I am trying to configure MPD (music player daemon) to work on my headless ubuntu server. Everything works well, but MPD cannot see the music files stored on my windows XP main computer. These files are stored at smb://LASTNAME/share/music Is there a way to directly mount this drive, so it is accessible at something like /mnt/music, in order that they work with MPD?
View 8 RepliesI have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .
I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:

I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to setup a SSL encrypted WebDAV share on my OpenSUSE 11.4 server that is accessible from the internet. Everything is working fine when using Windows XP or Linux clients, but a connection with Windows 7 is not possible ("the selected folder is not valid").
I already searched for a solution to this problem I tried several setups:
- with and without encryption
- with Basic authentication
- with Digest authentication
- without authentication
I did not have success so far. Is there any solution to this (except not using Windows 7)? Or can anyone confirm that this should be working (and maybe my configuration is messed up)?
Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

So far, I am able to view some Mac computers on the network and see the Windows network too - from Ubuntu. However, I am not able to see the Ubuntu computer on Mac or Windows yet. To get around the limitation of Ubuntu one only allowing synchronization of files in the home folder and not supporting symlinks I am trying to mount my big file store partition in my home folder as well as in the /media/hd folder where it is usually mounted.When I restart Ubuntu however there is a very scary message saying that my hard drive is not working correctly and when I say "cancel" it loads fine but only one mount point is mounted.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a simple way keep two identical folders one on my laptop and one on my desktop up to date with each other so it doesn't matter which one I was last working from, they will both be equally up to date with the exact same copy of each file at the click of a button (or the running of a script). I did have two different scripts that I used to use but I seem to be having trouble with them now, perhaps something is different in 10.10 that causing hiccups.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had folder sharing under Samba working for several past versions of Ubuntu. I recently upgraded to 10.04 and my old shares are still working, but any new folders I attempt to share I cannot get to work, despite attempting multiple workarounds.
The Windows 7 error I get is:"Windows can't find "\MYSERVERshared_folder". The name might be misspelled."
I am networking from Ubuntu to Win 7. On Windows I have C:Users shared. In this directory I see two folders (or users, if you like): "Public" and "userr_" On UBUNTU when I go to Network > SERVER > Users I do not see either of the two folders that I see on Windows. I see a different one named "Default". I can access my optical drive on my windows machine fine via UBUNTU, it is just not behaving properly for this shared folder named "Users"
View 1 Replies View RelatedI configured Samba so that this laptop running Maverick would show up on the network so I could share files between the two. When I view the network on the laptop the windows shares show up, and I can access them; but when I view the network on Windows is when the problems start.
I view the network in Windows and this laptop shows up, but every time I try to open the Public folder (only folder shared) it won't let me in. I get some sort of Windows error message about being unable to access the folder and how I might not have permission to access it, and then at the very bottom it says something like 'file path not found'.
I tried to change the permissions in the properties for my public folder but I every time I tried to change the settings in the access box it would reset it back to blank (-) immediately after I changed it.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. Prior to purchasing this new laptop I was running Karmic on my old laptop and the networking between the two machines worked flawlessly. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help me with this problem.
The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

I have my music shared on my desktop machine, and can access it through the network menu item in the nautilus manager, but I want the files from the share to be mounted on the disk so I can access it through the commandline.
If I right-click the shared folder in Nautilus, it says its location is smb://rob/music
If I do:
mount -t smbfs //rob/music /mnt/music, it tells me that it cant locate rob.
So I try "ping rob" and that doesn't work.
I can't make a hosts entry for rob which happens at this moment to be 192.168.0.8, because my router assigns different IP addresses to various machines at different times, and I cant seem to find a way to make static maps from MAC address to ip address.
So, how come nautilus can see my samba share on the machine "rob", but the mount commands cannot?
I cannot mount my windows share automatically with fstab and have the files be R/W. They are only mounted as read-only.I have tried several dozen commands in the fstab file with many mount points and different users. The share is on a Windows 2000 server, but NOT a domain controller.Thing is, using the Places|Connect To Server|Windows Server menu selection, it works fine. And when I use that, the share shows up on the desktop. However, in some programs I cannot see the share in the open/close dialog boxes. I can however go to /mnt/server to see them if I mount them in fstab. The files just open as "read only" that way however.Have tried... on last line of fstab mount command.....rw option, +777 option, using IP address of server, using server name.
Same result (as fstab) if I do a manual mount command, then a mount -a. Mounts Ok, just as "Read only".

