I added a repo from launchpad to install latest Network Manager and then installed it (version 0.8). Then I decided to rollback to Karmic's version (since 0.8 doesn't work) but failed: I removed the repo from sources.list
Then apt-get udpate
Then apt-get clean
Then apt-get install network-manager...
But still 0.8 version is downloaded and installed! How can I restore Karmic's version?
I have a pppoe adsl connection. When I disconnect and try to reconnect, network-manager keeps asking for my password. I type it again and again with no success. When I reboot, it works again. On ubuntu, I use pppoeconf and it works well. So on Fedora I made a connection with pppoe-setup but neither ifup nor

I installed 9.10 Karmic 32 bit on a laptop here that has an Atheros 2413 card in it. I could see the network and tried to connect. After 30 seconds of attempting to connect, it simply says disconnected.
Thinking network manager was to blame, I installed WICD and rebooted. I tried to connect to my network, but it came back with unable to get IP address. Okay, fine. So I check my iBook and Ubuntu work laptop both are connected fine. I tried other drivers within the WICD preferences wext, ndiswrapper, madwifi nothing worked. I power cycled the router thinking something might have been borked with my wireless but it's fine.
I lost my network manager applet after removing kde-desktop. restore it, as I dont find it in add to panel applications I dont have any clue, also how could I add bluetooth applet in notification area.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had network manager running on my netbook karma install, but when I installed VNC as another display, logged into that other display and accidentally clicked on not to run network manager on startup cause there is already one running, it screwed up the network manager auto startup on my normal netbook display.I tried adding it back into auto start in settings but that has not worked.As always, thanks for any help you can give me getting this to auto start again on login, without deleting my kde cache(cos it is setup the way I want it).

I have a DSL modem with four ports and a built-in wireless router downstairs. It works great: I have wired Ethernet for my PCs downstairs (all plugged in directly to the DSL modem); my son has great wireless access upstairs (using the built-in wireless in his laptop). PROBLEM: I want to add another, desktop, PC upstairs. I've been trying to use wireless, with a plug-in a Linksys USB stick. It doesn't work worth crap.
I'm considering a) getting another phone jack upstairs, and moving my DSL modem there, or b) stringing some CAT-5 cable from the modem downstairs to the PC upstairs. Putting a wireless PCI card in my upstairs desktop PC might also solve the problem, but the PC only has one PCI slot, and I'd rather keep it free, if at all possible.
QUESTION: Is there any kind of "wireless repeater", where I can a) get wireless access from my DSL modem/wireless base station downstairs, and b) give me some spare Ethernet ports, so I can plug in desktop PC (so the PC can have a wired Ethernet connection)? POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I have an old Linksys WRT54G router that I'm not using. Q: Is there any way to configure it for this purpose? I have run Fedora 9 and 10 on my Dell Inspiron 640m for about 6 months now and generally experience very few issues with it. Specifically I've been running Fedora 10 KDE 64bit since it was launched. Up until I had to reload it a couple of weeks ago my Vodafone Huawei E172 3G dongle worked perfectly with Network Manager. Since the reload the dongle is detected by the OS (lsusb lists it correctly, etc) but nothing I do will make it appear in Network Manager.
I've tried manually configuring a GSM connection then plugging it in, but no joy. I've also tried using it in my Acer Aspire One which runs Fedora 10 XFCE and it work, but when I try it in another Dell Laptop running Fedora 10 KDE 64 bit it doesn't. I'm assuming that a recent update must have caused some issue as it has definitely worked in both Dell laptops in the past. As mentioned I've reloaded recently but the other laptop hasn't been.
I'm unsure where to go from here. I haven't been able to get Vodafone's beta drivers working under F10 (although I did under F9) and can't find any posts on this issue. The version of Network Manager that I'm running is NetworkManager-0.7.0-1.git20090102.fc10.src.rpm, which was released shortly before I reloaded. Chances are I just didn't try my dongle between the update coming out and the reload, so didn't notice the problem before hand.
I have installed WvDial (apparently) but it has no icon or launcher to start it by default, how do i get it to run? I also need basic set up how to. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) and network manager doesn't seem to be able to use my modem to connect to the internet (set up wizard works, appears connected, but then I get page not found error). Hence I wish to use WvDial to try to connect instead.

