May 4, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10 32bit. I removed the network icon from my panel & I would like it back now. How can I icon back? I use the icon for my wifi networks.

Ubuntu :: How To Restore Network Manager
Jul 5, 2010my network manager disappeared earlier on today after i clicked on hibernate which would not restore so i turned everything off and restarted and NO network manager went systems/preferences/network connections and no good no internet had to do a clean install after 4 attempts my question is:
if it ever happened again how can one restore network manager and the all-important internet connection

Ubuntu :: Network Manager Icon Disappeared
Jul 25, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32 bit version alongside my Windows OS.I wanted to enable my DHCP configuration in my modem.So I did what was to be done from Windows and when I switched to Linux, I found DHCP enabled connection not working in Linux and also the network manager icon had vanished from the systray.I have now switched off DHCP and wanted to revert back to my original settings but still no network manager icon is there.

Jul 15, 2010I have had a bit of experience with previous distros but I am pretty much a newbie. So I setup 10.04 but I can't get my net to connect. It's working fine on Win7 (posting from it). It's a dsl connection. I use an ethernet wire to connect to the net.
I opened terminal and used the 'sudo pppoeconf' command and followed the instructions. This is how I used to get my net working on previous distros but it dosen't seem to work in 10.04. The terminal says that my connection is active but it isn't. The network manager icon isn't visible on the top panel.

Oct 21, 2010After a recent dist-upgrade I have lost my network.There is no Network manager icon in the top corner.My switch and the RJ45 port on the PC are both lit green and connected. There is an internet connection from the other PC on the LAN.I am now able to ping the other PC on the LAN but still no internet!My router is at 192.168.0.1 so I have also tried:sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.1.

Im using "alt+f2" the nm-applet to get the NM work but removes after reboot, so i have to do this all time.. uhm, when trying to enable desktop effects is sats "searching for available drivers" and then "Desktop effects could not be enabled". When trying to install apps from Software center, neither of the apps installs, the button install just keep refreshing, but if i go terminal: sudo software-center im able to install everything.

Dec 4, 2010Just installed (clean install) of Ubuntu 10.10 on an old desktop pc. The network manager icon is missing, Buy the way i had to run install from safemode. As I was having problems with login in, I kept trying to login in to the normal desktop but Ubuntu kept thinking about it for approximetly ten seconds and then asking me to login in again repeatedly. however when i switch to guest user on the guest desktop the network manager icon appears. I have used this icon to enter a mobile broadband account and to connect up to and down load all updates surf etc.Read a number posts and find this problem with the network manager icon are quite common. After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.

May 24, 2011I have been using ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the last 5 months, used tata photon plus for networking. Everything went fine when couple of days ago, after doing normal updates as listed by the update manager, sound went off.. to solve this, I had to remove and reinstall certain packages as listed in [URL] ...+documentation, I had to restart, after restarting, the sound problem was gone but the network manager icon went off, the modem was not getting power from the computer though the LAN wire was connected. To add to dismay, the mobile broadband connections that I had added to the network manager were gone. I tried adding the tata photon plus (huwaein) again but could not be added, reinstalled usb-mode switch data and related packages, but still the computer does not detect the photon as usb device. I have broadband dsl connection and tata photon plus too but cant use any of them.

I'm assuming this can be done easily enough as Linux Mint LXDE has got it, or Network Manager at least. i need NM to easily start my Mobile Broadband dongle's connection.Also, can touchpad tapping be turned off in LXDE, and how? I have it set up to have no tapping in regular Ubuntu but this is undone when I boot LXDE.

Feb 26, 2010I added a repo from launchpad to install latest Network Manager and then installed it (version 0.8). Then I decided to rollback to Karmic's version (since 0.8 doesn't work) but failed: I removed the repo from sources.list
Then apt-get udpate
Then apt-get clean
Then apt-get install network-manager...
But still 0.8 version is downloaded and installed! How can I restore Karmic's version?

Feb 10, 2010I deleted all APs in my Wireless Section of network manager. After that, the whole network manager icon disappeared. I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected

May 11, 2010My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

Jun 1, 2010Ok So i installed edubuntu yesterday, and it was working flawlessly. Now suddenly the "Network Connections" icon in the top panel, to the left of clock and at the side of volume controller is missing. I don't know how to connect to my DSL Broadband internet!I'm using the "sudo pppoeconf" command temporarily to connect to internet. I've BSNL broadband internet connection, I live in India. Please help me how to bring back the networkconnection icon, so that i may connect net again. Like in the above picture, there are "2 oppositely pointing arrows" showing the network connection icon, to the side of volume controller. How to bring it back? It suddenly disappeared on itselfI googled a bit and found that some people told to press alt+f2 and type some command (which i forgot and am not able toremember, sorry!). But that didn't work, although it worked for the person who had the same problem as mine.

May 8, 2010language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-kde-en, language-pack-kde-en-base, libsoup2.4-1, libsoup-gnome2.4-1, pm-utils today on my laptop. Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.
So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.
Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.

Jun 22, 2011I recently installed fedora 15 on my computer but I have a huge problem. I can connect to my router wirelessly for a couple of minutes only. Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.

Jul 10, 2010Because Remastersys has a size limit for its backups, I exclude the Pictures folder. Therefore, when I do a restore, there is no pictures folder; when I create one, it gets the generic folder icon, rather than the folder icon that is normally associated with the Pictures folder. I know that through properties I can replace the folder icon with anything, but I have not been able to find where the generic pictures folder icon is stored. If I choose a specific icon, and change the icon theme, the custom icon remains. Further, when I make a bookmark for the new Pictures folder, it gets the generic folder icon, no matter what icon is assigned to the Pictures folder. There must be a way to restore the generic Pictures folder icon, so that it changes with the icon theme.

May 4, 2010I have just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid and have an issue with the login screen. It defaulted to show the edubuntu logo. this is probably because I tested the edubuntu packages on my system and it thought it was a edubuntu system.
I went into /usr/share/pixmaps/splash and replaced the edubuntu-splash.png file with the Ubuntu logo png (i renamed the file).
Unfortunately this did not work and now I have a login screen with a "no image" icon.

Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.
