Ubuntu Networking :: WG511 Wireless Card Not Available As Network Device
Feb 22, 2011
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Laptop. It has a Netgear WG511 (made in China) PCI wireless card but I cannot see any connections other than the wired one. Entering in lspci in the terminal mode and removing/replacing the WG511 shows (I think) that something is being detected in the PCI slot "Network Controller: Intersil Corporation ISL 3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] rev 01". Is this the WG511 and, if so, how do I get it to be detected as a network device?

I have got a netgear wireless PC Card WG511 made in Taiwan (not china). I have intalled it in windows w/acouple of ver. Settling on v1. I am first generation pc. maybe toold for Linux? I can't even figure out how to post in the Dam Small Linux website. But have read most of the posts in linux questions. I can't install a wireless card ;<( this is an old laptop and would be like usable if I get the *&^%$ wireless working. In fact, does anyone have a wireless card working with Dam Small Linux? I have the book but, it's not been much help. Other that telling me to add nodhcp in the boot startup. That didn't help either. I have learned alot through this misery of the wireless nic.

Edit: after upgrading everything using a usb to ethernet port converter ndiswrapper is working perfectly
I do not have internet access on a laptop I am trying to upgrade. It has no ethernet port. I may resort to buying a USB to ethernet adapter but I spent more than I would like to have already. I have tried every command in the HOWTO for wireless difficulties and posted the output.

my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

I have installed Linux SuSE 10.3 on a PC (Lenovo Thinkstation A58). However, when I start the computer I get the following error message:
"No valid Host_ID or host-name found."
I then use YaST to set up the network. I get the following error message:
"Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device is not present."
The computer has Windows 7 installed and everything seems to work fine. The LED on the Ethernetplug is blinking when using Windows, but not when using Linux. I guess this means that there is no driver for the Ethernet card (Marvell Yukon 88E8057). I have not found any driver for the card and am considering buying a new one. Which PCI card works with SuSE Linux 10.3?

I have been working on this for a while now and am absolutely stumped. Basically, what i am attempting to do is make my ubuntu box into a gateway for my network. I have everything working thru hard wire, but I simply cant get the wireless to work. No matter what I do, I cannot get my wireless card to transmit an essid and allow nodes to connect. I have tried assigning it in the interfaces file (shown below), and I have also tried manually modifying it using the iwconfig command. Here is the topology:
eth1: internet WAN
eth2: ethernet out to LAN
ra0: wireless out to LAN
Here is a copy of my /etc/network/interfaces file:

auto lo

I have an nc8000 that gives a "104 unsupported wireless network device detected" error when I plug in my Intel wifi card that I acquired recently. Based on reading, this is a common HP problem due to non-native HP hardware. If I insert the Intel Pro card after the HP boot screen, 10.04 loads just fine and Ubuntu detects the card.

I have a wired connection on the motherboard and a also a card for wireless communication.Wired connection works fine but my plan is now to setup wireless connection too.I was advised to use this in order to find installed network devices: sudo lshw -C network. Not sure, but I think it only reports details about the wired device. Is that correct? How could I get ubuntu to also find my wifi-card?

I want my Ubuntu desktop to have a static ip-address, i have altered the interfaces file to the below and also filled the info regarding my wireless network card but still every time I reboot the desktop gets the ip 10.42.43.1, HOW is that possible???
I use a apple time capsule router, I want my desktop to run a apache server thats why I need the static ip. I also want the static ip to be set on the wireless network interface. I have an old laptop with an internal Intel pro 2200 card so there should not be a driver problem.
This i my interfaces config code...
To be on the sure side to get this to work I have configured my router(DHCP) to give my wireless-HWaddress the ip of 10.0.1.15, STILL the ubuntu desktop starts with the false address above.

So I want to run a Minecraft Server on my computer running Ubuntu 11.04. My goal is to have the server running over my network through one of the virtual terminals without any type of GUI running (to conserve resources). I'm shutting down the ubuntu GUI using the command:
Code: sudo service gdm stop which does a great job, but it also kills my wireless connection.I've tried editing my /etc/network/interfaces, and even uninstalling the gnome network mananger, but nothing seems to work. Can anybody help?

I know that most people are using F12 and F13 but I just installed F10 on one of my machines. The Kernel is 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 and the GUI is Gnome 2.24.1.I have a Trendnet wireless card already installed in the machine from when it ran XP which is in the tew-421pc/tew-423pi family. Is there a device manager/hardware installer that I can use to set up the wireless card or does anyone know of a driver install program for this card?

The card is recognized by Ubuntu 9.10 and I have it in the network manager. I followed one tutorial about creating an ad-hoc network and all looked good, until I actually wanted to connect (or to be more precise, my machine is a host for other computers). The wireless icon just loops endlessly, without connecting and eventually I get "Wireless network - disconnected" message.
So, the main issue here is - connecting! I just can't. Also if you know/have some good tutorial for ad-hoc,
Code:
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"internat3"

I'm trying to activate a wireless network on an ubuntu server 10.04. The machine has a TPLink PCI wireless card. Card is well recognized, and scanning for wireless connection it finds correctly the essid of the access point in the room. But when I try:
Code:
$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "apoint" key s:my_key_8
this error is returned:
Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.I looked for similar situations over many forums, and I found that it could be the card doesn't support the encryption type (My AP uses WPA with TKIP). However if I use an ubuntu desktop live CD on the same machine, I can connect witouth any problem with NetworkManager 0.8.

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

My wireless device is an integrated Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, I am unsure about the driver I have in use. I am sure I have a driver installed because the configuration screen shows my network. I currently have the computer plugged into my network via CAT 5 but I would like to be able to use the wireless (obviously.) I am using Open SuSE version 11.2 and I have run the updater. I could not see my wireless network before running the updater and I can now so I know that the updates have helped but I am again stuck. I have tried to search the wireless forum and I have tried to tinker with the settings in YaST , but nothing seems to be working. Reading the Welcome page of the wireless forum, I tried the Broadcom chip-set advice:
[Code]...
I have read and taken to heart the advice given for receiving help and if any more is needed I will gladly give it. I have a small amount of experience with SuSE Enterprise edition so I can understand some technical stuff but I am best at following specific instructions.

I have a Netgear WG511GE PCMCIA card, and a driver from the original installation disk. I used an ndiswrapper-utils gui called ndisgtk to install the driver. I then do the following to verify an installation:
[Code]....
Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:
[Code]....
Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).

I have downloaded and installed Fedora 10.Now I am setting up the network and in the 'network configuration' it finds the wireless device (ralink) in the 'hardware' section of the configuration - I set this to eth0 (it originally set itself to wan0 and I still had the same problems, now it doesn't give me the option to put it back to wan0).Now I goto the devices tab and try to set up the device with eth0 - which it seems to find. But when I goto activate the device it tells me that eth0 cannot be found

I just installed Lucid Lynx on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. The problem I'm having is that my wired network card has died on me prior to installation. I'm having the hardest time finding the required files to make my Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card work without being able to download any packages from the web. If anyone knows which files I need and which order I should use to install them that would be great.

I used the following guides to try and get my Netgear WG511 PCMCIA card going:
[URL]
I also made a post about it here: [URL]. As the problem doesn't appear to be ndiswrapper itself I've made this separate post.
Unfortunately, I still end up having wlan0 attempting to connect, prompting for my password, trying to connect then prompting for my password (ad infinitum).
I changed my network security from WPA to WEP and now my card works fine. why this might be happening (i.e. why WEP works but WPA doesn't?)
