View 9 Repliesrecently I have installed a brand new machine with 11.2. Machine boots so incredibly fast so I decided to upgraded another older machine from 11.1 to 11.2. Upgrade went fine but old machine boots significantly slower. On new I see message "doing fastboot" and few seconds later KDE starts loading. Amazing. On old I just experience regular boot, speed is comparable to old 11.1.What am I missing after upgrade? Same kernel, almost same set of services. Both machines are pretty regular PCs/x86_64, however old one have faster/better hardware (more cores, more GHz, more RAM, 2 disks in software raid-0).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to version 11.4 and now I can not install any application. Not YAST or zypper downloaded RPMs.Firefox and Konqueror can not download links that are rpm. I do not understand what happens. Ties other than rpm, if fully discharged. I tried as root and nothing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.
I just installed kernel version 2.6.26-rc2.5.1, but "uname -r" is still giving me 2.6.36-rc2-5-default. Am I booting with the new kernel? How can I tell? If not, how do I create a new boot option?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds
View 9 Replies View Relatedupdate from 11.1 to 11.2 is good but I can't find any way of setting a timed autosuspend to disk. It used to be in kpowersave but that doesn't seem to be available. Is it simply a case of waiting for an 11.2 version to appear? Would the 11.1 version still work? The other thing is that the task bar icon for switching desktops is missing and despite a lot of searching I can't see how to get it back.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHad v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.
Boots up with:
Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.
Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

I have just upgraded to Natty but since doing so the Wicd icon is missing. Everything is working ok, connection is as it should be but I would prefer to have the icon showing that I am connected to my network.
I have spent hours looking for a solution and tried several different remedies, none of which work.
I was working just find and the "Computer" GUI that is located on the panel that lets you have access to all CPU options went missing.. I understand I can hit F2 and get them listed but I need it back on my panel strip at the bottom of the desktop!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded my Kubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop with KDE 4.5 using the kubuntu ppa backports. I am impressed with the overall visual and performance improvements. However I am facing the following issues after upgradation -
1. When I execute any application as root user (using kdesudo <app name>) they load with a primitive GUI. I have attached a copy of the dolphin application loaded as root user (kdesudo dolphin). Not sure how to restore the latest GUI for them. I tried running systemsettings as root user and tried to customize the theme little bit. But not much has changed
2. One new short cut for ExpoBlending has comeup in section Graphics. I am unable to execute it, since it has multiple missing dependencies, neither able to uninstall it.
3. I installed kpart-webkit and configured it using keditfiletype utility. Now while browsing certain websites such as facebook(after loading farmville application in facebook), I can see few dummy popup windows. Attached file contains one such screenshot.
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I upgraded to ubuntustudio last night while I was sleeping, and when I woke up this morning and restarted the laptop the sleek desktop environment was gone. I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE a couple of weeks ago but didn't use it until 2 days ago. It was the latest version when I installed it.To my surprise there wasn't a gcc or pppoe installed. Or at least there wasn't a command line begging with ppp.I tried to install them both with rpms. I think I got them both, just they don't work very well. In particular rp-pppoe doesn't work at all. It says that there's no modem on eth0, which is very true there's only a eth cable. gcc seems to work but I'm not sure I installed all the dependencies.I can't use yast because of lack of internet. I have to reboot to windows and download rpms. Can you give me a work around? At least for the pppoe then it might fix itself. Can I have some EXACT links to rpms or another solution?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an acer travelmate 632 running 11.3.The grandkids have been playing playing frozen bubble in fullscreen mode but the "full screen" was actually only the central part of the monitor.Yesterday, there were a bunch of updates. Today, the kids again played frozen bubble but this time, the "full screen" was really the full screen, not the sub-window. After exiting the game, a window popped up telling me that a monitor had been disconnected and would I like to reconfigure. I said yes.
After reboot, the graphical login failed saying that a serious error had been encountered and that I should consult the KDM logs. I went to console mode but was unable to log in. Neither as root or as the regular user. Both fail with "Login incorrect". In fact, the only way in now is via single-user mode.
Looking through the /var/log/messages, I see a curious set of mesages complaining the, for instance, "/dev/sda4 is not in PARTITIONS" note the upper-case. I then see that, despite what "mount" tells me, ?home (sda4) and /boot (sda1) are not mounted. That is, I cannot list their contents. If I manually mount those partitions, I can list their contents.

I've seen a few other posts well over a year or 2 old about hal.dll missing, and windows not dual booting with grub, but all of those involved resizing or moving partitions. This install i just did of opensuse 11.4 only involved formatting over a Ubuntu partition which already ran and dual booted windows xp with no problem (no problems during ubuntu install) I am hesitant to try any previous fixes posted in the forums as my issue doesn't seem to have come about for the same reasons. I thought windows and linux were playing well these days, guess not.
