but i have no idea how to edit it properly let alone, And this assumes your wireless NIC is already supported and visible as wlan0. Could someone help me or perhaps walk me through the process to correctly set it up so i don't have to bridge my connection from my laptop please?

Will it be a major challenge writing a Linux driver ?
Where should i start ?
NB. I want to write my own driver for the following reasons:
Get a better understanding of Linux Device drivers. Probably, get a better understanding of C/C++ and Linux in general.

Nov 18, 2010I should preface this by saying I'm pretty much new to ubuntu. I was a nerd back when I used windows, so I'm fairly knowledgeable about it, but I lost interest right before switching to linux, so I haven't learned much past basic navigation.
I bought a WPN311 wireless card for my homebuilt machine a while back and still can't seem to get it to work. One person told me that after upgrading to Lucid it should work out of the box but that's not the case. It seems my computer doesn't even recognize that the card is plugged in. When I open the drop-down menu to choose which network connection to use, any sort of wireless option doesn't even show up.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750

Feb 12, 2011I'm having trouble installing my wireless card drivers. I've read a lot on this using Ndiswrapper to install my drivers but when I go to install I get this.

I'm giving the right path to the inf file tried moving to other folders and still nothing.
Ubuntu :: Logging Into Netgear Router Setup After Passphrase Change?
Jun 29, 2010I changed the passphrase in my Netgear WNR3500 router. I got the teenager's win7 netbook back online (wireless) no prob by simply changing the security key in windoze and it didn't effect my connectivity but when I attempt to enter my router setup by entering my local IP nothing happens, no response at all. I've rebooted twice and my connection is still very solid but I cannot access the router setup. The ONLY change I made was in the router's "passphrase".Not a big emergency at this point I suppose but I need to know what I need to change in Linux? Or to rephrase, in windoze7 passphrase=security key. In Linux?I can just reset the silly thing I guess but was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to and besides I anticipate the same trouble when setting the passphrase afterward.

Apr 30, 2010I would like to setup a qmail server for learning purposes (if you strongly feel Postfix is better, feel free to let me know). When I started setting up qmail (using Life with qmail), it suggested that having a DNS is the best approach. In the spirit of learning, I decided then to create another server for DNS only, and use that for qmail.
My problem is that, as this is a home installation, the internet is behind a Netgear DG834Gv5 router, on a DSL line that has a dynamic IP address. I am using DynDNS, but also don't mind having to update any DNS entries to keep up with the change, this is not exactly a production-grade setup.
In addition, I also have access to another DNS server where I can create authoritive entries for any domain I register. I have done that for a domain, and would like to point part of that to my home DNS so that I can learn.
So essentially, I would like to have a new zone for home.mydomain.org on my home DNS so that I can create new entries for *.home.mydomain.org such as qmail.home.mydomain.org etc. there.
I assume that this would include port forwarding on the router which is not a problem, but I truly have no clue where to start. I have a very basic install of Cent-OS 5.3 (no X and just Base a few admin and dev tools) and just installed the latest RPM of bind (9.3.x).
Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Locate Printer Drivers In Network Printer Setup?
Oct 19, 2010I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

Nov 4, 2010I have managed to connect to the above NAS using the supplied RAIDar software from my base unit. The unit is duel boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP. Both operating systems work with the NAS both by wireless and wired using RAIDar and any other relevant programme
However my laptop, running Ubuntu, will not find it using Raidar, the IP address in a browser nor with a file manager or any other programme. I have tried both wired and wireless connections
However if I go to "places" from the top bar, which opens Nautilus, I can access it and all the files on it.

Which one of the above is the realtek and which one is the NETGEAR? This is my first post, and I don't know if this is too much info to place in a message. Also if anyone responds with help, could you please comment with an explanation of any commands, I am new to Linux, but I am real happy and impressed and really don't wish to be a Windoean anymore, I wish to become a full fledged Linuxean.

Feb 1, 2010i need help getting 64 bit ubuntu 9.04 or mint 7 to recognise my rangemax/netgear wn311t wifi adapter.the drivers work out of the box in 64 bit Vista, and will work fine in 32 bit 9.0/mint 7 via ndis wrapper.when i use the drivers from the netgear website in 64 bit 9.04/mint7 i get an error " invalid driver." I searched the net for a 64 bit driver and found driver that recongnises the card in 64bit 9.04/mint 7 but when i go into terminal the result shows that that the card is "unclaimed" (it also says unmanaged i think)

Mar 5, 2010i can't get my wg111t netgear wireless adapter to work. I followed the help thing by installing ndisgtk, which installed successfully. I was able to load up the file on the cd that also the help page said. The problem is that the computer won't load up the adapter as it would load up my cd's and flash drive. Here's how i installed ndisgtk. I installed the files ndiswrapper_common, ndiswrapper_1.9, and then the ndisgtk_0.8.5.All of these were for i386.

Jun 25, 2010I'll plug in my Netgear wireless USB adapter, and it'll recognize it right away. I'll type in my WEP key, and then it will say configuring. It will then bring up a "Secrets for [router]", with a ASCII key, and I'll check the pass phrase I entered, which is the correct WEP key. I then hit okay, and it says "setting up network address", and then brings up the Secrets page over again.
This particular wireless card works fine on Ubuntu, and worked fine on Zenix, but for some reason, won't work with Kubuntu.

Jul 4, 2010I have managed to setup ndiswrapper and am able to see my wireless network but cannot connect to it.
I am using NDISWRAPPER and a Netgear WNDA3100 driver (I think this is Atheros-based) to connect through a Netgear WN111 USB Wireless dongle to my existing wireless network. I am running 9.04 on a Fujitstu-Siemens laptop.
I am aware that the WNDA 3100 driver is not the intended driver for my WN111 dongle, but it is the only driver that showed "hardware present" when loaded. All others (I tried perhaps 5 or 6) showed driver installed but no info about hardware.
When I try to connect to the network it tries for a while, occasionally prompting me for the passphrase, and then eventually stops.
I would like some help figuring out what else I need to do. I feel I am nearly at the solution. My guesses are as follows (for what they're worth):
1. Could it be something to do with the WPA security?
2. Could it be something to do with this, output from dmesg?

Jul 9, 2010Okay I've got a Netgear N-150 WNA 1100 USB WiFi adapter, it doesn't work in Ubuntu it's not supported. There should be a way to make it work with ndiswrapper. I tried and failed before and due to other non related circumstances I had to reinstall Ubuntu. What are the steps to install ndiswrapper and it's dependency's on a fresh Ubuntu installation that cannot connect to the internet.

Nov 30, 2010Just installed yesterday - and I love it so far except my wireless turns on for about 5 minutes, then disconnects.
In order to get internet back I have to either restart or uncheck "Enable Networking" and then recheck it.
I will try to provide as much information, but like I said I am new to Ubuntu and there is some things that are completely different from what I'm used to on Windows:
