Ubuntu Networking :: Atheros 2413. 9.10 Karmic WICD And Network Manager?

Mar 27, 2010

I installed 9.10 Karmic 32 bit on a laptop here that has an Atheros 2413 card in it. I could see the network and tried to connect. After 30 seconds of attempting to connect, it simply says disconnected.

Thinking network manager was to blame, I installed WICD and rebooted. I tried to connect to my network, but it came back with unable to get IP address. Okay, fine. So I check my iBook and Ubuntu work laptop both are connected fine. I tried other drivers within the WICD preferences wext, ndiswrapper, madwifi nothing worked. I power cycled the router thinking something might have been borked with my wireless but it's fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network-manager And Wicd Can See But Not Connect To Network

Jul 10, 2010

I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".

I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.

I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

Ubuntu Networking :: WICD Will Not Connect Without Network-manager?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm trying to use wicd instead of network manager because I want a "no fuss" way to use wireless on wmii. However, wicd will not find any networks unless network-manager has been run and has connected to a network since startup. If it hasn't connected to a wireless network, the wicd will find no networks, and iwlist won't provide a list of networks either.

This seems to mean that network-manager is doing something to the interface when it connects that needs to be done to make it usable, but I'm not sure what it is or how exactly to find out. I do know that the interface (eth2) will not appear in ifconfig if network manager hasn't connected, which I assume means that it hasn't been brought up. ifconfig eth2 up makes it show up, but I still can't connect with wicd. What can I do?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, generic 2.6.32-22 kernel, MacBook 5,5 using the Broadcom STA driver. (more details below)

Code:
*-network

Debian :: WICD Network Manager Does Not Detect Any Network / Resolve This?

Jan 16, 2011

I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.

Ubuntu :: Change To The WICD Network Manager?

Jan 9, 2011

how to switch to it because i keep getting my connection dropped with the default network manager. he said to make sure i was plugged in via ethernet, purge network manager - then apt-get WICD. the problem is, not even ethernet works once network manager is purged.

so - before i try this i wanna know, can i just download WICD before hand, then purge network manager, then install WICD. OR, can i just install WICD now, then once i purge network manger it will move over to WICD as the default?

how should i go about changing to WICD?

it has to be a driver thing, its happened on multiple installs - on network manager and on WICD

it usually happens (or at least more often) when im streaming a live feed from a website, and it doesnt reset itself unless i turn the computer OFF (not restart) and back on

basically what happens is, with both the network manager and WICD - the wireless just cuts out and stops detecting any network at all, disconnected. i have tried terminating the process and restarting the applications via terminal or run command; i dont know what to do it just keeps happening. sometimes it wont happen for 2 days, sometimes it happens five times in one day.

it really seems to be affected by what im doing on, sometimes i'll have multiple videos going and it starts to chug, and i know when its gonna happen - wifi cuts out. it doesnt DROP, it just stops working, detecting networks.

like i said, even restarting doesnt fix this. i have to quit the application, turn the computer on and off - then boom its right back on when it comes back.

so strangeeee.

so far i've had 3 ubuntu problems in the week i've had it.

1. this

2. "couldnt update .ICEauthority" at login

3. and this made me have to reinstall yesterday - nothing i would install would run anymore, no errors, no processes - i just click the icons and nothing happens.

I uninstalled network manager and installed WICD and have the same problem. It will connect to the access point when it is configured with WPA, but not WEP which we need to use for the other computer. In the status bar of WICD it looks like it is trying to configure the encryption as WPA no matter what I select. I've looked in the config files for WICD and can't see anything that would do it.

The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. Ubuntu Networking :: No Driver Claimed In Ndiswrapper - Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter?

Feb 26, 2010

I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. "ndiswrapper won't work until it thinks that your Windows drivers have been properly installed and that they are the appropriate ones for your wireless card. You can run the command: ndiswrapper -l"

result:

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.
net5211 : driver installed
device (168C:0013) present (alternate driver: ath5k)

So I've posted the result the name of my wireless card below: lspci -nn

Result:

00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN333/CN400/PM880 Host Bridge [1106:0259]
00:00.1 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN333/CN400/PM880 Host Bridge [1106:1259]

[code]...

It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.

Slackware :: Remove Net Manager And Use Wicd Only To Resolve Disconnection

Jun 12, 2010

I replaced the trusty old aironet wireless card with a trendnet scanbus wireless card so I could secure my home wireless with wpa encryption. It uses the ath5k module, and the wireless is set up with wicd. The issue is that if I stop browsing for about 2 minutes, the next time I start to browse, it will disconnect, then reconnect no problem. I don't know if this is supposed to be a feature, but it is sure annoying. Is there a tweak somewhere to stop this? The other option would be to use ndiswrapper and use windows drivers, but I'd rather explore tweaking, if possible. If I have to use ndiswrapper, would I have to rmmod ath5k first, or would it be ok to use ndiswrapper directly?

So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Stopped Recognizing Wireless Network

Jan 24, 2011

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...

Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.

P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?
