I am running ubuntu server x64 as a router. I currently have 2 LAN cards, eth0 and eth1. and I want to add wireless capabilites to the machine.I was wondering if any of you know which card I could use?I want it to be supported in ubuntu server and it must be n-draft, as it is to replace a Edimax n-draft router.
View 1 RepliesI'm having trouble getting my network set up the way that I want it/had it. You see, when I first set up my network, I just had my cable modem going directly to my standard wired router (A D-Link DI-604), which had DHCP,and was connected to all of the computers on my network. I had one switch hooked up to one of the ports of the router, but this was a regular switch, and it would not try to assign IP addresses, it would just pass through the DHCP info as I wanted.
Now however, my network setup has changed. My room mate and I both got laptops, and we decided that we wanted to have wireless access so we didn't have to constantly plug in to the router.
Now my network is set up like this: The modem is hooked up to the router(DI-604), which is hooked up on the LAN side to our computers, our switch (which is hooked up to 3 more computers), and to a wireless router card (A Gigabyte GN-BC01).
The wireless router card has two jacks for ethernet. One for WAN, and one for LAN. The LAN side we have plugged only into the computer in which the card is installed.
Now the problem is this: The wireless router card comes with DHCP by default, and it's assigning addresses to the laptops and to the computer hat it's in, and worse, the IP addresses are on a different subnet than that of the main dlink router. The Main (dlink) router assigns addresses from 192.168.0.1 (itself) to 192.168.0.254, while the wireless router card assigns addresses from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 (itself).
Because of this, I cannot access services on the wireless network from my wired network or vice versa. The first thing I tried was setting the card to assign addresses from 192.168.0.12 to 192.168.0.253, however it just said "internal error" when I tried to do this. I decided that this may be because it sees that it was being assigned an address on it's WAN side on the same subnet. So the next thing I tried was disabling DHCP and setting the "LAN IP Address" to 192.168.0.12, hoping that the DHCP would just go through the card, like a switch. I would have set the LAN IP address to be assigned by DHCP, but this was not an option, so I decided that'd be the best thing to set it to.
Once again however, setting the LAN ip address to an address on the same subnet as that of the IP assigned to it's WAN side caused it to report an "internal error". I verified that this was the issue by setting the LAN address to several other private IP addresses to test (I.E. 10.0.0.1, 192.168.3.1, 192.168.5.12).
My question then really is: How do I set up both routers so that I can access services and computers from each network from the other network. Should I set them with different subnets and set the gateway on the wireless network to the main router? To the wireless router card? Should I put them on the same subnet? Will it know how to communicate?

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

Those are my authentication capabilities, obviously. I am using a WEP encryption for my wireless router and according to this, it will not allow me to connect. Is there anyway to allow that? The wireless card works just fine in Windows, even on the same network encryption type. Using a Intel Wireless/Pro 4965 ag. Note* this is my mother's router and whatnot. She won't change it the encryption type.
I installed a Tenda W322P wireless card in my dual-boot PC running both Windows XP and Ubuntu 11.04. The card worked straight out of the box on XP, but does not function correctly under Ubuntu. My apologies for any missing/irrelevant information, I am having to post this from the Windows boot so the Ubuntu settings are not directly available at the same time as internet access.I followed the process detailed here htURL...to install and configure the driver (I believe from reading other sites that this card is the Ralink RT3062 chipset), blacklisted the original RT2860 driver that was in use (couldn't even get the card to scan for wireless networks with the default driver) and restarted the interface.
Since then, sudo iwlist scan can find my wireless router but when I attempt to connect to it, it seems to enter a loop of requesting the WEP key then pausing for a while before re-requesting the key. I know I have the key value correct because it is copied and pasted from the same text file I used to copy and paste into the passkey field on the Windows boot. Attempting to connect to the router using Ubuntu also has the rather unfortunate side-effect of crashing the wireless router, killing off all other device connections until the router has been reset.
I have a Belkin Wireless G F5D7230-4. I was attempting to configure a wireless card on another computer on my network when it froze during the reboot phase after making settings adjustments. The wired connection is fine, except on that computer that I was making the adjustments from. It won't connect at all. I plugged a friends netbook into the same wired line and it connected. Also there is no wireless signal on any laptops. Mac, Win Linux, don't matter. I tried all the various methods of resetting to default but still when I try to access the router's config page @ http://192.168.2.1 I get the error Code: The server at 192.168.2.1 is taking too long to respond.

