Jan 11, 2010I remember back when I used Windows, there was a shell command call "net view", which would allow me to see all the other users on my wireless net.
Is there any command or application that can do this? I dont mind if it is a terminal command either, but I would really like to know a way that I could see other users on my network.

Mar 25, 2010up until about four days ago connecting to the local LAN was as simple as booting Ubuntu, and letting nm-applet automatically connect on Auto Eth0 But the other day it just randomly stopped working, with no cause that I can think of. I can still connect to the internet (This is via a PPPOE connection, running through the same wired interface) so it can't be a hardware problem with the ethernet port/cables themselves. nm-applet just stays spinning in circles, and nothing ever happens. I tried deleting the auto Eth0 entry, and creating another LAN entry with exactly the same settings, but I still get the same problems. way to completely restore nm-applet settings? Or some other way to give me access to the local network?

May 3, 2010I Have Ubuntu 9.10 Server installed and for some reason after updating our server with the ubuntu update manager, we can no longer connect to the network via remote desktop, let alone not even able to ping. We are actually able to connect to the internet itself just fine so I dont understand why this isn't working

mount -t nfs 10.0.0.1:/home/usr/file /home/usr/tmp I get the following error : mount.nfs: No route to host
And when I try to rpcinfo -p 10.0.0.1 I get the error :

Sep 15, 2009I have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.
It is running Ubuntu server 8.10
The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.
My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.
I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.
Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.
Networking :: Windows 7 Users Can't Connect To Samba Server After Dhcp Config
Jun 27, 2011I have an ubuntu 11,04 samba domain server, I want to also configure this machine to work as a dhcp server, however this have give me some issues with te windows 7 workstations, my guest is that it have something to do with the iptables because those station do join the samba domain went both server and workstation are conected to a router.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Cannot Browse Windows Network Or Connect To Windows Shared Folders
Dec 22, 2010I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

Jul 24, 2010I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

This was really anoying and has happened before sp yesterday i decided to install some kind of WEP cracking tool so that it would not happen anymore.. and started following it. i only got to the point where he has updated his computer using update manager and is about to patch his wificard. Then i noticed that the network manager for gnome was gone and the virtualbox logo in my top panel was changed to a red circle with a line running through it. I have tried to download network manager from another computer and installing it on my laptop but it needs internet to install. Then i tried to connect to my local network using terminal that did't work either i also tried connecting using a cable but had no luck connecting. The command iwconfig gives me:

May 16, 2010I'd like a way to see all of the devices on my local network and what their local IP address is. I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. (I'd like to do this without having to physically interface with my router if possible, and I am in an encrypted network if that matters)

Feb 14, 2010I have a network of 5 Windows Machines and 1 Linux Server. I created a Filemaker Pro Database on a windows machine and share it with the other machines through web publishing (only locally). - On any Internet browser, they only have to go the IP of the computer hosting the database - http://192.168.1.99:120 to enter & use the database, and all the other windows machines connect perfectly.
However, when I type the same IP(+port No.) into Firefox on my Linux computer, it can't reach the windows computer with the database (It just times out). Is there a firewall preventing it from connecting to other computers on the network, or do I need to update firefox or run another Internet browser or install Samba? I don't have much experience with Linux, as a programmer set the server up for me, so a simple solution with as little programming as possible would be fantastic.

I am attempting to connect to my Windows Computer via a wired network on a sky router. When I tried with PClinuxOS it configured automatically. With the latest version of open SuSe 13.1this is quite a bit different. I have got as far as the network being auto and active with an Icon showing on the taskbar. However when I click on the Windows network Icon SuSe tyies to locate my Computer but then comes back with " failed to reteive share list from server. Apr 1, 2009Since I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?

May 25, 2010I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.
However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.
Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

Sep 29, 2010Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

Sometimes when internet goes down and any mail send then it bounced back immediately saying domain not found. Can u please tell me how i configure to hold all mails in postfix server rather than bounce when internet fails and will pass through when restored the internet around 15-30 minutes?

We're running a server with CentOS 5.4. Every night a logwatch report is send. These mails are rejected by our mailserver because some invalid details. These mails are send to local user root which is redirected to another external mail address with /etc/aliases.
At first the mail was send from root@localhost.localdomain to root@localhost.localdomain. As you can imagine, our mailserver rejected this because the localhost.localdomain parts. So I changed the sendmail config with these options:
