I've a desktop with Xubuntu 9.04 (wired) and a notebook with Ubuntu 9.10 (wireless), both with Samba installed. The Xubuntu one is a samba-server for a windows network (other pc at home). I don't know what to do to see the Ubuntu notebook with the server... I'm think that adding some lines at the smb.conf would solve this problem but I really don't know...

40 GB HDD
1TB External USB HDD
The computer will constantly be running in my cupboard 24/7. Using it for movies, videos and pictures. Just a home file server so I can I backup all my digital items. What version of Ubuntu should I be using? Server or Desktop? Right now I'm using Windows XP Professional at the moment but I'd rather use Ubuntu personally.
My grandson is now running on Ubuntu, but I tried an upteem dozen times to get it to install and have Wireless working, and two times the light went from orange to blue, but some later problem caused me to do the install over, and when I did that, I would lose the wireless mode. And every attempt I made with the Network settings under System/Preferences or System/Administration did not help.
Now I wrote here about my long effort getting wireless going in my own L355-S7915 Toshiba notebook, and how I finally beat it without actually knowing what I did that finally got through, but that won't work on this HP G60-630US model. Fact is, HP doesn't neven name the motherboard or the chipset, or the Wireless Adapter involved. I keep searching for more specific language, but nothing turns up.
If anybody has found a way to beat this thing, I sure would like to know about it. One thing I remember doing was using wicd in place of Network Manager at one point, and it really did work better on my machine, but I can't find wicd as something I can install now with the newer versions of Ubuntu. So far I have tried 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 LTS, and 10.10, and my sone is presently making his first shot at Ubuntu using 9.04 64-bit version. Still no wireless. If it shows up in a screen menu, and it doesn't always, it will be grayed out and might show that it is disconnected, and I don't know how to connect it.
Any help would be much appreciated. Again, this is an HP G60-630US laptop I am dealing with here, and stuff I went thru way back then has gotten lost in the midst of my 69 year old collection of memories. I went back through what I wrote then, but it is not a match to what I am dealing with now.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have Samba working properly using the eth0 interface on my notebook computer. More importantly, I can browse the network and see the shares set up in Samba. If I disconnect and go wireless using the wlan0 interface I can no longer browse the shares on Samba via name. I can however browse via IP address of the wlan0 interface. How can I make it so that Samba is accessible by name when I switch between interfaces?

I've just installed F12 64bit on my notebook. Everything works great. Only problem I'm having at the mo is my WLAN is slow at DNS resolution. On wired it works fine. I know it's not my access point as it is part if my router and I've rebooted it a few times. My other wireless notebook (Windows 7, Intel 3945ABG) doesn't have the same issue, and this notebook didn't when on Windows 7. I'm using OpenDNS as my forwarders.When I open a URL in Firefox (3.5.5) it opens the site immediately on wired. On wireless it will sit for 3-4 seconds before opening the site saying looking up .................. Once on the site browsing behaves normally.Anyone else having similar issues?

I can still access Internet through Ethernet using a LAN cable but the network monitor doesn't show list of Wireless networks which my room mate's windows 7 machine easily detects.

My wireless isnt working on my HP 6735s Notebook.Theres no drivers in the driver manager nor does it find my network.The wireless indicator on my laptop also shows my wireless is turned off even when i press the button to turn it on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.4.2 on a M622 eMachines notebook. I have no audio what-so-ever even after installing an ALSA mixer and updating everything. I can control every option as if the sound drivers were functioning fine. I've made sure nothing is muted and I've checked the headphones as well. What's strange is that the microphone input works and I'm able to record with sound recorder (according to the audio in level meter). The only thing I can think of is that the wrong drivers are installed but I'm not sure how about changing them or what to change them to. Here is a copy of my ALSA report:

I have recently installed new Ubuntu 10.04 system on notebook, and would like to have there all "notebook-like" features, like working fn+key shortcuts, and other similar things.
So I would like to know, if there is a way (complete package, or application) which can do this kind of things? I can't find any system built-in features like this.
Edit: Found there is fnfxd for Toshiba notebooks (which is my case), now the problem is where to find toshiba_acpi module, or how to enable it if it's there.
System: T400 notebook, intel and ATI graphics, only intel graphics enabled. 9.10 64-bit, whole disc encryption. New install. My system recently started crashing periodically. At first there was no problem. There is no particular program that causes a crash. I havent edited any configurations. The most recent packages I installed were some data recovery packages and Gkrellm. Is there any way to find the time of installation for each package?

installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook. Currently, I am using IBM Thinkpad X31 with docking that has swappable 2nd HD. The 1st internal HD has WIN XP on it. I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI thought my Super key was not working to dim my notebook screen, thinking that it was a driver problem. However, I also noticed that my Super key no longer works. I read somewhere that in order to fix the Super key, you would have to use Keyboard Preferences and change 'Alt/Win Behavior' so that 'Super is mapped to Win-Keys'. There is no option like this for me to select. Moreover, this will not fix my function key issue and my eyes are beginning to strain from my screen being at max brightness all the time.

Ubuntu 10.04 works very well on my Dell D810.
I just install Ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded the Smartboard install. After I click the program to install it starts thinking then asks for my password. I enter my password it takes it then stops thinking. All other functions work just fine apart from the install. It hasn't started yet. I have a feeling that it would install just fine if I could take of the whole asking for the password nonsense. is there a way to do that.