Ubuntu (if you are listening) really needs to make this easier. It truly is basic network stuff that for some reason is rather difficult to do. Read only access is not actual network access and my other option (having to manually connect via the drop-down menu) each time I boot up is a pain.What is different about that "connect to server" option on the menu that makes it work? It'd be great if there was a check box there that said "remember this connection". Then all would work fine.
We have a computer here with stuff on it we all use. If I load up my Windows XP VM and open it through My Network Places it loads up just fine. In Ubuntu Nautilus complains that it cant mount the share. If I do:
sudo mount -t cifs //tech1/e /mnt/tech1
it asks for a password. There is no password.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a home network consisting of a Desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate and a laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. Nautilus won't allow me to open Windows shared folders from the browser by just clicking on the icons. That is to say, clicking on Network in the bookmark pane and opening Workgroup doesn't do anything. Sometimes I get a "can not mount: failed to retrieve share list from server" error, sometimes my Windows box just isn't visible at all. All my shared folders on the laptop are visible and rw accessible from the Windows desktop.
I should add that if I hit ctrl-L in Nautilus and manually enter "smb://<server-name>/share/" in the address bar, it mounts and opens the specified folder just fine. I have some of the folders already manually mounted to various locations in fstab.
I've found the issue with Games for Windows Live, and uninstalled that from the Windows computer. I'm not using firewalls on either computer for now to eliminate that as a possibility. Since the Ubuntu Laptop seems to be the one with the problem, I'll focus on that for now.

also configured the firewall with Firestarter, allow all entries for the HOST.
The problem is that in windows I can not enter to notebook or by network interface or by ip address. and viceversa.There is another option for sharing files, or what I do?
I can see my windows folders in Fedora but cannot access fedora folders from within windows Xp.

I have no problem connecting it manually but when I tried to connect automatically upon booting up the multimedia I have to wait for the wireless to be connected before attempting to mount the NFS file system on the media box.Now I am sure that this can be easily implemented using a script however I do not have much experience with that. I am not sure about the syntax for the loop statement. I know what is required for the mount and other stuff. Is the use of the ping a good idea. It takes about 2 second for the ping to return when fails so after 40 to 60 sec it should stop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing Xubuntu 10.04 to connect to some Windows XP shares by adding lines to fstab. The network shares are not mounted at boot, but can be mounted from the command line, after the OS has booted and everything is up. I am suspecting the network isn't up yet, when fstab is processed. I tried adding the option "_netdev" to the relevant network share lines in fstab, but the shares still don't mount automatically at boot up. I read that this option only works for NFS and I am using CIFS. Can someone confirm that _netdev only works for NFS ?
I've seen solutions involving running a mount script after the OS is fully loaded, or running a cron job to periodically check the status of the share and mount if needed. Good workaround but doesn't address the root cause. Is there any other way (besides the _netdev option) to delay mounting of network shares that appear in fstab until the network interface is up ?
Does anyone have any good articles on mounting a Ubuntu volume as an iSCSI share on a windows box? Originally I was just going to use a SAMBA share but it turns out samba has issues with my lan security. View 2 Replies View RelatedUsually you put external mounts in the /mnt folder, then link there with a symbolic link if you want access from somewhere else. By keeping all of your mounts in /mnt its easier to manage them as your system and ability grow.
You need to make mounts as root. Mounts take the data in the target and put it on top of an existing folder. When you mount something on top of a folder whatever was there becomes invisible until you remove the mount on top of it. If there is a problem with a mount and it does not work, any writes to the mount will go to the folder underneath, and any data you expect to read from there will not exist.
In making a mount you should realize that the char requires an escape char in bash to show up in the final output to the command. The escape char is also . Therefore to show \ in a Windows command, you need to type \\. Also, spaces must be escaped once with .
Howto:
You should substitute your ip or name for 10.10.9.5
Reminders: Make sure your Windows folder is shared read/write if you need to write to it.
You probably want to change permissions on /mnt/WindowsDocuments to 777
Tips:If you want a link from your desktop to your Windows "My Documents" folder you can now do this:
$cd ~/Desktop ln -s /mnt/WindowsDocuments WindowsDocs
This will make a symbolic link to /mnt/Windows, and if you execute: ls -l ~/Desktop you should see the links information in the response
Finally, if you want to keep a local backup of what's on the windows box in a local folder you could do:
The ~ char is shorthand for /home/<uername> and represents your home folder.
The result of the rsync command is to make a copy of WindowsDocs (which points to your mount at /mnt/WindowsDocuments which is linked to your Windows machine shared 'My Documents' folder) and put it into ~/WindowsDocumentsBackup

My question is that I have a handful of servers, Server 1 is a Suse Linux machine and Server 2 is a Windows Server 2003 machine. I can mount and access the files/shares on the Linux machine no problem but when I come to using the Server 2003 shares I encounter problems ... here is a snip of my fstab ...

user1 and pass1 is the username and password of a user (local to the remote machine) and user2 and group2 are taken from the machine performing the mount.
Am I doing it right, is that how I should be mounting a share from a (Domain enabled) Windows Server 2003?
Following instructions that I received from the Fedora 10 Guide, I recently edited my etc/fstab file so that I could auto mount my Windows share. It worked the first time, but when I rebooted, I noticed an error saying that Linux could not not unmount the cifs shares. Eventually it did reboot, but now I cannot mount the share at all from fstab. When I run the command #mount -a and then #mount, my share is shown to be mounted although I cannot access it and there is no link to it on the desktop like there was the first time it mounted. I basically want my Windows share to be permanently mounted with read/write permissions. My Distro is Fedora Core 10 64 bit. How can I resolve this issue?
