Software :: Adding Notebook Features To Ubuntu (10.04)

Feb 21, 2011

I have recently installed new Ubuntu 10.04 system on notebook, and would like to have there all "notebook-like" features, like working fn+key shortcuts, and other similar things.

So I would like to know, if there is a way (complete package, or application) which can do this kind of things? I can't find any system built-in features like this.

Edit: Found there is fnfxd for Toshiba notebooks (which is my case), now the problem is where to find toshiba_acpi module, or how to enable it if it's there.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Customization - Turn Certain Features On Or Off

Mar 20, 2010

I'm currently running 9.10 and I'm wondering if it isn't possible to turn certain features on or off. For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.

I'm looking for a way to remove embedded features from a PDF document. I recently purchased a Kindle DX. When I try to open some of my PDF files on the device, I get a message saying: this pdf cannot be opened due to embedded features not yet supported by kindleI'm looking for a way to remove the use of these features from the document so I can view it on my Kindle. I'm a Ubuntu Linux user. (I tried opening the PDF in Document Viewer and printing it to a PDF file by going to File->Print. This make it so I could open it on the Kindle DX, but the font is messed up and very difficult to read. This won't do.)

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - JGR Partly Broken - Features Don't Work

Feb 9, 2010

JGR still works -sort of. That is R works through JGR, but many of the nice features of JGR don't work. Notably, the object browser and package manager do not work, and the function hinting (pop up window showing arguments accepted by a function) dont work either.> JGR :: package.manager()

Error in JGR :: package.manager : package 'JGR' has no name space and is not on the search path
> object.browser()
Error: could not find function "object.browser"
>

As far as I can tell, this occured on upgrade to 9.10. I've tried using different Java environments, but no real success. I wonder if I should just go for a removal and reinstall of R and JGR?

Ubuntu :: Features Missing In Thunderbird & Evolution

Feb 20, 2010

I am using Thunderbird for quite a long time now.

The problem is that I found that the feature which allows a user to use an audio file for new mail alerts is missing. I am using version 2.0.0.23. Now a popup showing new mails is working but it becomes very tiresome to always look at the monitor screen.

Moving to a new mail client is not an issue for me but this one big feature that Thunderbird has is holding me back.

That feature is the ability to encrypt the locally stored password with a "Master Password".

I used Evolution Mail client for a short time and liked it too but again the "Master Password" feature is missing.

Is there a way to enable sound alerts (new mails) in Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 ?

Does the latest version of evolution includes the "Master Password" feature? (I don't want to do all that configuration without asking.)

Ubuntu :: Photo Management In 10.10 (missing Features)

Oct 26, 2010

Maybe I don't pay enough attention. I just know that whenever I've wanted to resize an image or email it, I've been able to do it pretty quickly. It was usually a two step process of resizing with an editor and then sending from a menu. Today, though, I went into the shiny new Shotwell and there appears to be no way to resize; or email.

OK. Went back into F-Spot. Surely there's an easy way to resize and/or email from there. Nope. Are we missing an easy way to do this or am I missing something? I love Gimp but do I have to use that to resize an image? Seems like overkill. Ostensibly, there should be a one stop process - either from an app or from Nautilus - send image and a quick dialog to ask what size and GO!

Ubuntu Installation :: Any Real New Features To 10.10 That Missing Out On?

Feb 6, 2011

So I am still getting use to Ubuntu as far as when the new OS comes out. I am use to when Windows did a release every 3-5 years. So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.

Debian Multimedia :: New Features In Sid X ?

Jan 14, 2010

I just upgraded my sid install and after shutting down X I don't see any text on the console.

I can still type in commands so at least I can shutdown the computer, by typing in the commands blindly.

I've also noticed that my xserver keybindings have changed again, too

It's not self explainatory howto switch out of an xsession to the console.

I'm not quite sure if anything else has changed with this new set of drivers and I guess only time will tell.

So I'm hoping that the next xserver package updates will bring new features,functionality and foundation.

Ubuntu :: Simple Small Text Editor 3 Features

Mar 7, 2010

I am looking for an editor to fill a specific request for a mostly non-computer person. He uses a computer to write manuals and other books for classes he teaches. He has come to ubuntu so he can more easily access updates, gimp, etc. than he felt he could in Windows.

1) I need a text editor that can be kept open without bogging things down, or can be loaded fast enough to make him think it is "TSR" (made usable in either case by a keypress on his MS internet antique keyboard)

2) Spell check as you type with editable dictionary (he can add words that will no longer show as incorrect). Ability to select spelling suggestions easily (left click a misspelled word is his current method).

3) Ability to highlight words that most of us would call syntax highlighting but for words having NOTHING to do with a programming language etc. I would call it ability to edit the keyword file(s) to make his own languages to be highlighted.