View 1 Replies View RelatedTo start off I have a Rosewill rnx-n2x wireless adapter and a Dlink 4500 router. The problem is, the wireless network manager detects every wireless router in the neighborhood, except mine. I see this persons, and this persons, but no "My router Not yours". I even tried doing the hidden network setup and still nothing.
I have read that the rnx n2x isnt supported by linux, although I've seen solutions to make it work (which didn't work, mkdir command kept getting denied during make) link to what I'm talking about: [URL]. What I don't get though, is that if the rnx n2x isnt supported by linux, wouldn't I not be getting my neighbors connections to begin with?
The problem with my wireless network. I have Dell DV6 Pavilion 2115 eg laptop and i installed Ubuntu 11.4 and internet and wireless worked, until i reboted my system it has disapear. That system has two ethernet interfaces: one to the DSL modem and the other to the internal switch. Future plans were for adding a second "internal" interface with the idea of moving servers into that (think DMZ). But while I was planning for that, the missus has decided she wants to pick up a Windows laptop and would like to be able to use it wirelessly at home. I have access to a (free!) Netgear WGR614L and was hoping it would work. Unfortunately, I'm unsure how to add the wireless capability to our network.
Questions:
Is it best -- or even possible -- to use one the wireless router for this?
Is it possible to merely hang the Netgear router off the internal switch and set it up for the wireless users? Or...
Would I need to add another ethernet interface to the firewall and hang the router off that? The address of this new interface would act as the default route for the wireless users. Then I'd need to (I assume) add more rules to the iptables configuration to deal with the new network. (I sort of like this option -- it it's actually feasible -- as I can easily shut down any wireless access by logging into the firewall and stopping the interface connecting the wireless router.)
I've taken a look at the setup guide on the CD that came with the router and it assumes that you have a modem connecting your PC to the internet. The instructions have you placing the wireless router between the modem and that PC. For our network, that would have the wireless access coming into the "dirty" side of the firewall. (Not what I would like.)
my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.
I changed the network setting and caused a problem of wireless network. After I completely reinstall the OS of Fedora 13, the wireless network is still incorrect for connection to router.

He bought a NETGEAR N300 wireless router which has a 192,.168.3.X network and he attempted to add it to his 10.10.10.X network and all is fine. He laptops and such can get to the internet fine. The issue is he cannot get to any of his devices on his 10.X network. I have looked at his comcast router which is controlling his 10.X network to see if I can add addition routing to his 192.X network. but didnt see anything. I also am not to familiar with the N300 wireless router. I was going to have the wireless DHCP turned off and some get it to pull the DHCP stuff from the comcast side but dont see any area to do this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having a network problem that I've been able to temporarily solve by rebooting the router, but even that can be shaky at times, and it can sometimes disturb others' internet activites, so I'd really like to tackle this while I can. I had an old thread about this, but it's ancient history by now, and plus which, I've got a bit more Linux experience and patience than I did before.
The basic problem is that NetworkManager will associate and connect to my home wireless network, but a) it won't let me ping the router or anywhere else ("Destination Host Unreachable"), and b) the connection lasts for maybe a couple minutes at most. If I reset the router, however, 9 times out of 10 it will associate and connect successfully and I can get online, but I have to run a constant ping to the router with a 10-second interval, otherwise it drops the connection, unless I'm doing a lot of other heavy network activity.

The last prompt line is included because I cancelled it myself; it didn't abort on its own. If left unmonitored, it basically keeps doing this over and over, with no visible network activity at all.
With NetworkManager, I can keep selecting the network's ESSID over and over, and it seems to reconnect, but I still can't ping out anywhere. I'm using a Netgear WN111v1 wireless adapter with ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers. I have no idea what the chipset is, and I doubt that Linux drivers exist for it, even if I knew what it was. The router is using WPA2 security (hence my trying wpa_supplicant)

I only include this for format checking purposes. The commented out "psk" is the actual text passphrase, while the uncommented one is (presumably) a hex representation of the same key. Is this correct? I've never done this with wpa_supplicant before, I've only used NetworkManager (which is a pain in the @$$ because it requires X to run, and so it disconnects any time I log out/back in ).
Is there any hope of getting my wireless connection permanently working, so that I don't have to reset the router every time I need to reboot or log out/back in?

Yes I have tried manual configuration, and double checking the password, ssid, protocols, and security type.
WPA2 personal is the security type.
There are maybe 4 different ways I know how to connect. The most annoying thing is when this box pops up saying to type in a password for the network connection.. and keeps popping up even when everything is right.

I had thought I heard that if you had a second wireless router, you could use it somehow to detect the wireless router you have already set up in your home (like using a wireless card)? I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Laptop. It has a Netgear WG511 (made in China) PCI wireless card but I cannot see any connections other than the wired one. Entering in lspci in the terminal mode and removing/replacing the WG511 shows (I think) that something is being detected in the PCI slot "Network Controller: Intersil Corporation ISL 3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] rev 01". Is this the WG511 and, if so, how do I get it to be detected as a network device?

The Kernel is 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 and the GUI is Gnome 2.24.1.I have a Trendnet wireless card already installed in the machine from when it ran XP which is in the tew-421pc/tew-423pi family. Is there a device manager/hardware installer that I can use to set up the wireless card or does anyone know of a driver install program for this card?

I followed one tutorial about creating an ad-hoc network and all looked good, until I actually wanted to connect (or to be more precise, my machine is a host for other computers). The wireless icon just loops endlessly, without connecting and eventually I get "Wireless network - disconnected" message.
So, the main issue here is - connecting! I just can't. Also if you know/have some good tutorial for ad-hoc,

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.
I want to try to get wireless access to the wifi router with the xbox360 wireless network adapter.Is this possible?
