Just installed gnome-Shell in Natty Narwhal. the only problem know is that all the icons have disappeared and the theme has gone to a more "basic" look. No matter what desktop session I choose (Unity, Gnome-Shell, Classic) I can't change anything back since the "appearance" menu seems to have been removed while gnome-shell was being installed.

I am missing the bluetooth and power icons (top-right), anybody know how I could get those back?

The system runs fine and stable, but I am surprised to find icons missing for a few applications. They've never been there, like if they are missing from the rpm they are installed from.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.
I've only recently started using Fedora a couple months ago. I used Ubuntu for a few years before. I'm posting because I have a strange graphical glitch in gnome shell. For some reason, this glitch did not appear when I was using Gnome 3 with ubuntu, and I didn't notice it on the F15 Live CD.
There appears to be an artifact (looks like a crack) in my shell. It only appears when the icons fade if I'm scrolled down in the applications menu. Similar artifacts appear in the gnome shell notifications, such as the messaging notifications. I have a ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and am using the default drivers. NOT the proprietary fglrx/catalyst/whatever driver. I've attached a pic.
I'm attempting to play around with Gnome Shell, both in Lucid, and now in the Maverick Alpha. However, when I attempt to install it (from software center), I get an error.
Code: Package Dependencies could not be resolved. This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. Details > gnome-shell What dependency is missing from the repository?
I just upgraded to beta 10.04, & am trying to get GNOME-shell installed. I have downloaded the tar file for it, but when I do ./configure in a terminal, I get the following error messages:
No package 'mutter-plugins' found
No package 'gjs-gi-1.0' found
No package 'gobject-introspection-1.0' found
I already restored regular icons by going to gconf. However, the icons on top right where the "power" button is located, still have no icons. Is there any way to add icons to the hibernate/ shut down , etc words?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used the command "update-manager -d" to put Natty Beta 2 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. It worked perfectly, but took about 7 hours because the SSD is so slow. The upgrade replaces the Netbook Remix of Ubuntu 10.10. Now my desktop is full of icons that weren't there before. They are the files and folders in my home directory. Until yesterday, my desktop icons showed the contents of the subdirectory $HOME/Desktop instead. How can I restore the former behaviour?
The desktop icons are being provided by Nautilus. I know this because I can drill down into the Nautilus options using gconf-editor and un-check the box that makes Nautilus manage the desktop. This makes all the icons go away. So I know how to get (1) lots of icons [the wrong ones] or (2) no icons at all. I'd like an elegant clean way to achieve (3) just a few icons [the right ones]. [My idea of "elegant": some way to inform Nautilus about which directory to look in for the purpose of generating icons for the desktop.]
I want to configure the spacing between the icons in toolbar in the top right tray of Natty (so it looks more like gnome 3). Does anyone know where these values are stored? I checked ccsm and gconf.

(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)
I have a My book usb drive that in the provious install would show up with a My book icon as a "drive" on my desk top, in PLaces it shows as a blank icon.. for some reason the icon does not appear on my desktop, like normal, examples plug in ipod, ipod icon shows up, usb mini drive, that shows up?Also this could be related .. but my Pidgen icon on the tack bar does not show anymore... it used to be that I opened it and a little green icon sat by the clock?

Sometime (once every 4-5 time) when I boot my machine the desktop icons are missing and I have to log out and in again to get them back.
Besides that the systems works fine.
I am running Natty 64 bit with a GTX275 graphicscard and the latest drivers from X updates.

yesterday I upgraded my Fedora installation via preupgrade from 11 to 12.Now there are some icons missing! If I go to the 'System' menu in the panel, there are no icons at all.If then I select the 'Settings' submenu, all of its icons are visible.I figured out that the package redhat-menus and fedora-icon-theme make up the representation of this icons and reinstalled them. Then I additionally executed 'gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders-64 > /etc/gtk-2.0/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf.loaders' (I read this somewhere in the forum).
But nothing happend so far?!
I made further efforts trying to find out the icon of the System Configuration Menu (Syst -> Administration). The file '/usr/share/desktop-directories/SystemConfig.directory' contains the icon that should be displayed for the System->Administration menu. This file contains the line: Icon=preferences-system Good so far.I thought that selecting the gnome icon theme would fix this problem, but this also didn't help!Now I'm at the end of my knowledge (or I don't want to rename single icons to match the names required)...
A couple months ago, I created a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi. I then upgraded to 10.10. What would usually happen is I would start up my laptop and it'll go to the Windows boot manager, letting me choose between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. If I would choose Ubuntu, it would go to a GRUB boot manager. It would let me choose between several different ways to boot Ubuntu, mainly that there were different options that were all the same except they had different numbers in the name, i.e. Ubuntu, whatever, 14.33.22.19.25 or something like that.
A couple weeks ago, I updated to 11.04. At first it worked good, but then a couple days later I updated a bunch of packages. It tried to CAT a GRUB file and failed. It gave me an error code, but I ignored it. Yesterday, I updated again, but since last time failed, it told me to do a partial upgrade. This I did, and it was successful. But now, everytime I go to GRUB and try to select any of the options, it tells me "Error: File not Found" and I cannot boot into Ubuntu. There are recovery versions for each choice, and using these I can boot into Ubuntu in low graphics mode and I can also get to a command line prompt.
My gnome-control-panel (or System Settings) only shows a 'Users' icon, all the rest are gone. I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. I see this if I enter a Unity session, Gnome Classic, or Gnome-Session.Here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

I saw suggestions to disable hardware accelleration by right-clicking on a flash video then going to settings. When i do that it takes me to Adobe's web page and it states that for linux there should be a control panel application to change flash settings. I do not see that anywhere in Natty. When i checked online I see some mention of a "adobe-flash-properties-gtk" but I do not see that anywhere in the repos. I also enabled the partner repo but no luck. How can one change the settings for flash in Ubuntu Natty 11.04?

open firefox, download and install some plugins/addons that generate menu entries with an icon in front of them.
e.g. "downthemall" (down them all)

there is however space for these icons in the menu. and I can see icons in the bookmark and history menus. (web page favicons)
these icons improve the usability greatly because they offer a visual guide to the menu not only to the item they belong to but also to other items because I know that the item I want is e.g. one above the green triangle.
I have a slightly impaired vision so this a far greater issue to me than you well sighted folks may think. Just put on some glasses with lots of fingerprints on them and you will see the difference.
In Ubuntu 10.04 Final in Ubuntu Software Center there are missing icons? Thought it was my desktop computer,but is same on another computer.Will this be fixed soon?

I have checked 'show menu icons' option in Xubuntu settings, and all gtk apps have their icons. Skype is a Qt app however. VLC is also a Qt app, and it's missing its icons, too.
I've just installed the new Ubuntu 11.04 and encountered a strange problem. The Launcher bar appears, everything is ok, but i can see no icon on the Unity Launcher. When i move the mouse over the launcher, it tells me where the icons should be. The apps also open when I click in those places. But NO icon? Can anybody tell me why is this happening? It is very annoying. I would accept it easier if it didn't work at all.. but not this way.
