I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

I have 2 ubuntu servers, one is running 9.04 and the other has been upgraded to 9.10 but the 9.10 server no longer browses or connects to the windows network, but the 9.04 server sees the windows network fine. I have checked the smb.conf file against the 9.04 server which has the same configuration as the 9.10 server. It's strange that the 9.04 version server is working perfectly and the latest version 9.10 is not.

I'm trying to get my computer connected to the internet at work. how to set up a connect in ubuntu or any other Linux system. So I'm completely on my own. I went into windows to get my IP address, subnet Mask, gateway address, and DNS server. I put these in using sys>admin>network>wired connect | dns. Nothing works. I went to Network Tools and tried to ping the dns server and another address given from the Ubuntu help menu. Nothing. In network tools, I see two options under devices, loopback interface and ethernet (eth0). I can't do anything with loopback and it has the standard 127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 showing (shadowed). So i skipped that and then clicked on the ethernet option and the "configure" button becomes active. The ip and such that I put in seem to be showing there, but when I click on "configure" I get something like "The interface doesn't exist". the network proxy setting is "direct internet connection". Seems that since I can connect when in Windows, I ought to just be able to get all the information I need and set it all up in Ubuntu. Maybe I don't have enough info from Windows, and maybe I'm not putting things in the right places in Ubuntu.

I am trying to share files on my Windows XP Home machine over my P2P network to my Ubuntu netbook. The folder I wish to share is configured in Windows with public permissions. I go to the Files & Folders > Documents and then I click on Network in the Places tab. A Windows Network icon appears, but when I double click it I receive the error message, "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server."

So, I'm trying to set up a network with my windows netbook so the Ubuntu comp can access the internet through the netbook's wireless. Finally got the network set up, but can't access the internet on the Ubuntu comp. Also, the Ubuntu machine can recognize and access the files on the netbook, but the netbook only sees a computer named Owner-a6012abd6 which asks for a password.
The netbook is running Windows XP SP3, with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter(internet) and an Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. The Ubuntu comp is running Ubuntu 9.04.

I am able to see my windows computers (vista and xp) but I am not able to see the linux computer with those machines plus I would like to change the network name of the linux machine if possible. Please any help and information will be much appreciated. Eventually I would like to server a printer from this linux machine to the other windows machines.

I have a beefy Win Box desktop that i'm using as a media server and i have a home network setup already using windows xp. I had everything running fine and the PC connects flawlessly to my Bravia TV and both my ps3's so i know the network and sharing settings are setup just fine. Anyways i got tired of all the Windows 7 BS and decided i would once again use Ubuntu on my Toshiba netbook. So the question is how in the heck do i get my Ubuntu netbook to connect to the Desktop? I've tried browsing the fourms but either i'm missing something of just a little slow. What "extensions" would i need to get and how would i go about implementing it from there?

I am trying to configure MPD (music player daemon) to work on my headless ubuntu server. Everything works well, but MPD cannot see the music files stored on my windows XP main computer. These files are stored at smb://LASTNAME/share/music Is there a way to directly mount this drive, so it is accessible at something like /mnt/music, in order that they work with MPD?

`I'm on 10.04 trying to access shares on a windows machine. The machine does not appear at all in windows network/workgroup. I can see these shares when I'm on my windows partition so I know the problem isn't with the network.
Code:
sudo aptitude install apache2.2-bin apache2.2-common libapache2-mod-dnssd

When I was on Windows I used to be able to connect my laptop to a printer that was plugged into the computer downstairs via the wireless network. This network is still in place, only now I am using ubuntu I haven't got a clue as to how I connect to this network,or if it is even possible at all! how I would go about printing over the network when the other computers on the network are all windows machines.

I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.

I'm not sure this has anything to do with Samba because I can see and access the ubuntu share files that I share with windows still. I can't see the windows network share files though. If I switch back to my private IP the windows network comes back. How I can get the network to show on my public ip.

I have a Actiontec m1000 modem from Qwest that seems to offer more speed to my brothers Windows PC then my Linux PC (same make and module) I checked the ping on all systems, and they all look fine. The only thing that seems different is the number of open sessions in the modem, Linux only uses 2, and Windows uses 80. My guess is that the modem uses sessions to control the bandwidth, but I don't know how to add sessions to Linux networking to compete for bandwidth. I did test in the same browser.

I've looked at all 250 threads that come up when I search "Windows network password" and can't seem to find the answer. On my win7 box, when I try to connect to an Ubuntu share on my ubuntu box, it asks for username and password. I have tried my ubuntu username and password, the windows networking password, and my win7 user account name and password, and I cant get in.

I noticed tonight when I go to Places, Network, it will bring up an icon for Windows Network, and I can drill down to my Windows box. But I can't see the other Linux box (a laptop running Kubuntu), and the same behavior occurs on the laptop when trying to view the Linux desktop. The laptop is connected wirelessly, if that makes a difference. Each box can ping the others, but I don't yet know how to browse one Linux box from the other Linux box.

I am new to Linux and decided on trying out Ubuntu. Love it so far. Running Ubuntu 64-bit 10.04 on a Toshiva Satellite L300. Network browsing worked fine to both my other machines (one running XP, the other Win7). The next day I switched the laptop on, the other two systems don't show automatically in the File Browser under Network like they used to. It now only shows a Windows Network icon which, when I click on it, gives the following error: Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server. I can access the machines' shared folders perfectly through the terminal using smbclient.

When I double click on the "Windows Network" icon right now, I get "Failed to retrieve share list from server". Sometimes this works and I get to see the shares on the Windows pcs.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop. So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed. After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo. With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .

A friend came by, and we tried to log her on to our wifi network when she was having trouble accessing it with her Windows (Dist #) machine.he wifi network itself was set up with macs, and had standard, open settings as far as I could tell - no password, NETGEAR title of the network. The Windows computer prompted us for a Security Pin, which we gave it from the router, and then all of the computers already on the network got dropped, while the Windows machine got set up onto the wifi, renamed the network with its own username, and automatically set up a password.I'm currently on the network using LAN, but can't figure out how to set up the network through Ubuntu back to the original settings for the rest of the people that need to access the network.Specs:I'm running Ubuntu 11.0,The Windows machine is unknown right now. I'll repost if that will help. The wifi router is a Netgear Wireless N 150 WSR 1000, with the serial, mac, and security pin numbers.
