Ubuntu Servers :: Usb Netgear WG111 V3 Plugged Into Computer?

so i have most recent ubuntu server installed (10.04 i believe) and currently i have a usb netgear WG111 v3 plugged into my computer server. However it does not supply internet. I was told to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and put in

but i have no idea how to edit it properly let alone, And this assumes your wireless NIC is already supported and visible as wlan0. Could someone help me or perhaps walk me through the process to correctly set it up so i don't have to bridge my connection from my laptop please?
i am running on suse 11.3 on a laptop i missing the wireless under network it said not connected i done everything that is writte n i have acer aspire 5742 intel core i3 370m
I have been trying to install my Netgear WG111v2 Driver on my Ubuntu 9.4 computer but everything I have tried has failed. I have looked online and found instruction but it did not work.
I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.
So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.
The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.
However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).
My computer runs Karmic and has quit booting when it is plugged in. I was told it was the AMP needing updated. How do I do that? I do the updates from the update manager, does this mean I missed the AMP update or is it done differently than through the update manager.
I have two shares in total and there are also two external hard drives. The server is used by two different organisations that are not supposed to have access to the data of the other one(at least not as normal users).he script I need should run in the background of the server and when a drive is plugged in, it should check, which organization the drive belongs to, and depending on who the drive belongs to, backup the respective share.When the drive belong to neither, it should just do nothing.Unfortunately, I have no clue about scripting and so this makes writing a script like that, at least for me, impossible.So I wanted to know if somebody could name some good websites for learning to write such a script or give tips.
when my headphones are plugged into my computer, the sound comes from both the speakers AND the headphones. I just want the sound from the headphones if they are plugged in.
I have a Razer headset plugged in. Everytime I restart the computer I have to unplug/plug the headset to make it work. It even shows up the system:

It does not show up as a valid sound device in system -> preferences -> sound.how I can make the headset "active" without replugging it to the computer?

I want to install Ubuntu Server on my server, but I can't move my monitor. What I have tried to do:
1. Install Ubuntu Server onto Computer A. 2. Move Computer A's hard disk into Computer B. 3. Boot Computer B without a monitor. 4. Use SSH to get a remote terminal. This is where my problem is.
Is this possible? I told the installer to install the OpenSSH Server, so it should work, right?
how do you measure performance on a computer?I know there are benchmark sites, they do give a general guidance in selection. However, I want to learn how to build a cluster from commodity parts and want to make sure it is equivalent to a specific server in performance.I know clustering is a bit abstract and it will be difficult to measure direct performance and compare it to one specific board. I am fine with that
FTP from and from my home computers to 2 remote servers has become really slow over the past month. One of the remote servers I manage and the other one is taken care of by a hosting company, so I am thinking the problem is residing on my end. It doesn't matter if I am downloading 1 file or 10 files, they are all coming in at 9 kb/s which is really slow cause I have a 7 megabit connection. I've tried using multiple computers and still have the same problem. I am using proftp for the ftp server and filezilla for the client.
Is it possible to use ssh to launch a program and it's gui on a remote computer? I've tried connecting with ssh -X computer@ipaddress but when I launch gedit it loads on the local computer
been trying to get a spare computer up and running with 10.10 server 64bit no dice so far, after hours of memchecks, disk checksums, re-burns and whatnot..install stops at 73% and does f. all.. tail log shows that it stops at updating sources, alt+f2 and ps aux shows apt-get update process running. if I kill this process, I can continue with the installation, but for this I need to repeat same process - killing all the apt instances that show up - so that it can complete the install. Unacceptable imho. computer is a AMD cpu based, athlon 2 435 on an ASUS M4A89TD PRO mainboard. ddr3 4gb crucial ram sticks. drives are functional S-ATA. No external GPU, so using IGP.
Tried installing without eth-cable plugged in, with it plugged in, with a usb install (that sorry excuse for an install was even worse, "please insert cd" midway) I know I can get the install going with desktop version.. But why would I want an xserver running on a headless computer. Kind of pissed atm, spent so many hours at this, figuring it just might be a faulty HW item. It isn't. using 10.10 desktop on my laptop and production pc - and been using 8.04 as main server, until now...
Edit: another one of them optiarc sony nec **** for brains dvd/cd-rom/writer it seems. add a check for this in future releases, with big bold letters "YOU ARE SCREWED, BUY NEW HARDWARE" printed as soon as the cd loads in these drives.. I've got better things to spend my time on than staring at a screen trying to figure out why it won't load properly
I need to back up a Windows computer to a Ubuntu server across the internet. It needs to be secure as I'm transferring business data. I have been searching high and low and am only coming up with sporadic, half solutions.
I am running ubuntu 10.04, and I have one website up and running 1 website.from my local server, from my local computer on the same network I can type in the ip address of my server and I do get the default webserver is running page, however when I try to connect to my domain, it cannot find it. I have run a ping, and it reached it just fine.
I need a tool that will enable me to manage files and other operations from another computer, access to my server. VPS and other host they usually provide cpanel and other webadmin app to do that.
I need advices on the followings:
1. FTP, allow me to access to my folder, like a web host 2. Access to config the server settings 3. Probably a GUI similar to cpanel
I'm having trouble with Webmin. I got it up and running. However, I was changing the 'listen on port' to something other than port# 10000. I made sure ufw was open to the tcp requests on my new webmin port only. UDP has been disabled. I type in my browser my ip address with the new port, and I get 'problem loading page' now. How can I see the tcp port webmin is set from a terminal on the host computer? Do I goto a webmin folder and change a .conf file?
Is there any computer management software like Cafe123 for Windows? Some friends of mine tried to reduce the cost for setting up computers by making one of the counter/server using Linux, instead of using Windows. And another reason that he want to avoid the counter server from being infected by malware such as those malware spread using usb drive. EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention that, the server intended to use will be powered with Ubuntu, and the client computers will using Windows XP instead.
I want to try and set up a old cheap computer with ubuntu and run it as a home server to toy around with. how to get started? (Where to get an old computer? Craigslist? What specs should I be looking out for? Wireless vs. ethernet? What software to use? ssh?)
I run Debian on my old computer to use it as a server. Everything is configured properly so that it functions as a web server. Now that summer comes closer I will not be home most of the time and I was thinking to use part of my server to upload/download files. Is there some nice package that provides an easy interface for such a task? I am reffering to something like the wikimedia package but for just downloading/uploading files.
I currently have my server setup with a web page and ssh. I am looking to find a way to access the internet from my work computer, but all proxies that I can find have been blacklisted...I can however access my home server webpage. Is it possible to create my own proxy so I can surf from my work laptop?
I recently moved my ubuntu 9.10 server over to a new case with more memory, and when I did the webserver worked like a charm, but now apt-get is broken. Checked my 70-persistent-net.rules and saw the new NIC was there, so I edited my interfaces to use eth1 for the new NIC, but apt is still not working, failing to fetch everything. here is my 70-persistent-net.rules
This may sound stupid but I've got to ask. Can I connect multiple computers running Ubuntu & run software from one computer from the other? I know how to connect using SSH & to copy files back & forth but I don't know how or if I can share programs.
I have recently rented a server which is running Ubuntu linux. I can connect to it through ssh. I've written a Java application that I would like to run on the server 24/7. How do I transfer the files from my computer to the server so I can run the program from the server?
