my nautilus with a red stroke indicating the border I am talking about.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this?

I installed UNE on my desktop pc just to see what it's like. It starts okay, but whenever i moved my cursor over the left side app bar the entire interface closes and restarts. I therefore can't use the app bar at all. Has anyone else encountered this? Any recommendations?

I am a relatively new user Ubuntu 11.04. I just installed this version and i tried to customize it using Compiz. And after i did that, it appears that i have been zoomed in to my desktop and i can not access the sidebar or even the topbar....furthermore i cant access the terminal or anything to reset Ubuntu. I also do not think that i was giving full admin access when i installed 11.04, i think i have the "Custom" setting/access.

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and the sidebar seems to not be functioning as one would expect.
I removed unwanted applications that come by default and added my own applications by clicking "Keep In Launcher".
After a reboot the sidebar returns to default applications. I did a quick Google search but wasn't able to find anyone else reporting the problem.
Has anyone heard of this happening to anyone else and can you think of anyway to fix it?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

How do I...
* Prevent the sdb1 + sdb2 ext4 partitions from being shown in Nautilus/Thunar Places sidebar.
* Prevent the Western Digital SmartWare VirtualCD, sdr1, from being shown in Nautilus/Thunar Places sidebar. It is just a VCD that is part of the firmware of the external (sdb) hard drive. *GAG!*
I don't care if they are mounted or not, though I prefer if they aren't. As long as they don't show up on the Places sidebar AT ALL, I'll be happy. I never use them, but keep mounting them by accident.
Here's my fstab, can you tell me why it's not doing the above?
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
[Code]....

I'm using Evolution with 11 different Email accounts. They all show up with their respective folders in the left sidebar. How can I change their order? Now, so it seems, the account I entered first is on top. I want the more important accounts to be the furtest up and move some others down. I'm sure there has to be a file where this is stored, no?

Got a really strange one here. Can connect fine to my 10.10 Netbook Remix desktop over OpenSSH & x11VNC.However, I cannot left-click on the sidebar (Unity). For example, if I click on one of the icons (say Firefox), nothing happens. Clicking anywhere else on the desktop is fine.
Clicking on the sidebar icons when at the netbook is fine. Furthermore, over VNC I can click on one of the sidebar icons and drag it, but can't click to open!

I just updated from 10.10 to 11.04 about an hour ago and I've already managed to crash it. (currently running from my old 10.04 Live CD)
the first restart from the update worked fine. i had a look around and tried to orientate myself to the new dash etc.
this is where the problem comes in.
All i did was open the control center and have a look at the new Unity and Gnome 3 settings etc.
My computer froze and so i had to force shutdown and restart.
I then discover my two main problems.
- the new grub menu/splash screen is displaying at too high a frequency for my monitor to display (if i wait long enough it loads 11.04's login screen by default.)
- upon login, all i can see is my desktop background and my cairo dock from 10.10 but nothing else. (no panel or app launcher side bar)

I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my compaq laptop, My Issue is this, the upgrade went well for being over the internet, rebooted, got to the kewl new desktop environment, then tried to enable compiz fusion desktop cube, and darn it if I didnt lose the desktop environment. The pic I installed as desktop background is still there, and the desktop icons are as well, but no sidebar or taskbar/menubar at the top,I dont know if this is a resolution issue, or if unity is the desktop environment then it maybe' isn't enabled?,...
while trying to fix this issue(in recovery mode) I got an error message saying that my hardware doesn't support unity, I do not know if that is the problem or not, everything worked fine until I tried to run compiz fusion, now all I have is a desktop background and icons?? I am still learning the Linux environment and how to do things with the command line

I'm having a problem with Unity on 11.04. I had installed Gnome 3 just to see what its like and kind of play around with it. I didn't much care for it so i uninstalled it using ppa-purge. It uninstalled, i rebooted and loaded up Unity. It loaded fine but the side bar/launcher/whatever was back to default, with just frefox, libre office, and ubuntu one on it. So i put all my programs back on the launcher (chromium, vlc, clementine etc.) and everything was fine. Until i rebooted, and the sidebar again reverted to default. Every time i turn my computer off and then back on, the sidebar goes to the default programs (but stays the smaller size i changed it to using compiz). No idea why or how to fix it, but it's only happened since i uninstalled Gnome 3...so i assume that has something to do with it.

I really prefer Konqueror to Dolphin, but as it is I have six external harddrives that are connected to my computer, and Dolphin has that sidebar that shows all connected storage devices and you can go straight into them by choosing one. This is the sole feature that keeps me using Dolphin, because I use it constantly. Does Konqueror have a similar feature? If it has something thats even remotely close to that sidebar, I'd switch over in a heartbeat. I looked through all the options I could find but didn't see it anywhere.

I have a bit unusual request.
There are three partitions on my hard drive. Two of them were assigned to mount points / and /home during system installation. The third one was left intact.
After installation the first two partitions were automatically integrated into directory tree and there was a shortcut on the Nautilus sidebar for the third one. Then, I registered the third partition in /etc/fstab for automounting at /home/user/Data directory. For now it works fine, the volume is mounted on startup. But I still have the shortcut to this volume in Nautilus sidebar and icon on my Desktop.
I am interested, if it is possible to disable showing of this items on Desktop and in Nautilus to make the third partition look like registered at system setup time.
