Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Disabled After Fixing Suspend Mode
Jan 9, 2011
After fixing an issue with sleep mode, my WiFi is automatically disabled on my Ubuntu installation on boot while the switch is on. For some reason, it seems that Ubuntu has an issue communicating with my BIOS. As a fix to this problem: I disabled the C4 sleep state. My Ubuntu installation now boots up fine but the LED on the WiFi indicator glows orange, indicating that it's off; while in Windows it glows blue, indicating that it's on.

Using Squeeze, I wanted to get KMS + DRI2 and suspend/hibernate working with my radeon card using the Open source driver (my card: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M IGP (5955) PCIE (RC410) is no longer supported by the ATI/AMD proprietary driver). I know my card has problems with suspend/hibernate in User modesetting and from what I've read [URL] it has been solved for some only using KMS.
I followed this instructions by the Debian maintainer:[URL] Of course in reality the available version in experimental is now 6.12.191, and mesa 7.7 and libdrm-radeon1 are already in testing. Therefore I only had to get xserver-xorg-video-radeon from experimental and switch KMS on. It worked ok , except that when I tried to hibernate, it didn't even go into hibernate mode!...the screen went blank and the wireless led shut off, but the fan was running and the keyboard lights were on...
Aside from that I also got the following disquieting messages:
[drm:rs400_gart_adjust_size] *ERROR* Forcing to 32M GART size (because of ASIC bug ?)
radeon 0000:01:05.0: Wait MC idle timeout before updating MC
Failed to wait MC idle while programming pipes. Bad things might happen.

I have never had a working suspend. But ... every year or so I try it DOH!!! to see if the updates have solved itI used suspend mode today, and when I woke the system up , all seemed fine untill I tried to browse the internet. It told me I was offline. no ammount of clicking "go online" would work. So, then I noticed the network connection was broken.I did a few things to get connected, and I want you all to tell me what I need to put back again ! IPV4 and IPV6, I unclicked the box to require this for connection to complete.Somewhere else, there was a list of servers to ignore. I removed them all. (I think there werre 3) one was localhost another was similar, and the third was a number.I just want to know what these should be set at, because just because it works - doesn't make it right

Im using natty in lenovo b460. After installation was not able to connect to wifi. Ethernet is working alright. So searched for additional drivers and installed the Broadcom 43xx drivers. After restart the network applet says the wireless is disabled by hardware switch, even after it is switched on/off several times.

After I resume from hibernate with my cpu frequency manually set to the highest settings (2ghz) the network manager shows not wifi APs. "wlan0" shows under both ifconfig and iwconfig but "iwlist wlan0 scan" says no results. "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" also says no results. I've tried rmmod then modprobe with no luck. Rebooting is the only way I can get WiFi working.
I can get wifi working again by:
- rebooting
- changing the cpu scaling to a lower setting then hibernate/resume
- changing the cpu scaling to a lower setting then 'sudo rmmod ath9k; sudo modprobe ath9k;'
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Atheros ar5008 (AR5BXB72) using ath9k drives
Code:
$ lspci |grep Atheros
0e:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

$ uname -r

I was using my usb Alfa AWUS036H-v5 usb wifi card, and then after I rebooted, it randomly stopped working.. did some searching on the site, one idea was to do
Code:
sudo lshw -C network
which I did, and it shows my internal wifi card (iwl3945) working fine, but says my wlan7 (Alfa usb) as:
network* Disabled
Also, in the upper right hand corner, the antenna is greyed out and says "Device Not Ready"

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Although it has worked fine for the past couple of weeks, I have recently encountered a problem with my wireless card. It is an Atheros AR928X card on a Toshiba satellite U405D-S2874 model laptop. Recently, I attempted to put the computer into suspend mode for the first time. The computer failed to wake up, and I performed a hard reboot. After this, everything seems to work except for the wireless card. I am now unable to connect to any wireless network with my laptop, and the wireless manager doesn't seem to be working either.

I got my wife to try Linux, so we set her machine up to dual boot with Windows. After a few weeks, she decided not to use Linux, so we deleted the Linux partitions using Gparted on a USB drive and resized the NTFS partition, under the apparently mistaken impression that Grub would detect that there was now no other operating system. When we rebooted, we got error: no such partition, followed by a grub rescue prompt. I've never worked with Grub directly before, so I have no idea what to do at this point.

Basically when I login back from a suspend or after I boot the pc, the wifi takes 30seconds to a minute before it starts to connect. This makes it very annoying to have to wait for no reason.
Basically the issue is caused by the wifi not having a script to search for a network after a suspend.

