Ubuntu Security :: Configure To Log In With A Password Fingerprint And Usb Token?

Mar 24, 2011

First off is there any way to configure ubuntu to log in with a password, fingerprint and usb token? Secondly what is the difference between the standard home folder encryption and the alternate install encryption?

Thirdly is it possible on new external hard drives that incorporate thumb scanners to install truecrypt on these? Fourthly does anyone here on ubuntu forums use lastpass with the 'yubikey' device-does it work well on ubuntu? And fifthly are ironkey usb keys worth the money or are they a scam?

Security :: Display Of Number Of Failed Logon Attempt At Logon?

Jan 26, 2010

Our system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.

OpenSUSE Install :: Login With Fingerprint With 11.4?

Mar 28, 2011

I have a thinkpad T510i with fingerprint reader. The device is detected by opensuse 11.4. I have enabled the reader in yast, went to the user management, selected my user and started the fingerprint plugin to read my fingerprint. The readers green led is on and it asks me to move my index over the reader. When I do this, it says registering fingerprint done, do it again, Sucessful prints: 1 (the equivalent in german). Ok, I do it again and the message changes to Successful prints: 2 and so on until it says fingerprint was sucessfully registered. And now? This is all i get:

Code:

$ su - joba
Could not locate any suitable fingerprints matched with available hardware.
Passwort:

I cant find fingerprints anywhere on the disk. Where should they be located? What names would the files have?

Ubuntu :: System Behaves Strangely Whenever I Log In Via Fingerprint Reader (AES2501) / What To Do?

Jun 12, 2010

I've recently noticed that whenever I log in via fingerprint reader (AES2501), my system behaves strangely.
For example, the Gnome panels take almost a full minute to appear after everything else has been loaded, and there's no NetworkManager icon in the panel - even though nm-applet (and thus NetworkManager) is running as shown by top; that can be (partially) solved by killing NetworkManager, restarting dbus, and then manually running NetworkManager.
None of that happens when logging in using a password.

Short of not using my fingerprint reader, what can I do?

Fedora Hardware :: Sudo Does Not Work With Fingerprint (SU Still Do)

Jan 20, 2010

Since yesterday my sudo doesn't work with my fingerprintreader anymore. su and GDM still do. sudo just asks me for the password instead of asking for a finger-swipe. AFAIR I changed nothing, but I accidentally forwarded the USB-Port on which the scanner is connected to VMware. I disconnected it, but maybe there could be the problem.

Software :: Fingerprint Scanning Perpetually Broken / Why Is So?

Apr 5, 2010

Why doesn't my laptop's built-in fingerprint scanner work in GNOME? It's fairly common (manufactured by UPEK) and I've tried fprintd and thinkfinger to no avail. The latter seems to be built for USB-attached devices and fails to find any device and the former installs and runs fine, but fails to recognize any fingerprints.

Using either fprintd-enroll or the GNOME "About Me" panel, fprintd will gladly register my fingerprint, but no amount of swiping will get it to actually recognize it afterwards. I try re-installing it every new update, but same results, what's going on?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Authentec AES 2501 Fingerprint Reader Not Working

Feb 21, 2011

I am working on a project that requires fingerprint reader support. So, I installed the libfprint and libfprint-devel packages on my Fedora 14 system, to support my Authentec AES 2501 fingerprint reader. I know that my device is alright because it is working fine on the Windows 7 installed on the same system. In fedora, the fingerprint reader is recognized, when I run the fprintd-enroll command. The prompt to enroll the fingerprint is displayed on terminal. But, it just stands when I swipe my finger. I have tried everything but cannot resolve the issue. The output of usb-devices command shows "Driver=none" under fingerprint sensor usb device. But, I have the libfprint installed.

Debian Configuration :: Wrong Fingerprint When Connecting With SSH After Conn-reset

Jan 6, 2011

I've got a strage problem with openssh-server on debian lenny. I've done setup of sshd and basically everything works fine. I can check the fingerprint of the ssh-keys on the server and it matches with the fingerprint shown on the client for the first connection. so the key is stored in the known-hosts-file on the client.

The problem occurs after a "connection reset by peer" (i guess when the connected client goes to sleep or a timeout occures)!

