I somehow lost wicd. the icon is still at the bottom of the screen, but show "no networks present.' When I run iwfonfig as root it shows eth0 and lo, but no wlan0. When i run iwconfig, it says eth0 and lo with "no wireless extensions."
View 10 Replies(Background: my wireless worked fine for a long time using wicd-1.6.2.1 and then all networks became hidden. The wicd website said there was a bug in 1.6.2.1 and to upgrade.) I obtained wicd-1.7.0.tar.bz2 from sourceforge.net. Slackware man pages recommend "installpkg <name>". I did "removepkg wicd..." and then install. Installpkg said it could not install it because it did not end in .tgz,.tbz,.tlz, or .txz. I changed the name to wicd-1.7.0.tbz(assuming that was equivalent) and did installpkg again. That gave "Verifying..., Installing..., Warning: package has not been created with 'makepkg'. Package wicd-1.7.0.tbz installed."
There is no entry for it in the Kickoff Application Launcher. There is an entry for it in /var/log/packages. There is in /etc/rc.d./rc.wicd a script marked executable. Can anyone see what got lost?
I am trying to use nm-applet with Arch/Openbox/tint2. I can't use wicd-gtk because wicd won't work with ad-hoc networks. I have tested nm-applet in Ubuntu/Openbox/tint2 and it works fine.

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?
clean install of 11.3-64 on my 64 bit intel box. have had desktop lockup a few times and did a ctr/alt/bs to reboot the gui. lately, I right clicked on the bar at the bottom of the screen and went to properties. then clicked on "left" for bar position and bar totally disappeared. when I move the cursor all around the screen even on the edges and hit the left mouse button (thought that would bring it back) nothing happens
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was playing around with bash scripting and the last thing I remember doing was checking for suid root files. However now I cannot launch sbopkg, tpfand etc and the binaries are nowhere to be seen. I was experimenting with the sticky bit for tpfand so I could load it as a normal user.

However now tpfand is no long in /usr/sbin. But a whereis produces the following results.

The same applies for sbopkg, which I have not touched. I think this problem is also related to the wicd error stating it cannot connect to DBus client From these symptoms has anybody experienced anything like this before from tinkering?
I long while ago (when I was in collage) I used VIM a bit. I have not used it since and would like to get back into using it. I remember there being a way to split the screen within VIM to show common commands on the bottom portion of the screen. I've searched a while and cannot find how to set this up.

I can recreate widgets and panels but not as the default menu bar at the bottom of the screen. So, now everytime I push something in the background, I have no way to recover it. View 11 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. everything was working fine until i installed firestarter. i didnt like it and uninstalled it. when i did that i lost my wireless signal icon at the top of the screen, firefox starts up in offline mode, and limewire says that network connection is lost. i just want it back the way it was before installing firestarter. please help, i dont want to reinstall ubuntu if i dont have to.

I look over my sources.list and it looks ok, then I check the lspci command and my wifi card is detected by the kernel because is an Atheros card, also I install madwifi-tools.

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have searched online with no success. The brightness control is working fine on my laptop. Problem is that the bars don't get rendered on screen. Instead I get like a static white line on screen everytime I press the brightness control. On boot however, I can see the correct bars. It is once I start my xsession, the bars do not show up. I tried xdg-desktop-icon command. It does install a shortcut. The shortcut works when double clicked. But the shortcut is shown as a standard icon, not the icon defined in the .desktop file. Do I miss something?

Trying this on a Lenovo with 10.04. but after a few updates and some basic software (restricted extras) the network manager is missing. I tried installing WICD but that doesn't show up either. Going to the startup applications, it is listed and checked, and dragging it to the panel works, but clicking it does nothing.

Now that I upgraded to 11.04 the wireless indicator does not show up on the top bar, even though the wireless is connected and working. I have no way to see my connection, or view available wireless connections. I looked through system settings, but don't see any options for selecting what shows up on the top bar.

I have spent hours looking for a solution and tried several different remedies, none of which work.
I select GLSlideshow in the KDE system settings, but there is no option to choose what folder I want to use. I have to open xscreensaver to do this. However, I don't want certain sub-folders being used and I can't seem to be able to blacklist those folders.