Already rejected:
* anything with millions of complex keys to @#%$^%#$ remember that don't make sense
* gedit
* geany
* kate
* openoffice
* treeline (though he does use it for other things)
* tomboy (the cuss words there are an art form)
* anything emacs/vi or similar (see #1 reject reason at top)
* some gtk-nano clone he has no idea where he found

Ubuntu :: How To Disable The Default X Power Saving Features

Apr 2, 2010

I am using Xubuntu 9.10 on a nettop as a X11 terminal.In order to do that, I created a custom session script that runs some commands instead of starting xfce4-session and the likes from GDM. When I boot this nettop, GDM automatically logs a dummy user in (called "test"), and runs a script that does "xhost +", and opens a small X Terminal to keep the X session alive, while some other computer sets the DISPLAY environment variable to point to <nettop>:0 and runs gnome-session.

My trouble is that after 10 minutes of idle, the screen is blanked(power saving I presume).
I tried to add "xset -dpms" and "setterm -blank 0 -powersave off" to my startup script, in vain. I want my power saving options to be configured on the remote computer, not the nettop. How could I prevent X/GDM/Whoever from blanking the screen ?

Ubuntu Servers :: Web Jukebox Software - Use Nice Web Panel And Useful Features

May 27, 2010

I'm looking for a good jukebox software, by good, I mean, easy to use, nice web panel, and useful features. (Okay, it's a bit vague...I admit it) So I need your help to find the "best" one (I know it would be even better to try every solution, but I'm sure I will not be able to see every features as you might have seen) I've seen so far 3 good projects:

- Ampache
- Jinzora
- and Subsonic

I've tried Ampache and Subsonic thanks to their demo. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a demo of Jinzora. Ampache seems a bit 'old fashon' (The interface is not very clear, not very user friendly, ...) but seems to get good features. inzora, according to the screenshots I've seen, the interface is quite complete. And Subsonic seems to be a really good one (but in Java), a lot of features and a nice interface. I'm not asking you which one do you think is the best, but which one do you prefer and why ? Which useful features, pros and cons, etc.

Debian :: Changing Features Of A Package After Installation?

Sep 7, 2011

I was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.

The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.

Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?

as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 - Cannot Find Power Saving Features

Apr 18, 2010

I am running openSUSE 11.2 x86_64. I am processing work units from Folding@home on this pc. Strange thing is, when I actually leave the pc alone and working on folding@home, my performance actually drops instead of going up as I would expect. I believe there is some kind of powersaving feature I cant find or something else that's hurting quite a bit on the PC. I am talking about maybe 20-30% performance loss. PC in question is: Athlon II 630.

Already deactivated Cool'n'Quiet from the BIOS. Got no fresh ideas on what could cause this weird behaviour.

Update:
Code:
[22:05:52] Completed 260000 out of 500000 steps (52%)
[22:18:28] Completed 265000 out of 500000 steps (53%)
[22:30:41] Completed 270000 out of 500000 steps (54%)
[22:40:20] Completed 275000 out of 500000 steps (55%)
[22:48:16] Completed 280000 out of 500000 steps (56%)

PC was "idle" working on folding and I came back at 54%, see the huge difference? Frames were taking about 13 minutes each when "idle". When I am using the computer, frames are done within 8 minutes.

Networking :: Configure My Firewall (through Iptables) To Allow Apt-get Features

Apr 26, 2010

I am encountering problems to configure my firewall (through iptables) to allow apt-get features, like update and install.I have the latest debian server running in a virtual machine in my windows xp and therefore I have two interfaces in this debian server:- NAT Interfaceinet: 10.0.2.15- Host Only Interfaceinet: 192.168.56.101So far my iptable rules drop all packets for default, in exception icmp and ssh that I allow to ping and connect from my windows xp. Both of them I use only the Host interface (192...) to connect to another 192... interface on my windows.

Those are working fine, but apt is not. I know, in this very moment it shouldn't. But I made a lot of attempts trying to configure the iptables allow connections through the 80 and 21 ports from/to NAT and Host. I think I made all possible combination (or not, because it didnt work). But I'm wondering if someone more experient can help me solve this problem.

Server :: Disabling Apache Mod_proxy Features

Mar 31, 2011

I'm using CentOS 5 and just found out that there are people using my Apache Web Server as proxy (version 2.2.3 the OS's default).

I've checked out that my mod_proxy is already disabled but the unauthorized incoming request is still very large.

So I tried to compile an Apache from raw (2.2.17) just enabling mod_rewrite and then found out that the 'proxy' request is still there.

Tried httpd -l and here are the modules inside the Apache :

Code:
# /opt/apachew/bin/httpd -l
Compiled in modules:
core.c
mod_authn_file.c

[Code]....

There should be no mod_proxy but why should it still accepting proxy request? I checked the access_log file and still found [URL] and so on.

My question is : - How to block all the proxy request and only accepting the normal web server request? I also have tried to enable proxy in the previous Apache and then setting up "ProxyRequest Off" and Proxy * only from localhost but the request is still there.

I tried by myself using the webserver as proxy in browser and all the URLs I opened including the false URL will be redirected to my index.php and this should show me that 'you-can't-use-this-as-proxy-anymore' right?

Insane people still believe they could use my server and they keep trying and trying.

I couldn't block the IP addresses because some of them are using the mobile data (GPRS/UMTS) and that is our market for the website.