What I want to do is have two ad hoc servers running. One ad hoc network would host a web page giving stats on all the players and other ad hoc server to host an online multi player game. This way my clan can practice in any enviroment and setting (i.e parking lot outside at a park, motel rooms) without messing with a wired network. When someone connects to my laptop through wifi ad hoc mode, how can I automatically direct them to my web page? I've search this question high and low on alot of forums and google, but could not find anything relevant. maybe I'm just not asking the question right.I'm not sure, but I also might want to port forward tcp:28960 or UDP: 28960, 20500, 20510. Which is better for call of duty 4 Modern Warfare 2?

having problems with wireless on my old Asus A2500H laptop, NetworkManager applet keeps the "enable wireless" greyed out and gives a "Wireless is disabled" for each wirelss network card. The wireless cards in this laptop are:
Code:
00:0c.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4303 802.11b Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
It does look like the network interface come up fine as well:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
[Code]....
Of course the easy solution would be to just flick that hardware switch on, however there isn't any hardware button only a indicator light, which is off unfortunately.
Any clues to get wifi up? Also tried another pcmcia card but same problem, card is recognized but still "Wireless is disabled".

After returning from suspend to disk, RF devices (wlan and bluetooth) are disabled. Running lspci indicates that no wireless network device is available, and no drivers are loaded. Furthermore, the LED on the front of the laptop remains off - this is always on when RF devices are available. There is an Fn-F1 function key to toggle wireless, but this does not function to either enable or disable.
Rebooting the system does not re-enable the RF devices, and there is no option in the BIOS. The only workaround I have at present is to boot into windows vista and use the Fn-F1 function key. This pops up a small hotkey utility with the option to disable/enable the wi-fi and bluetooth (independently). Upon confirming the dialog, the RF device light immediately illuminates. Rebooting into fedora and wireless devices are working once again.
I am running kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64, with the latest compat-wireless drivers. I can provide much more debug information (dmidecode, acpidump, boot logs, lspci etc...), I am just unable to determine what is relevant

Hard blocked: no

I have an Asus EEEpc 1000H netbook with both Ubuntu and WinXp. I just updated from Ubuntu 9.1 to 10.04 and I can no longer connect to my home WiFi!
I have a Netgear router and the network is WPA-PSK password protected. All other devices can perfectly connect. The netbook can under WinXp and could with Ubuntu 9.1. Now, with the 10.04, it keeps asking for the password but never connects. Obviously I triple checked the password and there's no chance of a mistype error.

I got two issues with my wifi usb adapter:
1) it cannot see any networks around
2) i cannot setup it in master mode to use my PC as a router
As far as i can see, the device is recognized and the correct driver (rt73usb) is loaded. I was able to connect to a laptop somehow (the laptop could see other networks and the adapter's PC-to-PC network). I'd like to make it work as a router, i.e. share my internet connection (eth0) via wlan0. Here is what i have:

Is there a way to check what caused Ubuntu to wake from suspend mode?
Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop.
Have tried disabling all BIOS wake events (and WOL).
Have ensured mouse doesn't move.
Need a way to know what caused it to wake. Happens 90% of the time, usually 3 seconds after it suspends.

Disclaimer: I have very little linux desktop experience...I've only used command line stuff for work in my previous life. I am joyfully coming off of a long addiction to MS but am having a bit of a hard time adjusting.
ISSUE: I can't seem to figure out how to turn off suspend mode. I have turned every setting I could find in the power management to "do nothing" and I have turned off all of my power mgmt options in the system bios. A "friend" suggested I remove HAL...which caused me to lose my secondary internal HD and all of my usb devices...and the issue persisted. Every 20 minutes of no action the screen blanks and my monitor goes into standby mode which is making watching movies in bed a less than relaxing experience.
Some background that may or may not be useful: I installed kubunutu 10.04 (2.6.32-28-generic) from cd on a fresh HD. Initially I had issues with the wireless network and alsa/pulse sound. I worked through those through much trial and error but the suspend issue persists. I've uninstalled and re-installed lots of packages I probably shouldn't have been messing with and would really like to avoid a reinstall as this seems to be the final fix I need to get things running the way I want them.

I tested this problem also on ubuntu 9.04 and situation is the same.Is there any way how to force suspend mode without "looking" on this device? Do you need any log file to trace reason of this problem ?

Is anyone else having trouble with waking up from suspend mode? After bringing the computer (Dell Studio 1555) back from suspend mode, GNOME moves very slowly. Cursor is unresponsive for significant amounts of time - any open windows do not respond to selection... Effects don't usually go away until a reboot is performed. This evening, one such restart resulted in a crash, where the shutdown process locked at the attempt to shut down the mouse/pointer module..

I decided to wing it and upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 once I developed odd wireless issues (grrr) where I could only get on wireless if I booted up Ubuntu with my wifi switch DISABLED and then right away enabled it once I was logged in. The funny part is, it distinctly said 10.10 available in update manager. I get it done, power up, System - About Ubuntu - 11.04.