I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected
View 1 Replies View Relatedim just getting the hang of ubuntu 9.10, and then all of a sudden 10.04 comes over and screws everything up with the upgrade. i did the upgrade, and now the network manager wont show up in notification areas. any clue as to why? help is greatly appreciated. also, my machine does register that the drivers for wireless card is installed, and when i run lshw -c net command with sudo priveleges, it says it can detect networks, so im confused as hell.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have the following problem: There are three NFS mounts in /etc/fstab, which are automatically mounted. The network connection runs over NetworkManager. Since NWM brings up the network asynchronously, NFS doesn't mount correctly on the first try, but is loaded soon enough since mount automatically retries until it works.
I can live with the fact that I have an error in my boot messages, since everything is up in time for the user. But, I need a (selfmade) upstart script which depends on the NFS mount being up. Even using "remote-filesystems" as the trigger doesn't help, because the trigger is apparently sent after the first failed try (I checked with cat /proc/mounts in my script, the nfs mounts are clearly not up.) Can I somehow force the remote mounts to wait until NWM is up, or make the NFS mount emit an event when the mounts really get mounted?
Network manager doesn't recognize nas0 interface and i have problems with using Gwibber, Evolution mail,Empathy, etc Is there any way to add nas0 in Network manager?? I know the solution to remove Network manager, but i need Network manager because i'm often using wireless (as second internet connection).

I have downloaded and checkedsum several images, including Mint 10 ( sort of Ubuntu ), I have used UNiversal USB, LinuxLiveUSB creator,Unetbootin and the native program inside Ubuntu. All the time I have the same problem : "line 7: can't open /dev/sr0 no medium found" I have disabled by default the floppy disc from BIOS. I suspect that some line has to be modified. I am not an advanced user of Linux. But I would like to have ubuntu booting from a stick flash drive.

I just installed x64 Fedora, and as the title says, NM fails to detect my WiFi card. It's an Encore ENLWI-N with a RaLink RT2800 chipset. The card does show up when I run lspci, although iwconfig yields nothing.Not sure if this helps, but when Ias running Karmic Koala, Ubuntu detected the card immediately and required no configuration

i've installed it on my parents old computer, mostly for downloading. But wired internet did work all the time but then i had to reset our router because of some problems and now it doesn't work anymore! But the strange thing is, if i put the cable on my own laptop with windows on it, then it works as normal.
So i guess its some kind of DNS problem, but i'm very new with ubuntu and also not so good with computers. Our network is simple just an modem connected to an router: Sitecome WL-341.
I installed Ubuntu10.04, It cannot driver Wired network and wireless. Later I installed linuxMint9, wireless is ok, but wired network doesn't work. I am sure the lan cable is ok. It works in Windows.
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhat is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.

Here's what I want to do: Copy the whole Ubuntu 10.04 partition/installation from my old laptop to the new one.
What I tried: Used Simple backup to back up my Ubuntu installation to a USB hard drive. It yields a 10.4 gig folder containing 7 files. Installed 10.04 on the new laptop, used Synaptic to install Simple Backup, plugged in USB drive, started Simple Backup Restore, tagged the backup directory in Simple Backup Restore, and get the error:
Error: no backups found in the target directory.
I also tried copying the backup to the local drive, same difference.
I just got a new T400 and installed Ubuntu. Everything is fine and I'm really impressed by this OS. But seems my wireless network is very unstable. Sometimes it just can't connect.

However, I discovered recently that currently only eth0 works, and eth1 is dead, but I don't know why. It's been a while since I've tried eth1, so I have no idea when exactly it broke. I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that the MAC address is incorrect: it is set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, which seems wrong. But I have no idea how this happened...Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix it? Here is some output which I think is useful:

I recently migrated my system to Karmic 9.10 from Hardy 8.04 Now that I want to convert some .avi videos to H.264 in Kino for upload, it doesn't work. In Hardy all was fine, I'd import the .avi files and export to h.264 mp4, then upload to ..... etc ... no problems. But with karmic; after I import the file into Kino, I then trim out the bits I don't want. Next I go to Export and select H.264 MP4 Single Pass (ffmpeg), then click the Export button; it 'locks the audio' and that's it - takes 5 seconds to 'finish' no matter how long the video clip is, and no mp4 file is generated or appears in the selected folder (same result with H.264 MP4 Dual Pass).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to figure out how to run/install openSUSE from a usb stick for several days. I downloaded the 11.4 .iso from distrowatch & used the following command in Linux Mint to put it on the usb stick.

It gets to the loading screen and get stuck. It has a small bar going across, that never finishes. I've hit escape to try and get some info, but don't know what I'm looking for and it's too much to write down. I did notice there were several I/O errors. I did check the usb for defects and it returned ok, and the md5sum was correct.
I've also tried safe settings which takes me to a blueish/black screen and stays there. No ACPI starts to load and then drops to a shell.
how to get this accomplished? I've installed many Linux OS's and I've never had this much trouble.
ps. I"ve read the "please read" pre installation page on here, and things just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.