After such a reset, when I try to connect to the server, the banner "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" appears and the shown fingerprint of the server-key is totally wrong (it differs from the one on the server, BUT it is everytime when this problem occurs the same fingerprint). If I nevertheless remove the correct key from the known-host-file and accept the new key, I still can't login (permission denied).

To fix this situation temporarily I just need to restart the networking on the server. After the network-restart I get (again) the correct fingerprint of the server-key and can login without problems. Until the next connection reset.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Logon To GUI - Gdm ?

May 11, 2011

This all started when I had no sound being detected by my laptop's mic. I also have an external USB sound card and it was not detecting mic sound either. I had previously done recording with Audacity (it could have been back in Ubuntu 8.04).

Now, I had a feeling that I was going to break something trying to get the mic to work. Sure enough, I'm at the point now where I cannot logon to the GUI (gdm).

I made a number of changes before my last reboot.

Here's a summary of what I think is the primary cuase (pulseaudio!):

At one point, I had lost sound altogether (I believe this was a result of having installed pulseaudio Volume control, which someone used to unlock and configure their mic).

So, things were starting to degrade. Being the persistant and stubborn one that I am, I decide to trudge on.

I had read enough suggestions (and desite enough "didn't fix" responses), I decided to try removing pulseuadio altogether. After rebooting, I was not able to log on.

Let me try to describe this logon situation as clearly as possible: When the laptop boots up, it shows the Ubuntu logo with the colored dots below moving from right to left (orange/white).

When I get to the user logon screen, it's not as fancy as it normally is. The logon window which allows me to select the user is a little more basic and the background is a simple black/purple color. The day and time is displayed on the task bar below as well as a power icon with options to suspend, restart and shut down.

This is how the logon screen used to look:[url]

I've been unable to find a screenshot of the current state and I don't think I'll be able to post one due to my technologically limited situation.

When I select my user and enter the password, The screen goes blank (or displays what appears to be the console for CTRL+ALT+F1) and then I'm back at the user selection as described above as if I hadn't even tried to log on.

At this point, I'm not positive which distro I'm using, nor which kernel, but survey says:

My laptop is a Pavilion zd8000.

lspci shows I have: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inv M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]

I'm not sure if this is proper. When I run /etc/init.d/gdm stop, I get: Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service( utility, e.g. service gdm stop.

Probably not, because when I try sudo service gdm stop, it returns: stop: Unkown instance.

OK. Maybe it's OK, because running sudo service gdm start, I returned back to the logon screen. (But, I'll include this because it may indicate something, but I think it may be the way the "service" works now...)

(I do have networking enabled, so I can run apt-get and what not)

I find this interesting. I installed kdm. I started it after stopping gdm (through the service command as noted above). I was able to log on through kdm, but I'm not brought to a desktop, only a black background and a terminal window in the upper-left corner, without any window frames (I can't min/maximize/close). There doesn't appear any way to log out...

I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. I'm getting more interested in a backup/reinstall, but I may not have the ability to do that on hand, so I'd like to try to get things working. At the very least, I'd like to be able to log on and do work. Sound would be nice and a working mic would also be nice, but I can do without either of those two for now.

Most of the solutions I've been able to find in terms of not being able to log on has been a result of:
- Bad usernames/passwords
- Insufficient drive space to allow logon

While I haven't tried creating any new users and logging on with them, I'm confident it wouldn't do any good. df -a shows: /dev/sda1 Available = 6324296. Should be enough for basic operations.

My plan at this point is to start woking on the kdm angle. Since I am able to log on, but only to a terminal window, perhaps I can find some info on why that happens...

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Logon Through GUI

Oct 26, 2010

Hey currently running Lucid x64. After installing tex-common due to there being errors on all app installations (the apps all seemed to work fine though). I am unable to proceed past the GUI logon, the screen just goes black and returns back to the logon screen. I should also note that the PC was setup to automatically login, so it shouldn,t ask me to logon any way.

I had installed many updates earlier that day and also the nvidia graphics driver (before updates), rgba gtk+ module, gnome-color-chooser and upgraded nautilius. All which where working fine at the point before tex-common installation.
